When families gather for Christmas dinner, some will stick to formal traditions dating back to Grandma's generation. Their tables will be set with the good dishes and silver, and the dress code will be Sunday-best.But in many other homes, this china-and-silver elegance has given way to a stoneware-and-stainless in formality, with dresses assumig an equally casual-Friday look. For hosts and guests, the change means greater simplicity and comfort. For makers of fine china in Britain, it spells economic hard times.Last week Royal Doulton, the largest employer in Stoke-on-Trent, announced that it is 'eliminating 1,000 jobs--one-fifth of its total workforce. That brings to more than 4,000 the number of positions lost in 18 months in the pottery region. Wedgwood and other pottery factories made cuts earlier.Although a strong pound and weak markets in Asia play a role in the downsizing, the layoffs in Stoke have their roots in earthshaking social shifts. A spokesman for Royal Doulton admitted that the company "has been somewhat slow in catching up with the trend" toward casual dining. Families eat together less often, he explained, and more people eat alone, either because they are single or they eat in front of television.Even dinner parties, if they happen at all, have gone casual. In a time of long work hours and demanding family schedules, busy hosts insist, rightly, that it' s better to share a takeout pizza on paper plates in the family room than to wait for the perfect moment or a "real" dinner party. Too often, the perfect moment new ex comes. Iron a fine-patterned tablecloth? Forget it. Polish the silver? Who has time?Yet the loss of formality has its down side. The fine points of etiquette that children might once have learned at the table by observation or instruction from parents and grandparents (" Chew with your mouth dosed." "Keep your elbows off the table.") must be picked up elsewhere. Some companies now offer etiquette seminars for employees who may be competent professionally but clueless socially. The trend toward casual dining has resulted in ______A.bankruptcy of fine china manufacturersB.shrinking of the pottery industryC.restructuring of large enterprisesD.economic recession in Great Britain请帮忙给出正确答案和分析,谢谢!

This was an ordinary day,
nothing special. Mike was walking on the street when he returned to the shop on
the corner. He stopped to look at the front row of shoes, and he felt happy to
see that the pair of shoes he wanted very much was still there. He looked down at his old shoes, and he felt sorry for himself, because he wanted
very much to own them for his coming birthday.
Sadly, the boy walked away,
deep in thought — how to tell his mother about it. He knew very well his mother
had very little money. He decided not to go home at once, because he looked sad
and his mother would notice it. So he went to the park and sat on the grass.
There he saw a boy moving a wheelchair with his hands. Mike looked at him and
was surprised to see that the boy had no feet. He looked at his own feet. “It’s much
better to be without shoes than without feet.” he thought. There was no reason for him to
feel so sorry and sad. So he went away with smile, thinking that he was much luckier and happier.

What are you going to do if you are in a
burning house? How will you escape? Do you know how to save yourself? Please
read the following passage.
  Escaping from a
fire is a serious matter. Knowing what to do during a fire can save your life.
It is important to know the ways you can use and show them to everyone in the
family, such as stairways (楼梯) and fire escapes, but not lifts.
  From the lower
floors of the buildings, escaping through windows is possible. Learn the best
way of leaving through windows with the least chance of serious injury.
  The second floor

hanging by the finger-tips (手指尖) will have a drop of about six feet to the ground. It is about the
height of an average man. Of course, it is safer to jump a short way than to
stay in a burning building.
  Windows are also
useful when you are waiting for help. Be sure to keep the door closed. Or smoke
and fire may be drawn into the room. Keep your head low at the window to be
sure you get fresh air rather than smoke that may have leaked (泄露) into the room.
  On a second or
third floor, the best windows for escape are those which open onto a roof. From

I had a part-time job as a waiter in a Chinese restaurant. One time, when I was
serving food to a middle-aged couple, the wife asked me how the food could be

because I always respect the elderly. As soon as I said that, her face showed
great displeasure. My manager, who happened to hear what I said, took me aside

In my village in China, people are proud of being old. Not so many people live
to be seventy or eighty, and people who reach such an age have the most
knowledge and experience. Young people always respect older people because
they know they can learn from their rich experience.
However, in the United States, people think “growing old” is a problem since
“old” shows that a person is going to retire(退休)
or that the body is not working well. Here many people try to keep themselves
away from growing old by doing exercises or jogging, and women put on makeup,
hoping to look young. When I told the couple in the restaurant that I respect

