Apprehensive about shopping for a ? Afraid you'll say the wrong thing to a
that will give him the upper hand in the price battle? Shopping for a new car, or even a used one, doesn't have to be that kind of nerve-jangling roll of the dice that it was many years ago.
For starters, the advent of the Internet allows car shoppers to go into battle armed with more information today than ever. Sites like
make it quite easy to get basic information that includes MSRP, features, options and reviews on any car you might have your eye on before you visit a car dealer, rather than having to trust the
to educate you.
With more car dealers out there now than ever before, consumers also now have more leverage. It's a common consumer tactic to play two car dealers off each other, or in
parlance, "cross-shopping," to see which one can give you the .
But it still helps to know what to say and what not to say as you and the car dealer play the game of haggling the price, because, you could still say the wrong thing to give the car dealer a leg up on the negotiations.
We spoke to an
car-buying expert and an auto dealer to find out what NOT to say once you're on a car dealer's turf and what TO say.
"Under no circumstances should you start talking about monthly payments," says John Nielson, Director of Auto Repair and Buying for AAA. "You should just focus on negotiating the purchase price. Once you start talking about monthly payments, everything gets confusing, because suddenly you don't know if that's the payment for 24 months, or 36 months, or how much of that would include interest charges if you're financing the purchase through the dealer."
Nielson's advice on this matter is supported by a sales representative at a Virginia , who agreed to speak to us on the condition of anonymity. "After all, I don't want to shoot myself in the foot," he says. So we'll call him Bill.
"Dealers will absolutely try to get you to negotiate monthly payments instead of purchase price, because we make more money if we do it that way," says Bill. "We'll say something like, 'I can get you into this car for $300 a month,' but we won't say how many months that's for. If we can get you to commit to a longer payment structure and we're doing the financing, we're making more money off you in interest payments."
Fundamentally, says Bill, " like to move money around. So it probably also is not in the buyer's best interest to mention right up front that he or she has a car they want to . Because once we know that, we know you're looking to get as much money as you can out of the trade-in."
Bill explains how getting more currency for your trade in can be a smokescreen that won't save you money in the end. "We'll assess the value of the car, and if it's worth, say, $15,000, we'll tell you we'll give you that amount," he says. "But once we do that, we'll be pretty hard to budge on the sale price of the car. So in that instance, you'll probably end up paying full MSRP for your new car."
Bill informs us, "These days, with CarMax being so prevalent, consumers might want to consider not trading their car in at all, and just selling it via CarMax. You will almost always get a better price for it if you sell it than what a dealer will give you in trade-in value."
Nielson of AAA has similar advice on this front, although he comes at it from a slightly different perspective. "It's OK to mention that you might want to trade your car in, because you don't want to get caught telling them something that isn't true. But just tell the sales rep, 'We'll talk about that later, let's just focus on the price of the new car for now'," says Nielson.
"Anytime you add the trade-in value for your existing car into the negotiation of the price for the new car, the numbers start moving back and forth, and you could end up being confused about how much you're really paying for the new car," warns Nielson. "The number one way consumers can go wrong in this scenario is to lose sight of the purchase price of the vehicle, which is the number you are in best position to negotiate."
Nielson laughs, "You probably also shouldn't tell them that you recently had a car repossessed, or that you have bad credit. That kind of information probably won't work in your favor."
And while it may be unwise to tell a dealer you're desperate for a car -- information that can bring out the shark in any sales rep -- there's nothing wrong with telling the car dealer that you're definitely looking to a
in the next few days. "Face it, dealers are trying to make a living," says Nielson. "So if they think you're just out kicking tires and are six months away from making a purchase, they might think you're wasting their time, so you won't get as much attention from them."
But back to the financing question: Bill reveals, "One tactic dealers sometimes take is getting the buyer lost in the numbers, by asking them, 'Where do you want to be? What's your budget?' And then once we know that, we start talking about financing through us, which is a way we make a lot of money on the back end of the deal.
That's why Nielson advises prospective car buyers, "Do your homework, find out what incentives are out there, and use a payment
you can find online so you're educated on how much car you can get into for the price you want to pay."
Also, it's best to get preapproved for a
before you even walk into the Thunderdome -- er, the dealer showroom. Bill says, "That way, if we know up front you're pre approved to get your financing elsewhere, we're not going to try and hit you with a high interest rate. That's what a lot of dealers will try to do without even knowing what your credit rating is."
One issue to factor in is whether or not you intend to pay cash. (If only all of us should be so lucky to have that kind of coin lying around.) If you do intend to pay cash, Bill tells us that's something you may not want to say right up front.
"When dealers are negotiating the purchase price, they anticipate making money on the back end, via financing," Bill explains. "So if you tell them up front you're paying cash, the dealer knows he has no opportunity to make money off you from financing. So, he might not be as moveable on purchase price if he already knows he isn't going to make any money off you from financing."
This likely holds true if you've been preapproved for financing. It's best not to reveal your hand on the outset that you don't plan to use dealer financing before you negotiate the vehicle price.
It's not necessarily bad form for the buyer to tell the car dealer up front that he's strongly considering financing the car through the dealer -- and then, later, saying, "I changed my mind," after negotiating the purchase price.
"The buyer CAN get a better deal if he does that," concedes Bill, "because all along, in that scenario, the dealer is maybe knocking something off of the top of the purchase price thinking he's going to get some interest out of you on the financing."
Finally, confirms Bill, "It's OK to say you've been to other dealers, because cross-shopping between two dealers is always a good idea. From the dealer standpoint, customer service is what separates one dealership from another dealer who sells the same brand. Some customers are willing to pay more money if they were treated right during the purchase process, because that's a pretty good indicator that you'll also be treated right later on, when you come back to have your car serviced or ."

