Our boat floated on between walls of
forest. It was too thick for us to get a view of the land we were passing
through, though we knew from the map that our river must be passing through
chains of hills from time to time. Nowhere did we find a place where we could
have landed: although the jungle did not actually spread right down into
the river, banks of soft mud prevented us from going ashore. In any case, what
would we have gained by landing? The country was full of snakes and other
dangerous creatures and the jungle was so thick that one would be able to
advance slowly, cutting one's way with knives the whole way. So we stayed in
the boat, hoping that when we reached the sea, a friendly fisherman would pick
us up and take us to civilization.
As for water, there was a choice. We
could drink the muddy river water, or die of thirst. We drank the water. Men
who have just escaped from what appeared to be certain death lost all worries
about such small things as diseases caused by dirty water. In fact, none of us
suffered from any illness as a result.
One day we passed another village, but
fortunately nobody saw us. We did not wish to risk being taken prisoners a
second time: we might not be so lucky as to escape in a stolen boat again.

18【题文】If you travel to a new exhibition at the San Francisco Conservatory of
Flowers, you will have chances to see some meat-eating plants. Take bladderworts, a kind of such plant, for
example. They appear so small and grow in a quiet pond. &But these are the
fastest known killers of the plant kingdom, able to capture a small insect in 1/50 of a second using a trap door!&
Once the trap door closes on the
victim, the enzymes (酶)similar to those in the human stomach slowly digest the insert.
When dinner is over, the plant opens the trap door and is ready to trap again.
Meat-eating plants grow mostly in wet
areas with soil that doesn't offer much food nutrition. In such conditions,
these amazing plants have developed insect traps to get their nutritional needs
over thousands of years. North America has more such plants than any other
continents.
Generally speaking, the traps may have
attractive appearance to fool the eye, like pitcher plants, which get their
name because they look like beautiful pitchers full of nectar (花蜜).
Hair-like growths along the pitcher
walls ensure that nothing can escape, and the digestive enzymes can get to
work. A tiny insect can be digested in a few hours, but a fly takes a couple of
days.
Some of these pitchers are large enough
to hold 7.5 liters. Meat-eating plants
only eat people in science fiction movies, but sometimes a bird or other small
animals will discover that a pitcher plant isn't a good place to get a drink.

accident.
Meanwhile, at a nearby church, more
than 250 family members and friends

21【题文】
You wake up in the morning, the day is
beautiful and the plans for the day are what you have been looking forward to for a long time. Then the telephone rings, you
say hello, and the drama starts. The person on tbe other end has a depressing
tone in his voice as he starts to tell you how terrible his morning is and that
there is nothing to look forward to. Are you still in a wonderful mood?
Impossible!
Communieating with negative people can
wash out your happiness. It may not change what you think, but communicating
long enough with them will make you feel depressed for a moment or a long time.
Life brings ups and downs, but some
people are stuck in the wrong idea that life has no happiness to offer. They
only feel glad when they make others feel bad. No wonder they can hardly win
others' pity or respect.
When you communicate with positive
people, your spirit stays happy and therefore more positive things are
attracted. When the knife of a negative person is put in you, you have the
heavy feeling that, all in all, brings you down.
Sometimes we have no choice but to
communicate with negative people. This could be a co-worker, or a relative. In
this case, say what needs to be said as little as possible. Sometimes it feels
good to let out your anger back to the negative person, but this is to lower
you to that same negative level and they won't feel ashamed of themselves about
that.
Negativity often affects happiness
without even being realized. The negative words of others at the start of the
day can be attached to you throughout the rest of your day, which makes you
feel bad and steals your happiness. Life is too short to feel negative. Stay
positive and avoid negativity as much as possible.

