David Cameron said today he believes it would be wrong to stick with Europe
“come what may”.
In a major strengthening of his rhetoric on Europe, the prime minister told
business leaders at the annual conference of the CBI that claims that
uncertainty over Europe was damaging business confidence were overblown.
“If there has been uncertainty, why is it that there has been such an extraordinary
period of investment into our country? There have been months under this
Government where we have been getting more investment in Britain than in the
rest of the European Union put together.”
This was disputed by Sir Michael Rake, the CBI president, who said that four out
of five CBI members would vote to stay in the European Union in a referendum
because it was “overwhelmingly” in the UK’s national interest.
“Do not be fooled - by withdrawing from Europe, we do not somehow become
more open to trade elsewhere. Instead we turn inwards, going against the
grain of an increasingly connected world,” he said.
Mr Cameron told the conference that Europe “isn’t working” and that a plan
was needed to change it.
“You never get anywhere in life unless you have a clear strategy and a plan,”
he used his own address to the gathering to declare.
“And you never get anywhere unless that strategy and that plan includes
all the things that matter to your customers and your shareholders.

Britain is facing a mild, wet and blustery winter with stronger winds and
heavier rain than normal, Met Office forecasters have predicted in their
outlook for the next three months.
Weather patterns for at least the coming two months are likely to be dominated
by a succession of storms sweeping in from the Atlantic, similar to the
remains of Hurricane Gonzalo which raked the UK last month.
Gales and swathes of rain will hit the west next week and spread across the
country, continuing well into December, said forecasters.
“The outlook suggests the continuing risk of our weather coming in from the
Atlantic, which brings unsettled conditions, during the first part of the
three-month period,” said the Met Office.
Commenting on the outlook in the Met
Office blog, forecasters acknowledged that gales and rain were “a fairly
normal set-up” for the time of y
National Grid is proposing to remove eyesore electricity pylons from eight of
Britain’s most beautiful landscapes.
Twelve sections of power lines have been shortlisted in which ugly metal
towers could be removed and up to 25km of high-voltage transmission cables
buried underground, at a cost of ?7 million for each pylon.
National parks in Snowdonia, the Peak District, the New Forest and the Brecon
Beacons and areas of outstanding natural beauty (AONB) in Dorset, the High
Weald, the North Wessex Downs and the Tamar Valley are set to benefit.
Ofgem has given approval for the cost of the ?500m scheme to be paid by
electricity customers through their fuel bills, spread over a period of
years until 2021.
The work is costly because it involves digging trenches 50 metres wide and 2m
deep to bury the transmission lines.
