After the seemingly endless winter, no one could be blamed for wanting an early jump on summer. The good news is that you can do so this month, at beach getaways that promise sun, surf and temperatures in the 70s, 80s and 90s, but without the crowds or the high prices of the peak season. (Puerto Vallarta)Between the Sierra Madre Mountains and Banderas Bay is the CasaMagna Marriott. Not only does it have the Ohtli Spa, one of the best in Mexico with 22,000 square feet of facilities (whirlpools, foot baths and an aromatherapy steam room and sauna), but it also
a sandy, full-ser and rooms decorated with Mexican touches. For a nighttime resort respite, check out the Old Town Art Walk on Wednesday evenings this spring. With nearly two dozen galleries in El Centro, the self-guided tour allows visitors to meet area artists. In mid-May an ocean-view room with a king bed comes in at just 5 a night ― not bad, and you get a -a-day resort credit. If you opt for double beds at the same price, the room comfortably fits four. Over New Year’s the same room costs 3 a night.5月中旬,特大床海景房的价格仅为每晚135美元,还挺划算的,而且每天都返还50美元的度假村优惠券。 (Pangkor Laut)Billing itself as “One Island, One Resort,” the Pangkor Laut resort is indeed on a private island, three miles off the west coast of Peninsular Malaysia. It has white sand beaches, rocky outcrops and even a rain forest. Nature enthusiasts will appreciate that the resort takes up only a small part of the 300-acre island, and includes Emerald Bay, so called because the water reflects the color of the island’s many trees. But the facilities are abundant: tenn a spa with healing huts, bathho and even a library. With sailing, yachting, snorkeling, fishing and sightseeing excursions available (one of which includes visits to a restored Dutch colonial fort and a Taoist temple on a neighboring island), there is plenty to do, besides eating at the seven restaurants, most of which feature Asian Pacific cuisine. A Hill Villa with a private balcony overlooking the gardens costs 7 a night, including breakfast, a third less than during high season. (Aruba)It may be a bit cloudy from time to time in May, but, for the savings, avoiding the high season in the Caribbean is well worth the wait. A stay at the Ritz-Carlton, Aruba on Palm Beach, which celebrated its first anniversary in November, costs nearly 9 a night in February versus 9 a night in May for a room with a king bed and limited ocean view. Every one of the 320 rooms has a private balcony with at least some glimpse of the turquoise sea.5月的阿鲁巴可能偶尔会有阴天,但是从省钱的角度看,避开加勒比地区的旺季还是很值的。 There are also four fine-dining restaurants and a 15,000-square-foot spa. Those who enjoy blackjack late at night will appreciate the casino, where table games run until 3 a.m. and more than 300 slot machines are available 24 hours a day. But if you are looking for culture and a beach break, 10 minutes away is Aruba’s capital, Oranjestad, home to Dutch Colonial architecture, boutique shopping and hiking through the Arikok National Park, with a coastline dotted by cactuses. (Punta Cana)In the easternmost province of the Dominican Republic and named after the cane palms in the area, Punta Cana may be a bit humid in May (temperatures can approach 100 degrees). But at the Sanctuary Cap Cana, three miles of white sand beaches should combat the heat. The resort is part of a gated community, and its guests have access to the Punta Espada (a Jack Nicklaus golf course) and a nearby harbor marina. The 20,000-square-foot spa has a studio for yoga and Pilates, a fitness center and a hydrotherapy circuit, but the resort also offers cocktail-making tutorials and dance classes. Outside the grounds, in Punta Cana, one can also find activities such as zip lines, horseback riding and day trips to see the Zona Colonial (Colonial Zone), a Unesco World Heritage site. A junior suite with a king bed or two queen beds, with its own furnished terrace overlooking the sea, costs 0 a day in May, versus 5 a day one week earlier at the end of April. (Key West)Given that temperatures are the same in March through May (in the 70s and 80s) but that the hotel prices are noticeably different, it seems that waiting until late in the season has its rewards. What’s more, tourism tapers off now, letting you land a prime spot at both the beaches and bars. At the Inn at Key West, a boutique hotel with a large tropical freshwater pool and fitness center, a premium poolside room with a patio is 9 a night, excluding taxes, in mid-May. In February, that same room is 9 a night. Beyond the Conch Republic beaches, Key West has art galleries galore, a butterfly and nature conservatory, every water sport imaginable and, of course, a crazy night life. Just minutes from Duval Street, one of the best places to party, the hotel is close enough that crawling home should not be a problem. /8631.The realization that the next incoming high school freshmen were born in the 2000s, meaning the high school reign of 90s babies is over… and that we#39;re… old…90后们意识到下一届高中新生将是00后的天下,高中由90后承包的时代结束了…我们老了…2.Prior to now, the most ill-fitted individuals that could possibly get married or raise a child were the only ones doing so, but now the people who are getting engaged and pregnant are, y#39;know, your friends. 