The Iron Lady, review:
Meryl Streep's performance in The Iron Lady is astonishing, writes Robbie Collin.
&One of the great problems of our age is that we&re governed by people who care more about feelings than they do about thoughts and ideas,& says Margaret Thatcher in The Iron Lady. &Now, thoughts and ideas & that&s what interests me.& It&s a pivotal line in director Phyllida Lloyd and screenwriter Abi Morgan&s absorbing, exhilarating biopic of the United Kingdom&s only female prime minister, but the film itself doesn&t agree. The Iron Lady does not pick over thoughts and ideas for an hour and 45 minutes: Lloyd and Morgan are fascinated by who their subject was and is, and rather less by what she stood, and continues to stand for. Personality politics might have been anathema to Margaret Thatcher MP, but this film is propelled by the sheer power of her presence.
It begins with a playful shot of a bottle of milk being taken & perhaps snatched & from the shelf of a London corner shop. The elderly Lady Thatcher (Meryl Streep) has left her ho fumbling for change in her handbag, she seems like an exile from another era. Over breakfast, we see her talking to her husband Denis (Jim Broadbent) & except Denis died in 2003. A muddled conversation with a young aide about a concert takes her back to a theatre trip at which a young Denis (Harry Lloyd, every bit as charming here as he was as Herbert Pocket in the recent Great Expectations serialisation) playfully presented her with a sugar mouse. The film&s structure is confused, but deliberately so: events in Lady Thatcher&s present trigger vivid memories of her past. Shaping a plot around a real person&s mental decline sounds heartless, but here it&s been done compassionately, and in a way that makes narrative sense. The film has six decades of history to get through, from the Falklands War to the Poll Tax riots and the Grand Hotel bombing & better this than the kind of 'Twenty Most Important Political Moments& checklist format that hampered Oliver Stone&s recent George W. Bush biopic.
The present-day scenes also serve as a vital coda to one of The Iron Lady&s central threads: the personal cost of power. Lloyd and Morgan want us to appreciate just how much this grocer&s daughter from Grantham had at stake when she entered the overwhelmingly stuffy, overwhelmingly male world of British politics. When Thatcher arrives at the House of Commons for the first time after being elected MP for Finchley in 1959, there&s a telling shot of her distinctive blue hat bobbing alone in a sea of half-bald heads. When a Labour member sneers that she &doth screech too much& following a Commons speech, she responds by employing a voice coach, leading to a stagy 'training montage& in which Thatcher&s vowels and hairstyle are given a bouffant boost under the eye of Gordon Reece (Roger Allam). There&s a glimpse of camp humour here that seems to have been toned down elsewhere in the film: a line from the trailer, in which Thatcher asks a dining room full of European dignitaries &Gentlemen, shall we join the ladies?& has been lost in the edit.
Perhaps Lloyd was worried that her film had to be serious enough & she is, after all, the director whose only previous film is the &400 million-grossing, pro-celebrity karaoke tournament Mamma Mia. To say The Iron Lady is better-directed than Mamma Mia isn&t much of a compliment, but it&s true, and a few clunky images aside (a close-up of Thatcher&s feet treading on fallen rose petals as she leaves Downing Street is a stupid person&s idea of a clever shot), the film moves fluidly and feels polished and authentically cinematic.
But then, perhaps I&ve just been dazzled by Streep. In a career full of great performances, this is surely one of her greatest: the changes in her voice and posture as she moves from youthful, fire-bellied politician to elderly stateswoman develop so smoothly, you could plot them on a bell curve. As time passes, her voice slows and deepens, the corners of her mouth and eyes turn down, her walk loses speed but not purpose. Extraordinarily, at both screenings of The Iron Lady I&ve attended, an audience member has started heckling Streep as if she actually is Thatcher, and while this says something about the hecklers, it says just as much about the quality and accuracy of her work.
Awards season glory for Streep is a given, but the rest of the cast are hardly slacking: Broadbent add Olivia Colman is an unobtrusive delight as Carol Thatcher (her brother Mark appears only as a child and on the other end of a long-distance phone call); Alexandra Roach plays the young Margaret Thatcher wit and as Geoffrey Howe, Anthony Head can be sensationally dead-sheep-like when it counts.
Some viewers may be disappointed that a Thatcher biopic lacks an explicit political agenda, but the film succeeds as a drama for that very reason. Lloyd and Morgan have no intention of immortalising their subject: in fact, they do just the opposite, which those with an axe to grind will find even less palatable. They make her fully human.