As you move around your
home, take a good look at the things you have. It is likely that your living
room will have a television set and a video, and your kitchen a washing machine
and a microwave oven. Your bedroom drawers will be filled with almost three
times as many clothes as you need. You almost certainly own a car and possibly
a home computer, holiday abroad at least once a year and eat out at least once
Now, perhaps, more than ever
before, people are wondering what life is all about, and what it is for.
Seeking material success is beginning to trouble large numbers of people around
the world. They feel that the long hours work culture to make more money is
eating up their lives, leaving them very little time or energy for family or
pastimes. Many are turning to other ways of living and downshifting is one of
them. Six percent of workers in Britain took the decision to downshift last
One couple who downshifted

meetings. They both earned a large amount of money but began to feel that life
was passing them by.
Nowadays, they run a farm in

no longer have any holidays.&& However, I think it’s made us stronger as a family, and the children are a lot happier.
Liz, however, is not quite
sure. “I used to enjoy my
job, even though it was hard work and long hours. I’m
not really a country girl, but I suppose I’m gradually
getting used to looking after the animals. One thing I do like, though, is
being able to see more of my children. My advice for other people wanting to do
the same is not to think about it too much or you might not do it at all.”

My parents moved from Mexico to South Texas in the early 90s with the hope for a brighter future for their family of
nine---my parents, four boys and three girls. My parents have always wanted the
best for us and they have done everything possible to encourage us to get a
university degree. Never did they think that by pushing us that direction, it
also meant encouraging us to move away and be distant from each other.
Initially(起初), getting accustomed to the American culture and
lifestyle was very difficult for my parents. They come from a culture where
kids grow up together, go to school together and most of the time live in the
same neighborhood. From our point, American family values were a bit different.
Typically in the US, when you turn 18, you are expected to graduate from high
school, move out, find a university, possibly find a partner, get married and
start a life together. Most of these decisions tak usually
you have to follow opportunity and wherever that will take you.
This is my family’s current
situation. I graduated from Bethel College in Indiana in 2010, and in order to
fulfill my financial responsibilities of paying off student loans, I moved to Washington State for my job with Experience Mission. Ideally my parents wanted me to come
home to South Texas, but that wasn’t where my opportunity took me.
Currently, my sister Jennifer
lives in Waco, Texas, about eight hours from my parents. My two younger
brothers also decided to go to college at Bethel and are away from my parents.
More than likely, when they graduate, they will probably not move back home to South Texas.
My parent never imagined that
their dream for a better future would separate our family this way.
Facebook has played a crucial(决定性的) role in the way we communicate while living in
different places. Since we all use Facebook, we have found a place to connect
and feel as if we were there together with each other.

the paragraph after the last?

Friends come to visit us in the evening, they spend
their time telling us they are in a hurry and looking at their watches. It
isn’t that our friends are all very busy, it is just that when we haven’t got a
television. People think that we are very strange. “But what do you do in the
evening?”,they
are always asking. The answer is very simple. Both my wife and I have hobbies(爱好). We certainly don’t spend our evenings staring at
the walls. My wife enjoys cooking and painting and often attends evening
classes in foreign languages. This is particularly useful as we often go abroad
for our holidays. I collect stamps and I’m always busy with my collection. Both
of us enjoy listening to the music and playing chess together.
Sometimes there are power cuts and we have no electricity in the house. This
does not worry us, we just light candles and carry on with what we were doing
before. Our friends, however, are lost---no television!---So they don’t know
what to do. On such evenings our house is very full ---they all come to us.