3.You#39;re officwhat you#39;re going to do.; Your entire life is defined by your future, not by what it is now.It#39;s the only thing people ask you about, and really the only thing you#39;re able to focus on. 4.Dating is awkward because you#39;re either going to get engaged or break up, and more likely than not in a short period of time.Gone are the days of just dating because you like each other. If you#39;re in school, you either expire by graduation or stick a ring on it. 5.You#39;re around peak weight gain time. You can#39;t stomach pthose who got f because by this point, it#39;s basically all of us. 6.You start saywell, when I was in college,; or, ;we didn#39;t have that when I went to high school!; and you follow them up with: ;wow, I every goddamn time. ;7.You start to befriend your siblings and appreciate everything your parents have done for you. 8.Prior to turning 21, you think your life will completely change once you finally do.You#39;ll go out with your friends, buy yourself wine, it will be heavenly.Post-turning 21, you realize that excitement lasted about a week, and now you actually have to pay for all your drinks, and that from here on out, you#39;re done with birthday milestones you actually want to celebrate. 9.The celebrities the world idolizes are your age, if not younger.Kate Upton is 21.Justin Bieber is 20. 10.Realizing that up until, y#39;know, now, someone being 21 was really old (and cool) and you thought by this point, you#39;d not feel like a kid still, and yet here you are. 11.All your friends are either abroad, going abroad, graduating college or leaving you for another city or marriage or job. 12.Nobody takes you seriously.Your parents still don#39;t totally trust that you can manage on your own, trying to date anybody over 25 is impossible-to-absolutely-disastrous because nobody with their life together wants to be with someone in their early 20s. 13.If and when you do make it into an office environment ― for an internship or what not ―- the overarching sentoh my GOD I cannot believe you were born in the 90s!;如果你进入社会后――无论是实习还是别的什么,大家对你的第一份感叹总是:;噢,神额,我不敢相信你是个90后!;14.You start seeing how people turned out, in all the sad and awesome ways you predicted in high school. What they became and did, how their stories summed up at the end of the day and how funny it is that the wild party girl became a mother and the studious nerd became a young and successful social media *guru*. /213The robots are coming and they want your job. Savioke recently developed a three-foot tall SaviOne robot that replaces the human delivery of snacks and amenities to your hotel room. The robotic butler can navigate your room, make deliveries and even ride the elevator ― all without sleeping or going to the bathroom. In addition, robots don’t quit their jobs, whereas the hotel industry, according to the American H Lodging Association, experiences staff turnover of around 50% in non-management staff. Moving beyond the hotel industry, Momentum Machines invented a burger-flipping robot that can produce a burger every 10 seconds. This robot replaces three full-time kitchen staff and takes up far less space, potentially able to reduce costs. Momentum Machines Co-Founder Alexandros Vardakostas recently said in an interview at Lemnos Labs that his robot “isn’t meant to make employees more efficient. It’s meant to completely obviate them.” Both Savioke and Momentum Machines are early signs of the upcoming Technology Revolution. Spawned by advances in robotics, big data, cloud computing and mobile, the revolution could replace millions of jobs. If you recall, the Industrial Revolution was no different than what we will likely see in the future. In 1820, the UK employed approximately 240,000 cotton hand weavers. Within 40 years, 99% of those jobs vanished as a result of the mechanical loom. About half, 47%, of today’s jobs could be automated away over the next 20 years, according to a recent study by Oxford University. Following the Industrial Revolution during the early 1800s, new inventions created more than enough new work to replace the jobs that were dislocated. But given the ability of today’s technology startups to reach massive scale with minimal headcount, things very well might be different this time around. In 2012, Instagram reached 30 million users and was acquired by Facebook FB -3.35% for
