How could we
tell time if there were no watches or clocks anywhere in the world?
The sun was probably the world's first &clock&,
except in the far north, where the Eskimos (爱斯基摩人) live. There, it's dark most of the winter, and light most of the
summer. But in most of the world, people have used the sun for a clock. Even
today, if you don't have a clock, you still know that when the sun shines, it's
day, and when it's dark, it's night. The sun can also tell you if it's morning,
noon, or afternoon.
People who live near
the sea can tell time from the tides. In the daytime, for about six
hours, the water rises higher and higher on the beach. And then it goes down
and down for about six hours. The same thing happens again at night. There are
two high tides and two low tides every 24 hours.
Seamen on a ship learn how to tell time by looking at the moon
and the stars. The whole sky is their clock.
In some places in
the world the wind comes up at about the same time every day or changes
direction or stops blowing. In these places the wind can be the clock.
A sand clock is an even better clock. If you had fine dry
sand in a glass shaped like the one in the picture, you would have what is
called an hourglass. The sand in the hourglass goes from the top part to the
bottom part in exactly one hour. When the hourglass is turned over, the sand
will take another hour to go back again.
) 1. According to the passage, there are
______ ways to tell time besides the clock and watch.

use the sun for a clock because ______.
know very little about the sun

We all love new inventions. They are
exciting, amazing and can even change our lives.
But have all these developments really
improved the quality of our lives?
Picture this: You’re rushing to finish your homework on the computer.
Your mobile phone rings, a QQ message from your friend appears on the screen,

Inventions have speeded up our lives so

people who live far away from noisy cities, who have no telephones, no cars, not even any

Our family in the UK went “back in time” to see what
life was like without all the inventions we have today. The grandparents, with their

The grandmother, Lyn, said, “It was hard physically, but not mentally.” She believed life was less materialistic(物质的). “The more things you have,

was less to fight over, such as their computer. Also Lyn changed from being a “fashionable, beer-drinking granny, to one who cooked

China is a nation of
etiquette(礼仪). Chinese people
are among the most hospitable people in the world. If foreigners visit a
Chinese family, they would be surprised at the warmth that they would receive
as guests.
When you visit a Chinese
family, the host usually makes tea for you. Then he will serve you snacks(小吃) like biscuits or candy.
Someone in the family will also chat with you, never letting you feel lonely.
At the same time, other
family members will prepare a meal for you. Chinese people treat(款待) their guests with a big
meal. They always present more food than the guest can eat. On the table, the
guests must be the first to eat. Perhaps one of the things that surprises a
western guest most is that the Chinese host likes to pick food for visitors,
which won’t happen at western tables. The Chinese family go out of their way to
make you feel at home. As you are done eating, the host usually says, “It seems
that you didn’t eat much. Please eat more.” Although you tell them you are
full, they still put more food in your bowl.

western visitor feel surprised when the host picks food for him?
Because he thinks it’s not polite.
Because he thinks it’s not necessary.
Because it won’t happen in western countries.
4. What the
Chinese family do for the guests is to _______.
make them feel at home
B. show their wealth
make them feel uncomfortable
5. What’s the
meaning of the words by Confucius at the end of the passage?
A.学而时习之,不亦说乎?

When most people think of the Olympics, they don’t think of science.
But in the USA, each year, students take part in a kind of competition called
the Science Olympiad.
&&& It has a lot of different events.
Students go there to show how much they know about the science of music,
biology, chemistry and others. My best event is forestry (森林学). This time, I
went to the Olympiad with my school’s team. We had
worked hard, but this was the state competition. It would be hard to win.
&&& The Olympiad was out of town, so we got
to ride on a bus and stay in a hotel for a night. The Olympiad was in three big
rooms. When we got there, we set up our team’s “camp” off to one side. The big day had come at last! First, I went to
watch the tower building competition. That’s when
students build small towers and put heavy things on top of it. They hope they
can hold them up. One of my schoolmates was putting things on her tower. She
was nervous, and in the end it was too heavy for her tower to hold it—it broke! I felt bad for her. After lunch, I helped some teammates
with their events. One was geography, and the other was history. I don’t know much about those things, so I just watched my teammates do
most of the work. At last, it was time for my favorite event—forestry. Another student was also in the forestry event. The rules
were easy. We had to look at more than 40
different kinds of leaves and find out which plants they were from. We also had to answer
some questions about the uses of each leaf. I knew almost all of the leaves and
could answer most of the questions. I had spent more than a month studying on
the Internet to get ready. At the end, it was time for the awards (颁奖), I was nervous, because the forestry awards were last. We won
second place in the whole state! A nice man gave me a medal and smiled at me.
&& &I had a great time at the Science Olympiad. I can’t wait for next year!

answer according to the passage.

1970 was World Conservation(保护)Year. The United Nations wanted everyone to know that the world was
in danger. They hoped something could be done.
Here is one example of the problem. At one time there were 1,300
kinds of plants, trees and flowers in Holland(荷兰),but now only 866 are left. The others have
been destroyed(毁灭)by
modern people and their science. We are polluting earth, air, water and
everything around us. We can’t live without these things. If things go on like
this, we shall destroy ourselves.
What will happen in the future? Perhaps it’s more important to ask
“What must we do?” More and more young people have known this. Many of them are
helping to save our earth. For example, they plant trees. In a small town in
the United States, a large group of girls cleaned the banks of 11 kilometers of
their river. Young people may hear about conversation through a song called “No