Today, I have read a book named Christmas Carol. The main character didn’t believe in Christmas and was selfish and cruel to other people. However, after the tree ghosts came and brought him to the past, present and the future, he suddenly understood what share means.
Actually, I have the same experience with him, except the selfishneand cruelness. I don’t believe in Christmas as well, even though a lot of people keep telling me about it. In my mind, Christmas is a kind of belief, which can help people when they are harsh situation. However, if I have time to believe in Charismas, I prefer to work harder. Remember that never rely on the others, especially that unrealistic belief which is a kind of illusion.
2.This story represents a very original forces, the bois very stingy done in a Christmas dream, then he changed his views and see how to use their money to help others, charity! I hate that mean the original owner, since he has so much money, but not always help others. Although money is very important, to live in this world money is totally unacceptable and if the money can live a life on, let the world, more people happy, they should spend the money to, because it values. Fortunately, the bowake up later, the others will be happy to know the truth themselves happy to help a disabled child, for their family and their assistants together after a happy Christmas!。

The illusion that Gatsby revived an old dream has gone for ever. The author composes a chilly and disappointed sad melody with the multicoloured note, leave somebody limitless thinking. I have got a lot of interesting scientific knowledge from the books of National Geographic Reading Expeditions, some of which are about life, physics. I really can’t help losing myself in the colorful pictures and clear words in the books. After reading the books, I have been considering a question: What if we lived without science?&&&& Great changes have taken place in the world with the help of science. In the past, life was nasty, brutish and short. It is hard to imagine how our forefathers could do without so many conveniences that modern science brings about. Back then, only a small group of people enjoyed the very few comforts. But the majority of people didn’t even have sufficient food, let along their privilege to be educated. Anyway, it is science that changes the world and makes people’s life better and better, although it also leads to some bad aspects at the same time. From the discovery of the gravity to the first step on the moon, we human beings have experienced a long process of developing science. And now, this process is still continuing much faster. New organisms are already being engineered, and new genetically modified crops promise benefits from higher yields and less use of harmful chemicals and so on. A lot of examples are showing this point. In the future, changes are likely to be even much greater as science reaches out to shape life itself. Maybe one day, the possibility that life existed on Mars billions of years ago will be potentially one of the greatest discoveries of our time. It is the force of the competition, we human beings’ inquiring mind and initiative that bring about the non-stopped development of science. Therefore, it is difficult and impossible to prevent science from changing the world and our life as well. At present, we are in two minds about science. On the one hand, we are enjoying the sweet life as a result of the evelopment of science, and expect it to continue. And we are showing our interests into some scientific expeditions, such as the astronomy, the alien civilization, etc. On the other hand, we are distrustful of it, due to the lack of understanding of science. Some people thus far are still very superstitious, and they would even believe in superstitions rather than believe in science. Stephen Hawking, one of the most remarkable scientists in the world, once said, “In a democratic society, the public needs to have a basic understanding of the science, so that it can make informed decisions and not leave them in the hands of experts.” This has reminded me of Professor Alan G. MacDiarmid from America, the person who got the Nobel Prize for chemistry in the year of XX. In his lecture at Peking University this year, he put forward that science is people. He also expounded the importance of the basic science for the public. Evidently, every one of us does need science, or we can’t live without it. Now that everyone needs science, why not take advantage of some means to give the public the right basic scientific knowledge? So when they face the problems such as acid rain, the greenhouse effect, nuclear weapons, environment destruction and some other problems, they can also make informed decisions on these subjects, just as what Hawking said. One aspect relies on what is taught in schools. But science is often taught in an uninteresting way and most students just learn it by rote to pass examinations. However, the final goal of learning science is not to pass examinations or t instead, we should try to make full use of it to change our world and life. While learning, we should try to ask more questions and we should have the courage of suspecting the knowledge in the books, as some of the scientific conclusions are likely to be corrected in the future. Who knows. So not only must we change our attitude towards science, but also the way of teaching and learning science. In addition, science is always changing at a fast rate, and who we learn at school isn’t that sufficient to last a lifetime. So the mass media including TV, radio, newspaper, magazine and publishing company will play an important role in reporting the latest science in time. Moreover, the mass media can also popularize