Who Is Satan?: What Does the Bible Say About the Devil?
Introduction
Who is Satan?
Satan or the Devil is often portrayed as some guy
in a red suit with horns, a pitchfork, and a tail. This cartoon-like
caricature is often mocked as being made up. Is this what Satan looks
like? Is he real?
According to the Barna Group, the majority of Christians do not believe that
Satan or the devil actually exists. However,
according to an AP-AOL news poll, up to 97% of evangelical Christians believe
that angels exist. Contrary to the beliefs of
many, Satan is not the opposite of God&an anti-god. According to the Bible,
Satan is a created being, having been created by God as His most powerful
angelic helper. So, Satan is an angel who rebelled against God.
Who is Satan?
The Bible says that Satan was created by God as a cherub, the most
powerful of God's angelic beings. Some time
after his creation and before the creation of mankind, Satan rebelled against
God and took one third of the angels (now referred to as demons) with him
into rebellion.
What does Satan look like?
No, Satan does not look like the cartoon character in the red suit with a
tail and horns and a pitchfork. Contrary to the beliefs of
Barak Obama is not Satan. Angels, including Satan,
don't have male or female characteristics in their heavenly state (which Jesus
told us through His teaching). However, when
they come to earth, they can take on human form. In the Bible, all angels
who take on human form appear as males. All biblical references address Satan by
the personal pronoun &he.&
However, in their heavenly state according to the Bible, a cherub is a large
creature&up to 18 feet in height with 8
foot long wings. In the prophet Ezekiel's
vision, the cherubim (plural of &cherub&) had four wings.
Under their wings were human-like hands that could could be used to carry
things. All the surfaces of the cherubim,
including the wings, were covered with eyes.
Each cherub had four faces, one &of a cherub, the second the face of a man,
the third the face of a lion, and the fourth the face of an eagle.&
The New Testament book of Revelation describes similar creatures, only with
six wings each, with faces of a lion, an ox, a man, and an eagle.
So, these creatures look nothing like the cute little cherubim you can buy
for your garden or bookshelf. Satan himself is described as being &perfect
in beauty,& being adorned with all kinds of precious stones.
The fall of Satan
Satan was created as a perfect being. He is described as originally being
wise and completely righteous. However, pride caused Satan to fall, (&your heart was lifted up because of your
since he wanted to receive the worship due to God
At that point there was rebellion in , when Satan convinced one third
of the angels to rebel against God. Michael, an
archangel of God, fought with
God's angels against Satan and his angels, with Satan losing the battle and
being cast from
down to earth.
It isn't certain when Satan rebelled against God, but a passage from the book
of Job (Job 38:4-7) suggests it occurred between the creation of the earth and the
creation of Adam and Eve. In describing the creation of the earth to Job and
his friends, God said that &all the sons of God shouted for joy.&
Presumably, &all the sons of God& would have included Satan as well,
suggesting he hadn't rebelled at the point the earth was created.
However, Satan wasn't finished in his rebellion against God. Satan took on the form of a snake in the garden of Eden to tempt
He managed to convince Eve that God's instructions against eating from the
were done as a way of keeping
something good from her. She believed Satan's lie that she would &become
like God.& We don't know where
, but he followed his wife's lead and also
disobeyed God's instructions.
Satan's continued rebellion
&Satan continues in his rebellion today, since he hates God and His plans. He wants
people to worship him and follow his evil ways. He opposes &God who took on the form of a man
to redeem humanity from their sin, and restore
their relationship with Him.
A comparison between Jesus and Satan is given in the table below.

