Bill Clinton has let slip that his family are on baby watch after saying that
he expected to become a grandparent by the end of the month.
The former president gave a substantial clue to his only child Chelsea's due
date when he told CNN: "I hope by the first of October, I'll be a
grandfather.
"I can't wait. We're on watch now," he went on.
Chelsea Clinton, 34, announced she was pregnant in April. She and Marc
Mezvinsky, 36, an investment banker, celebrated their fourth wedding
anniversary last month.
President Clinton also disclosed that the couple had opted not to discover the
sex of the baby before the birth, and said he did not mind whether they had
a boy or a girl.
"I don't know," he said. "My daughter and son-in-law decided not to know. They
want to be surprised."
The birth of the first Clinton grandchild could prove a political as well as a
personal landmark.
Hillary Clinton, the former Secretary and State and Bill Clinton's first lady,
has said that she would not take a decision on whether to launch her own
presidential campaign until after the baby's birth.
Last week, Mrs Clinton told a women's event she was also on baby watch.
"Now I've been thinking a lot about family because you know I'm on 'grandbaby
watch' and I think a lot about this new member of our family and what he or
she can look forward to," she said.
"And I am well aware that we will do everything possible to prepare this
child, to protect this child.
"But I want that for everybody's child and everybody's grandchild. I want
every one of our children to feel that they are inheriting the best of
America, that they have the chance to do what I believed was possible for me
and what my husband believed was possible for him and what we instilled in
our daughter that really this country is on your side."
