对一些"创业"术语的澄清7月1日
由于目前国内的创业研究刚刚起步，而国外则已经有了大量的研究成果，但在创业领域的核心概念的翻译和理解上仍然存在着模糊，必须在提出研究问题之前，把创业研究领域西方学者所应用的“entrepreneur”与“founder”、“entrepreneurship”与“business venturing”、“emerging firm”、“start up”与“business venture”等关键词进行区分，以使得研究文献的整理思路变得清晰，也使得其他人能够同样准确无误的理解和重复研究过程。否则英文文献中大量相近相关的关键词与大量国内翻译的和理解的相近相关的关键词相互混同，会对理论和实证研究带来极大的困难。（1）“entrepreneur”与“founder”最关键的核心词语是“entrepreneur”与“founder”。通常entrepreneur在英文的含义中被理解为“在新建企业的过程中承担风险，进行运作和组织的人”。另外一个含义是“在已经成型的企业中负责经营和决策的领导人”。前者的含义是企业的创办者，后者的含义是那些在现有企业中具有创业心态和创业行为的领袖型人物（林强，2001）。但是，当这个“entrepreneur”翻译成中文的“企业家”一词时，在含义上发生了微妙的改变，带有明显的褒赞意味。因为在中国的语言背景下，“企业家”其实是一种身份，带有积极、肯定和尊敬的色彩，但在英文背景下，entrepreneur是一个中性词。李新春（2006）指出：“把entrepreneur理解为中国式‘企业家’最大的不足是赋予其良好的商业形象，掩盖了其捕捉商业机会的本质，假想其为一个具有高度觉悟的经济行为个体，放松了对其某利行为的法治和舆论监督。”其实，国内的许多学者开始把entrepreneur理解并翻译为“创业者”。这样就使得以上在翻译过程中产生的褒赞的含义变成了中性的含义了。而且更为重要的是，“创业者”也更趋向于英文中的第一种解释，那就是“在新建企业的过程中承担风险，进行运作和组织的人”，但同时也包含了大企业领导者的概念。此外，在英文研究中，与“entrepreneur”相近的还有“founder”这一说法，意思是“开创者”。虽然在英文顶尖的学术期刊中这个词很少出现，（注释： 根据Nelson（2003）的统计，在年段里，founder一词在Strategic Management Journal, Academy of Management Review, Academy of Management Journal, Administrative Science Quarterly和Entrepreneurship: Theory and Practice中仅出现了五次，而在另外一个权威的流行的商业文章检索Wilson Business Periodicals Index（WBPI）中却出现了4400次。）但在商业杂志中“开创者”这个词被经常用到，可见，在学术研究领域，这个概念仍然没有引起足够的重视（Nelson, 2003）。Nelson 指出，“开创者”作为企业的初创人，是企业组织结构的构建者和企业战略的制定与实施者。这个定义可以清楚的表明“founder”（开创者）更趋向于说明“entrepreneur”（创业者）的第一种含义，也就是新建企业的组织和运营者。总之，“entrepreneur”应该与中文的“创业者”含义相对应，而“创业者”又可以区分为“开创者”和“企业家”两层概念。前者是与英文的“founder”相对应，后者则与中国语境下的“已经成型的或成功的企业中负责经营和决策的领导人”的含义相对应。这也就说明，虽然创业者多数都是白手起家，但创业也可以在已建立的企业内部进行，还可能是在企业发生生存危机时出现。因此，狭义来说，创业者是指“开创者”，广义来说，创业者是包括以上所述的三种情况。（2）“entrepreneurship”与“business venturing”容易产生混乱的还有“entrepreneurship”一词。在英文里的解释是“新建企业的过程中承担风险，进行运作和组织的活动”，因此核心的解释词汇是“活动”。而在中国的语境下，最开始把“entrepreneurship”翻译成了“企业家精神”，但如果这样，那么研究的侧重点就是“精神”，与经济行为和过程的本义相去甚远。其实，在英文中“entrepreneurial spirit”表示企业家精神，更准确的说是创业精神（李新春，2006）。可见，“entrepreneurship”的正确翻译应该是“创业”或者“创业活动”，而“entrepreneurial”则应该翻译成“创业的”或者“创业活动的”。“venture”在英文词典里的解释是“在具有不确定结果的情况下承担风险的行为”，或者是“具有不确定收入的一个企业”，“venturing”则是指“在承担风险情况下所进行的活动”。因此“business venture”是指“企业”，而“business venturing”是指“企业创业的活动”,这与“entrepreneurship”（创业活动）的含义是相同的。（3）“emerging firm”、“start up”与“business venture”在英文文献中也存在着对大量“新创企业”的说法。“emerging firm”是新出现的企业，重点说明的是企业初创的这个时间段。“start up”则是“开始创立的企业”，主要是指某个事业的开启，通常是在某个大型企业的内部，也可以是指某个新出现的企业。“business venture”则是指“承担风险的新创企业”，强调企业创立的风险承担性。因此，这几个概念在翻译的过程中都可以译为“新创企业”，但只是各自强调的内在含义上有微妙的不同。但这对理论理解和文献整理与分类的影响不会很大。
