Two new Frank Zappa titles, Frank Zappa for President and The Crux of the Biscuit, will be released on CD July 15 by Zappa Records/UMe. Both releases feature previously unreleased material from the Zappa Vault.
Frank Zappa for President? You betcha! We know at various times he wanted to run for office. In the spirit of the dramatic 2016 presidential election adventures comes a release that gives us a glimpse into what could have been. This album is comprised of unreleased compositions realized on the Synclavier, along with other relevant tracks mined from the Vault, with a political thread tying it all together. Don't forget to register and vote!
The Crux of the Biscuit was created in conjunction with the 40th anniversary of Frank Zappa's 1974 album Apostrophe('). As part of Zappa Records' ongoing Frank Zappa Project/Object Audio Documentary Series, it contains rare alternate mixes, live performances, and studio session outtakes. This release celebrates Zappa's iconic, Gold-certified album, which landed in the Top 10 of the Billboard 200 albums chart.
OUT NOW! "Road Tapes, Venue #3" features two complete shows from Tyrone Guthrie Theater in Minneapolis, MN. The July '70 Mothers line-up featured Flo & Eddie, George Duke, Ian Underwood, Aynsley Dunbar & Jeff Simmons. FZ's vast Vault does not contain many full shows from this time period, so that alone makes this release a special one. The tapes were recorded to stereo reel-to-reel, but not without problems. Due to their historical relevance, we felt it was worth it, warts 'n all! Venue #3 does not disappoint.
ALSO OUT NOW! "LUMPY MONEY" - part of a Zappa Family Trust Project/Object Audio Documentary series - celebrates the 40th Anniversary of Frank Zappa's Masterworks "Lumpy Gravy" & "We're Only In It For The Money." Contains unique and rare versions of both legendary albums (released digitally in pristine audio quality for the 1st time), nuggets from the Vault (studio outtakes, single versions, instrumental mixes, FZ interviews) with extensive booklet featuring photos and liner notes from David Fricke & Gail Zappa.
Shattering conventions – musical, social, political – was the life's work of Frank Zappa, the iconoclastic musical genius, rock legend and intellectual firebrand of the late 20th century whose work is equally revered by hardcore rockers and serious musical scholars. Zappa, who died in 1993 at the age of 52, is the subject and spokesman of EAT THAT QUESTION: Frank Zappa in His Own Words, Thorsten Sch&tte's documentary which premiered at 2016 Sundance and will be released by Sony Pictures Classics.
The film is an energetic celebration of Zappa and his extraordinary musical and political legacy, told entirely through a treasure trove of archival footage culled from the performer's 30-year career in entertainment. Weaving together rare TV interviews and performances from around the world, the film explores Frank Zappa's bravura musicianship and eccentric charisma--his outspoken and outrageous combination of slicing acerbic wit, righteous indignation, and anti-authoritarian irreverence.
Through archival film material of Zappa live, once buried in oblivion and unearthed by Sch&tte, EAT THAT QUESTION portrays the essence and landmarks of a unique career and creates an eclectic portrait of one of the most original composers and cerebral minds of the 20th century. Zappa's provocative music and ideas cut across generations, while his goal of freeing the listener from conformity still resonates today.

Strange to be writing this in public, but I don't know how else to respond.
After reading the article in The New York Times, I'm not sure how else to reach you. If we talk through our lawyers, it's not because I want that. It's because you've refused to talk any other way. I've been reaching out to you for months. I even tried to set up a family meeting so we could discuss all of our family issues, but you repeatedly said you couldn't fit it into your schedule, and that you weren't available to attend without your lawyers present.
Instead, you've given this incomplete, misleading story to the NYT and the media, and invited the whole world to take sides about our family business. Now, we're becoming &that family& & the spoiled brats arguing in public about who deserves what.
I understand you're hurting and angry. We all are. But the more we fight about this in the press, the worse it gets for all of us. We're not gaining anything by doing this in public.
If you're not willing to talk to me, though, I don't know what else to do. The New York Times has a story about a version of me that isn't based on facts or reality, and I don't know how else to set the record straight & or get you to talk to me & except to write this here, where people can form opinions by reading what I said for themselves...
Hey Everybody,
People have been asking so I just wanted to clarify that the family is proud to give Alex Winter and his project our complete support, as well as unrestricted access to the Vault. This is the first time we've ever opened the Vault to someone outside of our family, but Alex is an exceptional filmmaker and storyteller, and we are excited to see him tell Frank's story.
While we appreciate that the
will help us with the larger project of preserving the Vault, I want to make sure everyone knows that this is NOT our project but we absolutely SUPPORT the project and Alex, and that the Zappa Family Trust will not receive any of the funds Alex raises during the Kickstarter (though if someone makes the $9 million pledge, which would obviously be awesome, a portion of that pledge will be used to purchase the house from the family at its market value).
Alongside the rest of you, we're excited to see what Alex and his team will find.

