The Lawn on D
The Massachusetts Convention Center Authority, Boston, MA
The Massachusetts Convention Center Authority (MCCA), in partnership with a Sasaki-led design team (including HR&A Advisors), conceived of the Lawn on D&a flexible, vibrant, and temporary urban space&to be an early arrival on D Street, setting the tone for civic impact and expressing the ambitions of a new district. This new district, anchored by the Boston Convention and Exhibition Center (BCEC), occupies a critical mid-point between South Boston, the Innovation District and Liberty Wharf, and the Fort Point and Channel Center neighborhoods. This new district aspires to be interactive, flexible, technologically advanced, inspired by art and events, and inclusive of many constituents (residents, workers, conventioneers, tourists). The Lawn on D demonstrates and pilots these ambitions, testing spatial configurations and programming that will eventually be deployed to a future event space that will become the heart and focus of the new district along D Street.
The Lawn on D is conceived as a platform for innovation and an armature for infinite programming&packing multiple agendas and possibilities into 2.7 acres with skillful design and strong vision. It was designed for cost-effective implementation, flexibility, and ease of transformation.
Composed of two parts&the plaza and the lawn&The Lawn on D is a hub of activity for community events. The plaza's paths blaze trails from D Street to the side entrance of the BCEC, its signature lights describe a right-sized space for gatherings, and its bright, playful, movable furniture invites visitors to make the space their own. The lawn at The Lawn on D&sited where four feet of urban fill used to block views and preclude access&now provides a gracious forecourt to the BCEC along D Street and hosts a range of shorter-term art installations and projects.
The Lawn on D grew out of a larger urban design and planning collaboration with the MCCA. The MCCA is planning a major expansion of the BCEC, which will require additional hotel rooms, parking garages, supporting retail, and, critically, a vision and identity for D Street. Sasaki and Utile, Inc. led the urban design team that laid out a long-term vision for D Street, created design guidelines for short-term projects along D Street, and engaged the surrounding community.

Prawn on the Lawn in Islington is a fully licensed fishmonger and restaurant situated near to Islington’s buzzing Upper Street. Established in 2013 by Rick Toogood and his wife Katie, it began life as a seafood bar and fishmonger but has now been extended to include a 16 seater basement restaurant, serving only the freshest seafood and tapas-style fish dishes. With only an A1 cold-food licence, Prawn on the Lawn serves creative plates including scallop ceviche, seared tuna and our signature Prawn on the Lawn dish, as well as larger platters such as Fruits De Mer, sourced directly from day boats and fish markets in Devon and Cornwall. We make every effort to be as seasonal and sustainable as possible.
In May 2015 Katie and Rick decided to move to Cornwall to set up a second restaurant, Prawn On the Lawn Padstow leaving POTL Islington in the capable hands of their dedicated team.. Opened in July 2015, it follows a similar format to the restaurant in Islington being a fully licensed fishmonger and seafood bar with the addition of a hot food license. This has allowed Rick to experiment with different dishes, making the most of the local produce of Lobsters and Crabs and cooking them on the charcoal grill that he got installed into the kitchen. Still a small operation with only 24 covers, the menu changes every day and aims to be as sustainable as possible, working with local suppliers in Padstow and the surrounding areas.

We take bookings for lunch and dinner, just give us a ring to reserve.
Please note we aren’t your standard starter, main course, dessert restaurant. Our menu is designed for sharing and dishes come out when they are ready. This means that if you choose individual dishes they may not arrive at the same time. Share, it’s more fun as you get to try more things! You can always order more if you like it

We are proud to support the National Lobster Hatchery in Padstow and add a discretionary ?1 donation to every restaurant bill to raise funds. We get most of our shellfish from Padstow so it’s our way of giving something back to the sea.
