The Images of Women in the Vanity Fair
I Introduction
Vanity Fair, written by William Makepeace Thackeray, is a powerful moral novel which is also regarded as one of the greatest critical realistic works in Victorian Age. The book reflects the relationship between people in the society. It portrayed two heroines: Becky Sharp and Amelia Sedley. After completed their studies, the two girls prepared to depart for Amelia’s house in Russell Square. Because of their different family background and environment, they choose different lifestyle. Becky, who is ruthless and brilliant, defies her poverty-stricken background to rise in English society. Different from Becky, Amelia is born in a rich family, but she has to endure a lot of difficulties after grown up.
This paper seeks to answer the following questions: what are the characteristics of the two heroines, Becky and Amelia? What are their differences in different aspects such as the attitudes toward society, love and marriage, and friendship? Becky Sharp is born in a poor family, and she is the representative of the lower class. She has more chances to come into contact with various kinds of people and the ugly society. She makes use of all instruments and advantages of her and the man around her to reach higher social position in order to keep her legs still in the Vanity Fair. Opposite with Becky, Amelia represents the vitality and virtue of the middle class, and she is the shining side of the society.
II Introduction of the Two Heroines
Amelia Sedley: good natured but passive and naive. She has a round, rosy snub-nosed face and brown hair. Although she is not outstandingly beautiful, she is well liked by most men because of her sweet personality, a popularity which is often resented by other women. She marries George Osborne against the wishes of George's father, and is devoted to him despite his neglect of her and flirtation with Becky. When George dies at the battle of Waterloo, she brings up little George alone

Hillary Clinton - who is poised to be the first female president if she wins her party primary and the general election - has a problem with women. Slightly more than half of them, 51 percent, do not like herGOP front-runner Trump is viewed unfavorably by 59 percent of Americans, 43 percent of whom shared an intense dislike for him. Clinton is strongly opposed by 39 percent of the country - and counting. It took her another eight months to post such low ratings last time made an attempt at the White House, though it's notable that ABC News did not take as many polls in 2007 as it is now.Still, her favorability rating throughout that fall and the subsequent winter was right side up, and for months now, it has been upside down, polling has consistently shown. In two of the last three ABC News/Washington Post polls since the end of May she's been underwater with voters, inviting speculation that other members of her party - Joe Biden, Elizabeth Warren and Michael Bloomberg, to name a few - could try to capitalize off the weakness by making a late entry into the race.

Women and young people are among Barack Obama's core constituencies, and without them he may not have won.Exit polling from the 2012 election shows that roughly 55 percent of women chose him as their president over GOP nominee Mitt Romney. He did even better with youth, defined there as ages 18-29. Six in 10 voted for him in that election.Clinton, is however, better liked by women than the sitting vice president, scoring two points higher in than him with females in the survey released today. That Clinton polls better than her competitors in that demographic group is a salient point, says EMILY's List, a progressive women's group that is backing the former first lady in her presidential bid.'Hillary remains the strongest candidate of either party among women because of her life-long commitment to creating opportunity for women – which stands in stark contrast to the extreme and out of touch Republican field who find new ways to alienate women every day,' the organization's press, secretary Marcy Stech, told DailyMail.com.
Clinton's saving grace in any match-up may be that she's well-regarded by blacks and Hispanics, 79 and 68 percent, respectively. Those are the same demographic groups that Trump has angered in his time as a candidate. According to the, survey data shows that more than 80 percent of African-Americans and Latinos gave Trump the thumbs down. African-Americans' specific beef with The Donald is not immediately clear. The Clintons have are highly respected in the black community, however - Bill Clinton is sometimes referred to as the first black president - and African-Americans have historically given their allegiance to the Democratic Party.Joe Biden would also do well with blacks, if he were on the ballot, the Washington Post suggests, as 67 percent of those polled said they liked him.If Biden does seek the Democratic nomination, the survey shows he'd have serious work to do with Hispanics, however. He's nearly 20 points behind Clinton when it comes to Latinos.
Thumbs down for The Donald: More than percent of African-Americans and Latinos have soured on Trump, the GOP front-runner for presidentThe source of Trump's image problems in the Latino community is no mystery. He's went after Mexicans for using so-called 'anchor babies' to stake long-term residency claims in the country. The term is considered offensive by many Hispanics, and his repeated use of it is no doubt stripping away at his support in that community.Jeb Bush, whose wife, Columba, is a native of Mexico, may have also been hurt by the anchor baby debate, which he inadvertently inserted himself into by tossing out the term in a radio interview. He brought his likeability score out of the red and back into the black over the summer only to find himself back on voters' bad side in ABC News' latest poll.A net 55 percent of voters have negative impressions of the former Florida governor, while 37 percent express positive feelings about him.Looking at just Hispanics, the Washington Post says he has 43 percent on his side. He's not well-received by 46 percent.