basic science to the public, because only in this way will more people realize what on earth science is. “Scientists and engineers tend to express their ideas in the form of equations because they need to know the precise values of quantities. But for the rest of us, a qualitative grasp of scientific concepts is sufficient, and this can be conveyed by words and diagrams, without the use of equations”, said Stephen Hawking. I agree with him very much, and, I’m fond of the wonderful words above, from Stephen Hawking. For the development of science, are you ready? I've just fininshed reading the first 4 Harry Potter books for about the 5th time through, and they're just as magical and affecting as they have ever been. Everything is in here: suspense, adventure, mystery, humour, danger. There's even some pretty satisfying paybacks. The characters are fantastic and fantastically realistic. There are bad people who turn out to be good guys and good people who turn out to be bad guys, just like life. I think the thing I like best about these books is the message that it's okay to be different - to be not "normal." I would love for everyone in school to have hear that message. It would probably reduce the bullying around the school. These books value real thoughts. Much has been made of Harry's rule breaking, but only once in the series so far does he break a rule for arbitrary personal gain. Most of the time he makes a decision that what's right is more important than what's written. And you know what? Life's like that sometimes. I think it's great that kids are getting an example of how to do what's right even when it involves breaking rules. The Potter books also show that there are consequences for rule breaking. If not getting caught and getting a detention, then a spell going wrong and someone getting turned into a cat. This shows that when you make a decision to go against the rules that things may not go as you expected and you have to take responsibility for the outcome. Sense and Sensibility was the first Jane Austen published. Though she initially called it Elinor and Marianne, Austen jettisoned both the title and the epistolary mode in which it was originally written, but kept the essential theme: the necessity of finding a workable middle ground between passion and reason. The story revolves around the Dashwood sisters, Elinor and Marianne. Whereas the former is a sensible, rational creature, her younger sister is wildly romantic--a characteristic that offers Austen plenty of scope for both satire and compassion. Commenting on Edward Ferrars, a potential suitor for Elinor's hand, Marianne admits that while she "loves him tenderly," she finds him disappointing as a possible lover for her sister. Soon however, Marianne meets a man who measures up to her ideal: Mr. Willoughby, a new neighbor. So swept away by passion is Marianne that her behavior begins to border on the scandalous. Then Wil meanwhile, Elinor's growing affection for Edward suffers a check when he admits he is secretly engaged to a childhood sweetheart. How each of the sisters reacts to their romantic misfortunes, and the lessons they draw before coming finally to the requisite happy ending forms the heart of the novel. Though Marianne's disregard for social conventions and willingness to consider the world well-lost for love may appeal to modern readers, it is Elinor whom Austen herself mo a truly happy marriage, she shows us, exists only where sense and sensibility meet and mix in proper measure. Before I read this book, I had watched a cartoon movie made by Japan. So I have a strong interest on it. It all begins i The Christmas Season. The coldest one of all, were the war has made fuel for heating very scarce. While her husband is off at war, Marmee is left alone to raise their four daughters: Jo, Meg, Beth, and Amy. On Christmas Eve, Marmee has just arrived home from passing out food to the less fortunate with a letter from her husband, the girls' father. The all gather together around the fire to read the letter. Afterwards, the girls are teary eyed. Marmee kisses them and they are off to bed. Jo is longing to become a writer. So, every night she stays up late writing the script for soap operas. As morning comes she is the last one awake. The table is set, and food prepared for their Christmas feast. As dusk falls, the girls are all up in the attic acting out Jo's play, which she reads from the local (fake) newspaper. As they are performing, their rich, next-door neighbors grandson watches from the window. The 2 oldest girls: Jo and Meg, get ready to attend the Christmas Ball. While Jo is curling Meg's hair, there is a strange smell to the air. Amy screams, Megs hair is being singed. ()They continue digging through the old clothes bin for a pair of white gloves. One of the prominent themes in Little Women is the coming of age or maturation of the girls. During the course of the novel we see them grow in many ways -- physically, intellectually, and especially emotionally. One question which readers must ask themselves is whether the views the characters have on the coming of age process are shared by Alcott. If they aren't, what are Alcott's views and how do they differ from those of the women in her story? It is interesting to examine the last half of Chapter 20, "Confidential." Jo addresses the maturation issue as she speaks with Marmee of the situation between Meg and Mr. Brooke. The possible love between these two represents one of the very important aspects in coming of age for a teenage girl. Jo treats this natural process as if it were some sort of disease, however. Jo cannot understand why Meg would want to stop behaving "like a sensible creature" (p.202), and refers to love as "such nonsense."