Robby was 11 when his mother dropped him off for his first piano lesson. I prefer students to begin at an earlier age. Robby said that it had always been his mother’s dream to hear him play the piano, so l took him on as a student.
Robby tried and tried while l listened and encouraged him and gave him more instructions. But he just did not have any inborn(天生的)ability.
I only saw his mother from a distance. She always waved and smiled but never came in. Then one day Robby stopped coming to our lessons. I thought about calling him but l guessed he had decided to try something else.
I was also glad that he stopped coming for the sake of my career. However, several weeks before the recital(演奏会) of my students, Robby came, telling me that he never stopped practicing and begged me to allow him to take part in it. I agreed, but l made him perform last in the program, so l could save his poor performance through my “curtain closer”.
I was surprised when he announced that he had chosen one piece of Mozart’s. Never had l heard a piece of Mozart’s played so well by someone at his age. When he finished, everyone was cheering.
I ran up and put my arms around Robby in joy. “I’ve never heard you play like that, Robby! How could you do it?”
“Well, Miss Hondorf. Do you remember l told you my mom was sick? Actually she died this morning. She was born deaf, so tonight was the first time she could hear me play. I wanted to make it special. I knew I could.”
That night, Robby was the teacher and I was the student. He taught me so many important things about life.
Why might Robby have stopped coming to piano lessons suddenly?
A. He thought that his teacher disliked him.
B. His mother might have been seriously ill.
C. His mother died and he didn’t need to play any longer.
D. He lost heart and believed that he would never make it.
We can learn from the text that&&&&&&&&&&& .
A. the writer thought students shouldn’t begin playing the piano too early
B. no one else could play the piece of Mozart’s as well as Robby
C. the writer thought that Robby had given up his piano lessons
D. only by practicing at home did Robby learn to play well
From the underlined sentence, we can infer that&&&&&&&&&&& .
A. the writer couldn’t teach so many students at a time
B. the writer looked down upon Robby and disliked him
C. with Robby in the recital, the other children couldn’t play well
D. the writer thought Robby was a bad advertisement for her teaching
The author made Robby perform last because&&&&&&&&&& .
A. she wanted to do something to save a poor performance
B. the one who performed last always performed very well
C. Robby thought his mother would come at last
D. Robby asked the writer to do so

For many of us, cartoon strips are simply one of our pastimes. The popular Japanese manga(漫画) provides us with an escape from reality into a world of fantasy, adventure and romance. With much less text and pictures running for pages, it fits perfectly into today’s fast, throwing away city lifestyle. But Tsai Chih-chung,a famous Taiwanese illustrator (漫画家), doesn’t agree. He believes cartoons can be a bridge connecting traditional Chinese culture and wisdom with the modern& world in a much wittier and more acceptable way.He has interpreted Lao Zi, Confucius, Mencius,Zhuang Zi and Sun Zi and made their works accessible to a global audience. He has also produced two books about Zen (禅宗), introducing oriental philosophy. His cartoons are humorous yet full of wisdom and are admired as an easy way to learn Chinese classics. After avoiding the public for ten years, Tsai made a comeback in late April with seven new works. But does his age, 61, work as a gap between him and his young readers? Tsai doesn’t think so. The topics he has covered range from philosophy in a time of individuality to the learning and memorizing techniques used at school. “Every child is a genius and has the potential beyond his own imagination, ” he said.If popular Japanese manga is purely for entertainment, Tsai’s work, to a large extent, is to light the power of thinking in a light-hearted way. Tsai uses differenr forms of water to refer to people. In his eyes some people are like an ocean, some are like vapor, while others may be ice or rain. But in essence(本质上)they share a similarity-human being’s forever chasing for the true and the good. “The person who thinks over life issues is not necessarily a scholar or a philosopher,” he said. “I’ve dedicated my whole life to thinking and individual freedom, not making a living.”【小题1】What is the main idea of the first paragraph in the passage?A.Japanese manga is a simple way of killing time.B.What Japanese manga is mainly about.C.Japanese manga presents a world of fantasy, adventure and romance.D.Why Japanese manga is so popular.【小题2】The underlined word “it” in paragraph l refers to_______.A.much less textB.Japanese mangaC.pictures running for pagesD.an escape from reality【小题3】In Tsai Chih-chung’s opinion, cartoon_______.A.connects traditional Chinese culture and wisdomB.helps connect Chinese classics with modern worldC.uses a wiser and acceptable way to draw cartoonsD.builds up a bridge between cartoons and illustration【小题4】Compared to Japanese manga, Tsai’s works are_______A.mainly designed for a pure time killer for allB.more popular with young readers in China nowC.to inspire people to think in a cheerful wayD.much more interesting and instructive【小题5】According to the passage, which of the following is TRUE about Tsai Chih-chung?A.He values more thinking and personal freedom than making a living.B.He says that one who thinks over life is either a scholar or a philosopher.C.He thinks some people are like ocean, some like vapor, while others like ice cream.D.Tsai devoted his life to creating cartoons in order to make money.