Satan's ultimate fate
The Bible says that Satan will continue in his rebellion against God until
the very end. Near the end, a &beast& (world ruler) will arise from
the &sea& (the
gentile nations), having been given power by Satan to perform signs and wonders
for the world. In addition, a false prophet, a
religious leader empowered by Satan will deceive people into worshipping him.
The beast and the false prophet will convince the leaders of the earth to follow
them into war against God and His people.
However, the armies of the leaders of the world will be destroyed at the battle
of Armageddon and the beast and false prophet will be thrown into the Lake of
Fire. At this point, Satan will be locked up for
1,000 years, while
rules the earth
with His saints. At the end of that period,
Satan is released for a short period of time, deceives the leaders of the world
again, and convinces them to attack Jesus and His rule on the earth.
The battle is short as fire from heaven consumes the rebels. Satan is then
thrown into the Lake of Fire () to &be tormented day and night for ever and ever.&
Following Satan's demise, the saints of
will judge the angels who
joined him in rebellion.
Overcoming Satan
The apostle John says that believers can overcome Satan when &the word of God
abides in you.& When Jesus was
tempted by Satan, He cited scripture to him (Matthew 4:1-10). In addition, Paul
tells us that the sword of the spirit, which is the word of God, is our only
offensive weapon against the Satan (Ephesians 6:13-17). In the parable of the sower,
Jesus said that there were those who heard the word of God, but failed to take
it in, and so were led astray by the devil (the seed that fell by the side of
the road). So Christians resist the devil by
knowing and memorizing scripture so that we cannot be deceived by the lies of
Satan. The Bible gives believers
the following instructions about resisting the devil:
Submit therefore to God. Resist the devil and he will flee from you. (James
&In your anger do not sin&: Do not let the sun go down while you are
still angry, and do not give the devil a foothold. (Ephesians 4:26-27)
In addition to all this, take up the shield of faith, with which you can
extinguish all the flaming arrows of the evil one. (Ephesians 6:16)
Be of sober spirit, be on the alert. Your adversary, the devil, prowls around
like a roaring lion, seeking someone to devour. But resist him, firm in your
faith, knowing that the same experiences of suffering are being accomplished by
your brethren who are in the world. (1 Peter 5:8-9)
Conclusion
Satan is often comically portrayed as a guy in a red devil suit. He probably
likes it this way, since most people (including Christians) are apt to
disbelieve in his existence. As a &non-existent& force in people's lives, Satan
is free to influence them without being discovered as the cause of many of their
problems. However, the Bible says that Satan is a beautiful and powerful fallen
angel, who would like to do nothing more than take away the joy of Christians
through deception, and lead people into rebellion against God. Although Satan is
destined for the Lake of Fire, biblical prophecy indicates that he will deceive
entire nations and kingdoms before he is relegated to , along
with the other fallen angels he led into rebellion against God.
Jesus replied, &I saw Satan fall like lightning from
heaven. I have given you authority to trample on snakes and scorpions and to
overcome all th nothing will harm you. However, do not
rejoice that the spirits submit to you, but rejoice that your names are
written in heaven.& (Luke 10:18-20)

