When I was young, I had an old neighbor named Dr. Gibbs. He didn’t look like any doctor I’d ever known. He never shouted at us for playing in his yard. TS said that everyone has a changing circle of friends. However, no matter how frequently we renew our phone books, some names always remain. These names remind us of the good times we spent together with our friends. Though we may not see them every& day, they will always stay in our hearts. Tom was often called "Big Head" at school because of his extraordinarily large head. He was one of my close friends at primary school. But since graduation, we have been studying in different cities and haven't seen each other for a long time. Several days ago, I received an e-mail saying that my former classmates from primary school were holding a party to get together and chat about past memories. I was so excited because [ would get to see Tom again. What would he look like now? Would we still feel as close to each other as we had done back then? I was a little frightened about what I would find. When I arrived at the party, I did manage to recognize Tom. However, he was much taller than he had been before. What's more, his head was no longer big. "Hi, Buddy. Do you recognize me?" Tom walked towards me. "Of course. How could I ever forget our ' Big Head' ," I said jokingly, "But where has your big head gone?" "Haha, maybe it didn't keep up with the steps of time and stayed in the past," Tom patted his own head and answered with a laugh. All my misgivings suddenly disappeared. I realized that time had changed us outwardly, but our friendship hadn't changed at all. I chatted happily with Tom about our shared experiences in primary school. Then I looked around the small room and saw different faces, both familiar and unfamiliar, but none of them the faces of strangers. The whole party was filled with a warm atmosphere. Everyone was lost in the sweet memories of childhood. They forgot all their present-day stresses and pressures. "Hey, what are you thinking about? Come and get some pizza!" A call from a friend woke me up from my thoughts. I hurried towards the table. "Wait! That biggest piece is mine!"小题1:Why are some names always in our phone books?A.Because everyone has a changing circle of friends.B.Because we sometimes forget to renew phone books.C.Because we'll never forget some of our friends.D.Because our circle of friends will not change.小题2:According to the passage, which of the following statements is TRUE?A.Tom has changed a lot since primary school.B.Tom invited the author to the get-together party by email.C.The author recognized Tom immediately because of his big head.D.Tom couldn't recognize the author at the first sight.小题3:What does the underlined word "misgiving" mean (in para. 8 )?A.expectation and excitementB.worries and doubtsC.stresses and pressuresD.shyness and nervousness小题4:The author writes the last paragraph to showA.others can't understand what the author is thinking aboutB.The pizzas are not adequate for everyone in the partyC.the author wants to have a big pizza very muchD.the author enjoys the warm atmosphere of the party greatly小题5:Which of the following proverbs can be used to conclude this passage.'?A.A friend in need is a friend indeed.B.Time reveals a person's heart.C.F the older, the better.D.A faithful friend is hard to find.

Adults usually do not remember most of the things that are taught by their teachers at school. But this story is one such lesson that I will never forget. Every time I drift off course, I think of this story. It was a normal Monday morning, and my teacher was teaching us on important things in life and about devoting ourselves to what is important to us. This is how the story went: An old man lived in a certain part of London, and he would wake up every morning and go to the subway. He would get onto the train right to Central London, and then sit at the street corner and beg. He would do this every single day of his life. He sat at the same street corner and begged for almost 20 years. His house was dirty, and a stench (恶臭) came out of the house and it smelled terrible. The neighbors could not stand the smell any more, so they called for the police officers to clear the place. The officers knocked down the door and cleaned the house. There were small bags of money all over the house that he had collected over the years. The police counted the money, and they soon realized that the old man was a millionaire (百万富翁). They waited outside his house expecting to share the good news with him. When the old man arrived home that evening, one of the officers told him that there was no need for him to beg any more as he was a rich man now, a millionaire. But the old man he went into his house and locked the door. The next morning he woke up as usual, went to the subway, sat at the street corner and continued to beg.Clearly, this old man had no great plans, dreams or anything significant (有意义的) for his life. We learn nothing from this story other than staying focused on the things we enjoy doing.小题1:The neighbor called the police because ______.A.the old man kept begging money from them every dayB.there was something dangerous in the old man’s houseC.the old man wouldn’t buy tickets for the trainD.they couldn’t bear the smell from the old man’s house小题2:When the old man knew he was a millionaire, he ______.A.remained calmB.became excitedC.felt worriedD.became nervous小题3:What lesson do we learn from the story?A.Make great plans for your life.B.Keep on doing what you like.C.Do something that is good to society.D.Depend on yourself rather than others.

I told my friend Graham that I often cycle two miles from my house to the town centre but unfortunately there is a big hill on the route. He replied, “You mean fortunately.” He explained that I should be glad of the extra exercise that the hill provided. My attitude to the hill has now changed. I used to grumble as I approached it but now I tell myself the following. This hill will exercise my heart and lungs. It will help me to lose weight and get fit. It will mean that I live longer. This hill is my friend. Finally I comfort myself with the thought of all those silly people who pay money to go to a gym and sit on stationery exercise bicycles when I can get the same value for free. I have a smile of satisfaction as I reach the top of the hill. Problems are there to be faced and overcome. We cannot achieve anything with an easy life. Helen Keller was the first deaf and blind person to gain a university degree. Her activism and writing proved inspirational. She wrote, “Character cannot be developed in ease and quiet. Only through experiences of trial and suffering can vision be cleared, ambition inspired and success achieved.” One of the key factors of success in life is our attitude towards adversity (逆境). From time to time we all face hardships, problems, accidents, afflictions and difficulties. Some are of our making but many confront us through no fault of our own. While we cannot choose the adversity we can choose our attitude towards it. Douglas Bader was 21 when in 1931 he had both legs cut off following a flying accident. He was determined to fly again and went on to become one of the leading flying aces in the Battle of Britain with 22 aerial victories over the Germans. He was an inspiration to others during the war. He said, “Don’t listen to anyone who tells you that you can’t do this or that. That’s nonsense. Make up your mind, and you’ll never use crutches (拐杖) or a stick, and then have a go at evening. Go to school, and join in all the games you can. Go anywhere you want to. But never, never let them persuade you that things are too difficult or impossible.” The biographies of great people are full of examples of how they took steps to overcome the difficulties they faced. The common thread is that they did not become depressed. They chose their attitude. They chose to be positive. They took on the challenge. They won. Nevertheless, there is still the problem of how you change your attitude towards adversity.小题1:The underlined word “grumble” in the second paragraph is closest in meaning to ________.A.trembleB.complainC.speed up D.slow down小题2:Which of the following is true according to the author of the passage?A.Climbing hills on bicycles is the best way to take exercise.B.People are wise to pay to go to the gym.C.Those who want to achieve success can’t expect to live an easy life.D.People’s attitude towards adversity is the only factor that determines whether they will succeed.小题3:By quoting what Douglas Bader said, the author intends to tell us “________”.A.Failure is the mother of success.B.A fall into the pit, a gain in your wit.C.If you venture nothing, you will have nothing.D.Nothing is difficult to the man who will try.小题4:Following this passage, the author will further talk about ________.A.how his friend helped him to change his attitude towards the adversity he facedB.what steps to take to change your attitude towards the adversity you faceC.what great people have in commonD.why it is important to keep optimistic in face of adversity小题5:Which of the following can best function as the title of the passage?A.Face adversity with a smileB.Different attitudes towards adversityC.Nothing is impossibleD.Life is full of adversity