you like shopping? Or does the thought of wandering round the shops fill you
with terror? For some of us, shopping is an enjoyable way of spending our spare
time and our money. For me, it’s something I would rather avoid. Thank goodness
for the Internet! It’s more convenient to buy CDs, electrical items, and even
food from the comfort of your sofa. But that’s not the only reason: price is an
important factor. We can buy goods and services cheaper online. But sometimes
the problem is knowing what to buy. This has led to a type of shopping called
“showrooming”.
Showrooming is something I’ve done. I will go to a shop to see, touch and try
out products but then go home and buy them online at a knock-down price. I’m
not alone in doing this. Research by a company called Foolproof found 24% of
the people showroomed while Christmas shopping in 2013.
Cashman, Head of Technology at TNS UK, says the reasons for this new shopping
habit are that people are lacking time, lacking money and they want security
about the products they are buying. She explains that consumers are not only
shopping online at home but they are using the Internet in store or on their
smartphones to shop around.
But does this
mean technology will kill shops? Certainly shops will change. They will have to
offer more competitive prices or encourage people to buy more by giving
in-store discounts or free gifts.
We mustn’t
forget that buying in a shop means you can get expert advice from the sales
assistant and you can get good aftercare. It’s good to speak to a real human
rather than look at a faceless computer screen, but at least by showrooming,
you get the best of both worlds.
32. The two
questions in Paragraph 1 are raised to ________.
introduce the
topic&&&&&&&&&&&&&
B. give two examples
compare different opinions&&&&&& &D. get
answers from readers
33. What does
showrooming mean in the text?
Trying in shops and buying online&&&&& B. Showing
products in a room
Buying something in a store &&&&&&&&&&D.
Shopping on the Internet
34. According to
Amy Cashman, which is NOT the reason for showrooming?
The lack of
time&&&&&&&&&&&& &&B.
The comfort of the sofa
The lack of
money&&&&&&&&&&&&
D. The security of the product
35. What can be
inferred from Paragraph 4?
Online shops will disappear.
Free gifts will surely promote sales.
Shops need necessary changes.

back of a chair take on the shape of a wild animal. Out of the corner of my
eye, I saw the curtains(窗帘) seem to
move when there was no wind. A very low sound in the floor would seem a hundred
times louder than in the day. My imagination (想象) would run wild, and my heart would beat fast.
I would lie very still so that the &enemy(敌人) & would not discover me.
&&& Another of my childhood fears was that I would get lost,
especially on the way home from school. Every morning I got on the school bus
right near my home. That was no problem. After school, though, when all the
buses were lined up along the street, I was afraid that I would get in the
wrong one and be taken to some other strange places. On school or family trips
to a park or a museum, I wouldn't let the leaders out of my sight.
&&& Perhaps one of the worst fears of all I had as a child was
that of not being liked or accepted by others. Being popular was so important
to me then, and the fear of not being liked was a serious one.

Every month, Julia and
her cousins would go to visit their grandparents. They would be excited because
their grandfather would give them a few coins. Then they would buy toys or
sweets. The grandparents commented that, behaving like this, the children would
never learn to manage their money. So they planned a special test, in which the
children would have to show, over the course of a year, just what they could
manage to get with those few coins.
&& Some thought that they would save their money, but Ruben and Nico
continued spending it all on sweets. So they give up saving.
&&& Monty decided to manage his money by exchanging it: buying
and selling things, or betting (打赌) it with others. Soon he surprised the whole family. He had
accumulated (积聚) lots of
money. However, Monty was not very careful, and he got involved in more and
more risky deals. A few months later he became penniless after a losing bet.
Alex, had a will of iron. He saved the money and at the end of the year he had
collected more money than anyone. Even better, with so much money, he managed
to buy sweets at a reduced price, so that on the day of the competition he was
presented with enough sweets for much more than a year. And even then, he still
had enough left over for a toy. He was the clear winner, and other children
learned the advantages of knowing how to save and how to wait.
&&&& There was also Julia. Poor Julia didn’t enjoy the
competition, because even though she had had a wonderful secret plan, she had
spent her money without giving her plan enough time to work. However, she was

maybe change the expressions on her relatives’ faces, who had seemed to be
saying “What a poor girl shel is.&She couldn’t manage to save

This weekly four-day physical activity
schedule will get your kids excited about being active.
When the kids get home from school, don’t
let them go straight to the TV and get settled in. Encourage them to get moving
and get off the couch(沙发) by giving them a pedometer(计步器).
Pedometers are the most fun when parents also use one because that turns stepping,
walking and running into a game to see who can get the most steps.
The kids have done a great job so far
this week, but now they long for a little more TV time. Instead of turning on
cartoons, let them watch fitness movies made just for kids. These movies
encourage watchers to get up and dance along to kid-friendly music.
Get the whole family out of the house
together and over to a park. Bring lots of sports equipment, pack a healthy
picnic and have a family competitive sports day. Kids and adults get into
groups and play against each other in tennis, basketball or soccer. After
everyone has played hard for a couple of hours, stop for a picnic and then if
your family isn’t too tired, go back and play some more.
Every child loves to play video games and
there is no better time to allow kids to play them than on Sunday when no
homework is due. But don’t let them play a game that forces them to sit down
for hours. Dance games with a floor mat(垫子) to help kids follow the
dance moves are popular to kids.