were identical in size and shape. The height of each cherub was ten cubits.
He placed the cherubim inside the innermost room of the temple, with their

equality with God a thing to be grasped, but emptied Himself, taking the form of
a bond-servant, and being made in the likeness of men. Being found in appearance
as a man, He humbled Himself by becoming obedient to the point of death, even
death on a cross. For this reason also, God highly exalted Him, and bestowed on
Him the name which is above every name, so that at the name of Jesus EVERY KNEE

your sake, in order that Satan might not outwit us. For we are not unaware
of his schemes. (2 Corinthians 2:10-11)

heaven but is earthly, unspiritual, of the devil. (James 3:14-15)
The coming of the lawless one will be in accordance with the work of
Satan displayed in all kinds of counterfeit miracles, signs and wonders, and
in every sort of evil that deceives those who are perishing. They perish
because they refused to love the truth and so be saved. (2 Thessalonians

or persecution, or famine, or nakedness, or peril, or sword? (Romans 8:35)
For I am convinced that neither death, nor life, nor angels, nor

from the love of God, which is in Christ Jesus our Lord. (Romans 8:38-39)

Retain the standard of sound words which you have heard from me, in the
faith and love which are in Christ Jesus. (2 Timothy 1:13)
This is how we know who the children of God are and who the children of
the devil are: Anyone who does not do what is right is not a child of G
nor is anyone who does not love his brother. (1 John 3:10)
But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness,
goodness, faithfulness, gentleness and self-control. Against such things
there is no law. (Galatians 5:22-23)
The acts of the sinful nature are obvious: sexual immorality, impurity
ido hatred, discord, jealousy, fits of
rage, selfish ambition, dissensions, drunkenness, orgies,
and the like. I warn you, as I did before, that those who live like this
will not inherit the kingdom of God. (Galatians 5:19-21)

As for you, you were dead in your transgressions and sins, in which you
used to live when you followed the ways of this world and of the ruler of
the kingdom of the air, the spirit who is now at work in those who are
disobedient. (Ephesians 2:1-2)
He who does what is sinful is of the devil, because the devil has been
sinning from the beginning. The reason the Son of God appeared was to
destroy the devil's work. (1 John 3:8)

My word, then you are truly disciples of M and you will know the truth,
and the truth will make you free.& They answered Him, &We are Abraham's
descendants and have never yet bee how is it that You
say, 'You will become free'?& Jesus answered them, &Truly, truly, I say to
you, everyone who commits sin is the slave of sin. The slave does not remain

free, you will be free indeed.& (John 8:31-36)

has taken them captive to do his will. (2 Timothy 2:25-26)
how God anointed Jesus of Nazareth with the Holy Spirit and power, and