billion ― all with just 13 employees. By contrast, Kodak filed for bankruptcy in 2012 and employed 145,000 people during its peak. Indeed, disruption is coming. So what should we do about it? If history is any indication, some will push for protectionism, shielding certain jobs in order to preserve employment levels in the short-term. Over the next decade, 233,000 taxi drivers and 1.7 million truck drivers in the U.S. could be at risk of having their jobs automated away by driverless vehicles. Given that many cities have aly attempted to block the expansion of Uber, we could experience similar tensions when driverless cars arrive. However, in the long-term, attempting to block innovation is short-sighted and makes countries less competitive relative to others who are willing to accept new, more efficient technologies. Over the next two decades, the most pain will be felt by lesser-skilled workers most likely to lose their jobs to automation. As a result, the gap between the “haves and the have-nots” will widen. This could potentially create tension and fuel lobbying to increase the minimum wage. But like protectionism, raising the minimum wage could ultimately be counter-productive. Increasing minimum wage for hotel or fast-food employees, for example, could actually make companies more interested in automating away those positions if it actually saves companies more money. Instead of protecting jobs or increasing the minimum wage, we should seriously consider improving America’s antiquated education system. Education is what saved the nation during the 19th century and it could be critical this time as well. According to MIT Economist David Autor, “By the late 19th century … many Americans recognized that farm employment was declining, industry was rising and their children would need additional education to earn a living.” The World Bank notes that between 1900 and 1940, the percentage of 14- to 17-year-olds enrolled in high school in the U.S. increased from 10% to 75%. As a result, millions of workers left farms and were able to obtain higher-paying jobs as the economy matured. But this time, we don’t need more schools, we need different schools. Schools will need to place a greater focus on skills that will enable the next generation to benefit from the upcoming technological wave instead of merely getting swept aside. In particular, robots are still horrible communicators and problem solvers. So schools should evolve to emphasize critical thinking and social skills. It is also highly unlikely that during the next couple decades robots will learn how to design and manage themselves, so schools should stress creativity and management skills. In addition to focusing on different skill sets, schools will need to teach students how to work with machines and other emerging technologies. Today, those who have conquered computers have given themselves a much greater chance of succeeding. Tomorrow, the same will be true as it pertains to robots and big data. In a recent paper, Autor observed that people often “overstate the extent of machine substitution for human labor and ignore the strong complementarities.” In 20 years, our success will not necessarily be driven by our quantitative skills or our work effort, but by how well we collaborate with robots. Two years ago, a relative of mine was diagnosed with prostate cancer. Ironically, he is a talented urologist who has performed over 3,000 prostate cancer surgeries, but couldn’t operate on himself. When it came to choosing a doctor, he selected a surgeon who was arguably the best in the world at operating with the da Vinci Surgical System, a robotic surgical system. His physician’s skills were still as important as ever but the robot enabled his doctor to translate his hand movements into smaller, more precise incisions. Although the Technology Revolution will come with its share of challenges, like the Industrial Revolution, it will ultimately enable us to do our jobs better than before and solve problems that we can’t even fathom solving today. (财富中文网)Ryan Feit is CEO and co-founder of SeedInvest, a New York City-based equity crowdfunding platform that connects investors with startups. /718
One of the biggest job stresses is having to fight with competitors and coworkers for clients, commissions, and recognition。 Rather than focusing on your own work, highly competitive fields force you to be constantly aware of what everyone else is doing。 /607
