A Huanghai DDm (36 ft.) single-door, diesel-powered, single-door, air-conditioning suburban busLike a number of Bafangda bus models purchased before 2006, Huanghai DD6113K03 comes in three versions. By opening one or two doors and raising the main floor to two different heights, the same body frame develops into two variants, a city bus and a suburban bus. The suburban bus variant are equipped with either HVAC or merely heating system.DD6113K03's joined Bafangda fleet mainly in 2004, carrying the mission of succeeding the heavily worn-out Yaxing medium-duty buses and Huanghai heavy-duty buses. Foreseeing the emission control that would be strengthened for the 2008 Olympic Games, these buses are the among the earliest Bafangda buses that are equipped with Euro III diesel engines. Due to the unique look, reliable quality and large number in service, DD6113K03 becomes an iconic Bafangda bus model.The overall exterior design favors curved surfaces and round-edged components. A smiling face consists of mouth (the license plate recess), nose (Huanghai logo) and willow-leaf eyes (headlamps). Some bus ethusiasts even abstract the fog lamps to tiny paws put on the face and consequently the front facet turns into the image of a cute cartoon character. The headlamps are with considerable universality: Golden Dragon XML6118E1G, Jinling JLY and a lot of other buses and coaches are also fitted with the same headlamps. The bus lacks the front information window that is integrated between the interior tri instead, an alternative information display board is attached to the ceiling.The bus is built on the DD6113K03 chassis, where the same chassis model suggesting that the chassis and the body are the best match. Power comes from a Cummins ISBe220 31 5.9L 220hp Euro III diesel-engine which can still be found on many much newer buses. The manufacturer of the 5-forward-speed manual transmission is unknown, but an educated guess should be Qijiang. Both axles, manufacturer still unknown, features spring-leaf suspension. Front wheels are possibly equipped with disc brake.The suburban bus version has a three-step, 900mm (35.4 in.) main floor from ground and an one-step higher rear deck. However all seats except the last row are on the same level, due to the seat platform which is raised from the main floor to make space for the underfloor luggage cabin. The front door is a single-leaf, inward-swinging door with full-size glass shield. Seats are the Bafangda's standard cushioned seats with blue seat cover and white headrest cover. Priority seats are in yellow cover and conductor's seat is in green. The 11m bus accomodates 51 passengers (including conductor) and interior is fairly crowded. Interior trim is simple but robust, omitting any excessive panels or edge coverings. All side windows are inlaid into plastic frames and each window features two pieces of fully slidable glass. Although the windows guarantee ventilation during springs and autumns and relieve some passengers' bus-sickness, they also contributes to significant loss in air-tightness and annoying noise on bumpy roads. Underfloor luggage cabin is not spacious, but is generally sufficient for the regular suburban service. The luggage cabin doors, three on each side, are swinging type while most newer buses have them replaced by upward sliding type (pantograph hinged), usually with automatic pneumatic operation.Upon initial delivery, the refreshing DD6113K03's were dispatched onto very heavily used lines like 915, 916, 938, 980, etc. and became dominant in numerous highways and main rural roads. However as large batches of Euro II emission buses, such as YBL6985, BK6980B1, DD6112K19, exited service, a large number of DD6113K03's were drawn off their original routes and sent to less important cross-urban routes and suburban routes in order to succeed the retired buses. Most DD6113K03's have received mid-of-life overhaul, having extensive refurbishment of body, chassis and passenger cabin. The 11.00R20 tube tires are all replaced by 11R22.5 tubeless. Originally the door's framework and the portion under the first window were painted in accordance with the wide-stripe pattern that extended from th however during mid-of-life overhaul, the door's framework turned entirely white and the white triangle under the first window was filled with lime-green. Technical deterioration due to daily wear does not allow the aging DD6113K03's to have too many years of active service, yet the simple but robust old Huanghai will still steadfastly strive to take everyone aboard safely and rapidly to his or her destination.Shown in the picture is Fleet No. 065180, operated by Huairou Division on Workers' Pioneer Bus Line 916 from Dongzhimen Hub Station to Huairou (Bus Station). The downtown coach is travelling its last segment of route heading for the unloading stop outside Dongzhimen Hub Station in a peaceful weekend afternoon. Huairou is an outlying suburban district located in northern Beijing, to the north of suburban districts Changping and Shunyi, and between the outlying suburban counties Yanqing in the northwest and Miyun in the northeast. The uptown final stop of Line 916 and its express variant 916 Express, Huairou Bus Station, sits to the west of Huairou Town, also the home to the district hall of Huairou. Like most Bafangda buses that head out from Dongzhimen, Line 916 local goes onto Jingmi (urban Beijing - Miyun) Road all the way up to Huairou Town, with a short detour off Jingmi Road at Niulanshan. The uptown single trip is 57.5km
(35.7 mi.) long and serves 38 stops. Although Huairou to urban direct service is mainly undertaken by Line 916 Express which uses Jingcheng (Beijing-Chengde, Hebei) Highway and stops only in urban Beijing and inside Huairou Town, Line 916 local is vital for residents along the busy Jingmi Road.