ZAPPA FAMILY TRUST REGAINS CONTROL OF ICONIC MUSICIAN&S EXTENSIVE CATALOG
GLOBAL LICENSE/DISTRIBUTION DEAL SIGNED WITH UNIVERSAL MUSIC ENTERPRISES
CATALOG OF 60 RECORDINGS TO BE LAUNCHED WITH JULY 31 RELEASE OF 12 TITLES
Back home where it belongs, the music of FRANK ZAPPA is now back in the
hands of the ZAPPA FAMILY TRUST.
To celebrate this, the estate has signed a global license and distribution
deal with UNIVERSAL MUSIC ENTERPRISES to release 60 of the
iconic composer&s recordings. The roll-out kicks off July 31 with 12
recordings, with another dozen recordings to be released monthly
through the end of 2012.
&The ink is not yet dry on The Zappa Family Trust's worldwide deal with
Universal Music Enterprises,& says Gail Zappa. &They made us the offer we
couldn't refuse--for all the right reasons. It is a win-win for all of us, but
mostly for Frank Zappa. Long may his baton wave. We are so ready to go.&
&The artist and composer, Frank Zappa, is one of the most important and
influential artists in music history with his prolific body of work, including his
breakthrough rock &n roll concept albums. We are honored that Gail Zappa
and the Zappa Family Trust have entrusted us with his legacy. We intend to
honor him and bring high quality releases, digital and physical, for his new
and longtime fans,& said Bruce Resnikoff, President/CEO, Universal Music
Enterprises (UMe).
Now fully back in hands of the Zappa Family Trust--headed by Zappa&s
widow Gail Zappa--the releases will honor the iconic legacy of the
composer, musician, bandleader and filmmaker. ZAPPA was posthumously
inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1995 and received the
Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award in 1997 (although the family would like to know where it is). The official biography: Frank Zappa,
American composer, .
The UME deal is for the entire Zappa Catalog as it appeared on Frank
Zappa's own independent label, Barking Pumpkin Records. Many of the
original analog masters have been re-mastered for this occasion. Yes that's
right, you heard right. The entire Catalog, in all its spiffnificent glory will
launch July 31, just in time for Frank Zappa&s daughter DIVA&s birthday--
an occasion that will be celebrated along with GAIL, sister MOON UNIT and
brothers DWEEZIL and AHMET.

Frank Zappa statue to be dedicated on Sunday, September 19 at the Southeast Anchor Branch of the Enoch Pratt Free Library located at 3601 Eastern Avenue. Additional details are forthcoming.
The sculpture is a gift to the city of Baltimore orchestrated by three guys from Lithuania: Saulius Paukstys, Saulius Pilinkus and Arturas Baublys.
It is a replica of the bust of Frank Zappa installed in Vilnius (pictured here), created by artist Konstantinas Bogdanas. The gift and location were approved by the Baltimore City Public Art Commission and sanctioned by the family.
Legendary musician and composer Frank Zappa was born in Baltimore in 1940 and passed away in 1993, at home in Los Angeles. He is internationally recognized as one of the most innovative composers and musicians of the 20th century with a career spanning more than 30 years.

Most of you probably know that Mothers' Day, apart from coming from an ancient pagan ritual, was originally instituted by women in this country who were protesting war and their sons having to fight.
And that day, according to Hallmark, now falls on the second Sunday in May.
But we here at the UTILITY MUFFIN RESEARCH KITCHEN recognize Mothers Day as May 10th every year - the anniversary of the day in 1964 that Frank Zappa named his band.
This year, to commemorate his work, we are making four more albums available to you on a digital level at Barfko-Swill.
Official Digital Downloads now available:

200 MOTELS & BABY SNAKES -
Together At Last
Presented by American Cinematheque
Aero Theatre 1328 Montana Avenue at 14th Street in Santa Monica
Thursday, August 27, 2009
Box office opens at 6:30pm
Screening at 7:30pm
This, from American Cinematheque online:
Frank Zappa Double Feature:
New 35mm Print! 200 MOTELS, 1971, MGM Repertory, 98 min. Dir. Tony Palmer & Frank Zappa. &Touring can make you crazy, that's what 200 Motels is all about.&- Frank Zappa. Frank Zappa was a mad scientist constantly pushing the boundaries of music, film, and video. 200 MOTELS Zappa combined The Royal Philharmonic Orchestra with The Mothers of Invention and filmed the bulk of the soundtrack live. Zappa's favorite topics -- groupies, mundane Americana and inside jokes -- are the themes of this film. Musical interludes provide a transcending break, where things like place, time and plot are forgotten. With Theodore Bikel, Keith Moon and Ringo Starr as Frank Zappa.
BABY SNAKES, 1979, Intercontinental Absurdities, 164 min. Dir. Frank Zappa. In 1977, Frank Zappa gave a major concert in New York that gave full rein to the astonishing range of his talents as a composer, musician, band-leader, conductor, satirist and ringmaster. Orchestrating the band, the event and the audience & the concert was a triumphant celebration of the breadth of his uniquely idiosyncratic vision. Zappa filmed the concert and spent the next two years editing, polishing and adding sequences to the film including ground-breaking claymation. As usual, Zappa was far ahead of his time & and the film did not enjoy wide distribution on release.
And we have this to say:
It's Ringo Starr as Larry the Dwarf disguised as Frank Zappa and furthermore we all know that Baby Snakes (which stars the New York audience) is about &people who do stuff that is not normal.&
See you there.
UNCLE MEAT GOES TO HOLLYWOOD
First ever U.S. screening of Frank Zappa's UNCLE MEAT
Presented by American Cinematheque
Egyptian Theatre 6712 Hollywood Boulevard
Sunday, August 2, 2009
Box office opens at 6pm
Screening at 7:30pm
UNCLE MEAT,
By 1968 Frank Zappa was deep into this masterpiece of conceptual continuity but ultimately had completed UNCLE MEAT principal photography by 1985 for the launch of his Honker Home Video label.
Zappa uses footage from his &Absolutely Free&-era residency at the Garrick Theater in New York, and from the &We&re Only in it for the Money& album cover shoot and edits of The Play from the 1968 concert at The Royal Festival Hall, London.
The cast in UNCLE MEAT includes FZ's film editor, Phyllis Smith, Don Preston and footage with other original Mothers & band members, Ray Collins, Roy Estrada, Jimmy Carl Black, James &Motorhead& Sherwood, Bunk Gardner, Billy Mundi, Art Tripp, Ian Underwood, Aynsley Dunbar while Rodney Bingenheimer, Linda Ronstadt, Meredith Monk and others tag along for the ride at the legendary Hollywood Ranch Market on Vine Street. Acclaimed director of photography Haskell Wexler contributes camerawork.

In 1966 the first Double Album in Rock 'N' Roll which was also the first Concept Album in Rock 'N' Roll and the first album in Rock 'N' Roll in which the music revealed disciplines and constructs far more familiar in the world of classical music, made it's way into the hearts, minds and consciousness of just enough of those people under the age of 30 to cause them to Freak Out! beyond their wildest expectations, even in Kansas! It did happen here, there and everywhere. And we are pleased to present the Sessions, the Man and the Music that made it all possible. (And impossible!)
MOFO, like the release that inspired it, is a double release. Frank Zappa's Official Album #77 is the Limited Edition which contains 4 Discs of audio magnificence and a 60 page booklet of joyous fetishment. Available exclusively through Barkfo-Swill. The Brewers of Lagunitas Freak Out! Ale reaches retailers this week around the Bay Area. Tony Magee, the co-founder of Lagunitas Brewing in Petaluma, worked out an agreement with Zappa's family in Southern California for rights to produce the beer using Zappa's name. The label is the original cover of Freak Out!
This is a most unusual beer for Lagunitas, a brewery famous for big, malty bombs. Freak Out! is strong, all right & about 7.3 percent alcohol by volume. But the taste is quite dry with a strong finish with a lot of hop bitterness. If a huge hop package pleases you, don't miss this one. It's a blend of pale malt and malted wheat and a couple of new hops, which Lagunitas isn't talking about.
Freak Out! is the first of a series of Zappa tributes, Magee says. &We will be doing a label every nine months or so as the other (Zappa album) anniversaries come up,& he says. &Next, Absolutely Free next summer, then Lumpy Gravy and We're Only In It For The Money, Uncle Meat, Hot Rats and so on and so on and so on. ... Fun, it is!&
REMINDER! For those of you in Los Angeles this month we are pleased to announce Baby Snakes is making its appearance in the Mods and Rockers Film Festival, on August 31st at The Aero Theatre in Santa Monica.
This is the last surviving 35mm print of the groundbreaking film - with a stereo soundtrack rather than the originally released mono version.
There will be a Q&A with Gail Zappa and Martin Lewis, and program begins at 7:30 pm. General admission tickets are $9 each.
Gail Zappa will be interviewed on Tuesday, August 15th between 2:00-3:00 PST on
on KPFK 90.7 FM in Los Angeles, and 98.7 FM in Santa Barbara.
