Lenovo's Flex 2 is a reasonably priced, capable 15-inch desktop-replacement laptop with a unique 300-degree folding display.
The Lenovo Flex 2 (15-inch) ($679.99, as tested) is a desktop-replacement
in every sense of the word. It is large, with a 15.6-inch touch screen, and offers plenty of connectivity and entertainment features, including a DVD drive. Due to its bulk and relatively short battery life, it's best placed on&a desk in your den or even on your kitchen counter. The Flex 2's&&plethora of features, including a unique 300-degree folding touch screen, good performance on our benchmark tests, and reasonable price help it to earn our&&Editors' Choice for entry-level desktop-replacement laptops.

Design and Features The screen&hinge is a little beefier than usual. It's a larger iteration of the hinge concept introduced last year with the . You can push the screen back past the 180-degree mark to around 300 degrees, allowing you to position the system with the screen facing out and the keyboard facing down on a table. This lets you use the Flex 2 in Stand mode, with the keyboard portion effectively acting as a stand for the touch screen.
The black-on-black chassis is fairly sturdy, with a horizontal-etched texture molded onto the palm rest and keyboard deck. The backlit keyboard has somewhat convex-curved keys that make typing comfortable, though there's a hint of flex. Touch typists will enjoy the full set of keys, as well as the built-in numeric keypad to the right. The one-piece touchpad is easy to use.
The focus of the interface is the 10-point touch screen. It responds quickly, and is clear and bright enough to view in a well-lit room. The 15.6-inch display has a 1,920-by-1,080 resolution, with much more virtual real estate than the 1,366-by-768-resolution screens on the Lenovo Flex 14, the , and the Acer . The 1080p HD videos I viewed during testing looked clear and detailed, and the screen gives you enough room for large spreadsheets or school-project layouts. Putting the screen into Stand mode is a boon for playing games and viewing movies. The Lenovo Recommends app's pops up when you switch from Laptop mode to Stand mode, with a list of programs that work well in each one.
The speaker volume is&strong, if a bit thin-sounding. It will certainly fill a midsize room with audio for movies and music that's light on bass. The sound from the speakers can be likened to a Las Vegas buffet: It's of adequate, but not superior quality and somewhat satisfying, plus there's a lot of it.
Ports are also plentiful, with an Ethernet port, an HDMI port, an SD card reader, a pair of USB 2.0 ports, and a single USB 3.0 port. The system has a DVD burner, so you can watch old movies or load older software. If you prefer to stream your movies and programs, you can do so via the 802.11b/g/n Wi-Fi.
All of this functionality adds girth, however: The Flex 2 (15-inch) is bulky compared with lithe 10-ounce tablets. This isn't as much of a drawback as it would be for an entry-level ultrabook like the , but the Flex 2's dimensions of 11 by 15 by 1.06 inches (HWD) and 5.56-pound weight make frequent travel a bit&uncomfortable. This is a system for homebodies.
The spacious 500GB hard drive has an 8GB solid-state drive (SSD) cache for performance. There's plenty of free space on the drive when you take it out of the box, but there are a few pre-installed programs worth noting. On the Start screen, you'll find Accuweather, eBay, Evernote, Hightail, Kindle, and Zinio. You'll also find Lenovo Phone Companion, which lets you pair an Android phone to the laptop to share contacts, pictures, messages, and the like. Budget about an hour to remove all the programs you don't want to use. The system comes with a one-year warranty.
Performance
Lenovo offers a&few configurations for the Flex 2, our review unit came with an Intel Core i5-4210U processor with Intel HD Graphics 4440, and&6GB of memory. Its PCMark 8 Work Conventional score of 2,683 points was near the top of its class of recently tested systems, outpacing the Acer Aspire M5-583P-6637, the Aspire V5-573PG-9610, and one of our top picks for&entry-level desktop-replacement laptops, the .
Multimedia tests scores were also strong, particularly for our Photoshop CS6 test (4 minutes 57 seconds), which is significantly faster than the Pentium-equipped Dell Latitude 13 and the Celeron-equipped . As you would expect from a laptop with integrated graphics, its 3D game frame rates were in the low teens and single digits. Then again, you wouldn't consider any laptop at the sub-$550 price point for hardcore gaming anyway. Altogether, these components make for a competent system that shouldn't feel slow for many years.
At this price point, some tradeoffs should be expected, and battery life is one of them. The Flex 2&lasted a meager&5 hours 30 minutes on our battery rundown test. The Dell Latitude 13 Education Series (3340) is our current battery champion for this category at 10:17. However, the Dell laptop has a larger battery, and its lower-powered processor favors battery life over performance, as shown by its middling scores on the multimedia tests.
With its affordable, under-$700&price&and&abundance of&handy features, including touch capability, the Lenovo Flex 2 succeeds in reaching the&sweet spot for a desktop-replacement laptop. Because of its size, you'll likely keep this system in a semi-permanent place (preferably near a power outlet), which means the relatively short battery life isn't that big of a deal. It's fast for&general and multimedia tasks, and is an effective entertainment PC, with its high-resolution display and DVD drive. The&Lenovo Flex 2 (15-inch) replaces the Dell Latitude 13 Education Series as our Editors' Choice for entry-level desktop-replacement laptops.