My color television has given me nothing but a
headache. I was able to buy it a little over a year ago because I had my
relatives give me money for my birthday instead of a lot of clothes that
wouldn’t fit. I let a shop assistant fool me into buying a discontinued model.
I realized this a day later, when I saw newspaper advertisements for the set at
seventy-five dollars less than I had paid. The set worked so beautifully when I
first got it home that I would keep it on until stations&signed&off&for the night.
Fortunately, I didn’t get any channels showing all-night movies or I would never
have gotten to bed.
Then I started developing a problem with the set
that involved static(静电)noise. For
some reason, when certain shows switched into a commercial(商业广告), a loud
noise would sound for a few seconds. Gradually, this noise began to appear
during a show, and to get rid of it, I had to change to another channel and
then change it back. Sometimes this technique would not work, and I had to pick
up the set and shake it to remove the sound. I actually began to build up my
arm muscles(肌肉)shaking my set.
When neither of these methods removed the static
noise, I would sit helplessly and wait for the noise to go away. At last I
ended up hitting the set with my fist, and it stopped working altogether. My
trip to the repair shop cost me $62,and the set is working well now, but I keep
expecting more trouble.

Where do you
keep ice? In the freezer, of course. That’s what scientists might have thought
when they were looking for a safe place to store ice from mountain glaciers
from around the world. They’ve decided to store ice in Antarctica because
global warming is causing some of the glaciers in places like the Alps to melt.
Chappellaz of the French National Centre for Scientific Research is involved in
creating an ice vault (地下室) there. He
says: “We are probably the only scientific community whose sample (样本) is in danger of
disappearing from the face of the planet. If you work on rocks or on tree
rings, the raw material is still here and will be for many centuries.”
And why do
scientists need to study ice from the Alps, for example? Ice formed on the top
of a mountain is made of snow accumulated over thousands of years. Trapped air
bubbles (气泡) contain
samples of the atmosphere that existed when that ice was formed. Ice is a
record of climate. By examining ice, we know carbon dioxide in the atmosphere
is higher now than in the last three million years. Researchers use this kind
of data to build computer models and try to predict what might happen in the

We chat with our colleagues all the time: when we have
lunch, gossip in the tearoom, or leave work together.
Sharing your personal life brings you closer to your
co-workers and builds trust within your team. But revealing too much about
yourself to colleagues or managers can cause difficulties and even endanger
your work.
It’s vital to strike the right balance between getting
along with colleagues and keeping your privacy safe. “As a matter of fact, it
takes skills to communicate in the office. You can neither chat too much, nor
be too silent and shut yourself off from others,” said Yang Yudan, vice HR
director (人事经理) at
P&G. According to her, there are several safe topics to talk about with
colleagues during the break, such as weather or movies. Women like to talk
about makeup and clothing, while men are fond of sports and online games.
But discussing your private life, such as relationship,
habits or health conditions, is potentially risky. Cui Xia, 21, who has been
working for an IT company for only 2 months, learned this hard way when she
found out that everyone knew she had broken up with her boyfriend. “I spoke
about it with two colleagues in the tearoom and told my friend via phone, and
then the news spread.” And her boss finally heard about it and asked her not to
let it affect her work performance.
Sometimes revealing private matters in a thoughtless
manner can result in disastrous consequences. Liang Kun, 26, had to resign from
his job at a trading company last week after discussing his income with
colleagues during a lunch break. “I didn’t realize it was such a serious issue
until a senior member of staff went to find the boss, asking why I got a higher
salary than her,” said Liang. “Then our HR told me it’s forbidden to talk about
payments in the office.” HR expert Yang Yudan also reminds us that paychecks
are your own business. It’s unwise to share this information with others, no
matter how close you are.
To sum up, Yang Yudan advises office workers to be more
aware of their images when talking to colleagues. “When you share your personal
life, it will be recorded on your invisible resume (无形的简历) and may slow down your career
progression.”