Then should not this woman, a daughter of Abraham, whom Satan has kept
bound for eighteen long years, be set free on the Sabbath day from what
bound her?& (Luke 13:16)
And the dragon stood on the sand of the seashore. Then I saw a beast
coming up out of the sea, having ten horns and seven heads, and on his horns
were ten diadems, and on his heads were blasphemous names. And the beast
which I saw was like a leopard, and his feet were like those of a bear, and
his mouth like the mouth of a lion. And the dragon gave him his power and
his throne and great authority. I saw one of his heads as if it had been
slain, and his fatal wound was healed. And the whole earth was amazed and
foll they worshiped the dragon because he gave his
au and they worshiped the beast, saying, &Who is like
the beast, and who is able to wage war with him?& There was given to him a
mouth speaking arrogant words and blasphemies, and authority to act for
forty-two months was given to him. (Revelation 13:1-5)
And I saw coming out of the mouth of the dragon and out of the mouth of the
beast and out of the mouth of the false prophet, three unclean spirits like
for they are spirits of demons, performing signs, which go out to the
kings of the whole world, to gather them together for the war of the great
day of God, the Almighty. (Revelation 16:13-14)
And I saw the beast and the kings of the earth and their armies assembled
to make war against Him who sat on the horse and against His army.
(Revelation 19:19)
And the beast was seized, and with him the false prophet who performed
the signs in his presence, by which he deceived those who had received the
mark of the beast and those who these two were thrown
alive into the lake of fire which burns with brimstone. (Revelation 19:20)
He seized the dragon, that ancient serpent, who is the devil, or Satan,
and bound him for a thousand years. He threw him into the Abyss, and locked
and sealed it over him, to keep him from deceiving the nations anymore until
the thousand years were ended. After that, he must be set free for a short
time. (Revelation 20:2-3)
Then I saw thrones, and they sat on them, and judgment was given to
them. And I saw the souls of those who had been beheaded because of their
testimony of Jesus and because of the word of God, and those who had not
worshiped the beast or his image, and had not received the mark on their
forehe and they came to life and reigned with Christ
for a thousand years. (Revelation 20:4)
When the thousand years are over, Satan will be released from his prison
and will go out to deceive the nations in the four corners of the earth--Gog
and Magog--to gather them for battle. In number they are like the sand on
the seashore. They marched across the breadth of the earth and surrounded
the camp of God's people, the city he loves. But fire came down from heaven
and devoured them. And the devil, who deceived them, was thrown into the
lake of burning sulfur, where the beast and the false prophet had been
thrown. They will be tormented day and night for ever and ever. (Revelation
Do you not know that the saints will judge the world? And if you are to
judge the world, are you not competent to judge trivial cases? Do you not
know that we will judge angels? How much more the things of this life! (1
Corinthians 6:2-3)
I have written to you, fathers, because you know Him who
has been from the beginning. I have written to you, young men, because you
are strong, and the word of God abides in you, and you have overcome the
evil one. (1 John 2:14)
Then Jesus was led up by the Spirit into the wilderness
to be tempted by the devil. And after He had fasted forty days and forty
nights, He then became hungry. And the tempter came and said to Him, &If You
are the Son of God, command that these stones become bread.& But He answered
and said, &It is written, 'MAN SHALL NOT LIVE ON BREAD
ALONE, BUT ON EVERY WORD THAT PROCEEDS OUT OF THE MOUTH OF GOD.'&
Then the devil took Him into the holy city and had Him stand on the pinnacle
of the temple, and said to Him, &If You are the Son of God, throw Yourself
for it is written, 'HE WILL COMMAND HIS ANGELS CONCERNING YOU'; and
'ON their HANDS THEY WILL BEAR YOU UP,
SO THAT YOU WILL NOT STRIKE YOUR FOOT AGAINST A STONE.'& Jesus said to him,
&On the other hand, it is written, 'YOU SHALL NOT PUT
THE LORD YOUR GOD TO THE TEST.'& Again, the devil took Him to a very
high mountain and showed Him all the kingdoms of the w
and he said to Him, &All these things I will give You, if You fall down and
worship me.& Then Jesus said to him, &Go, Satan! For
it is written, 'YOU SHALL WORSHIP THE LORD YOUR GOD, AND SERVE HIM ONLY.'&
Then the devil left H and behold, angels came and
began to minister to Him. (Matthew 1:1-11)
Put on the full armor of God, so that you will be able to stand firm against
the schemes of the devil. For our struggle is not against flesh and blood, but
against the rulers, against the powers, against the world forces of this
darkness, against the spiritual forces of wickedness in the heavenly places.
Therefore, take up the full armor of God, so that you will be able to resist in
the evil day, and having done everything, to stand firm. Stand firm therefore,
HAVING GIRDED YOUR LOINS WITH TRUTH, and HAVING PUT ON THE BREASTPLATE OF
RIGHTEOUSNESS, and having shod YOUR FEET WITH THE PREPARATION OF THE GOSPEL OF
PEACE; in addition to all, taking up the shield of faith with which you will be
able to extinguish all the flaming arrows of the evil one. And take THE HELMET
OF SALVATION, and the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God. (Ephesians
&When anyone hears the word of the kingdom and does not understand it, the
evil one comes and snatches away what has been sown in his heart. This is the
one on whom seed was sown beside the road.& (Matthew 13:19)
