dance to the
music“伴着音乐跳舞”;all
of a sudden“突然”。
2. B& in honour
of“纪念”;in
celebration of“庆
祝”;in favour of“支持”;in
place of“代替”。
6. A& draw
upon“利用”;insist
on“坚持”;call
upon“拜访”;put
on“穿上”。
decision。
9. B& in need
of“需要”;in
addition to“除此之外,还……”;instead
of“代替,而不是……”;owing
to“由于,因……
10. A& give
away“(有意无意地)泄露”;give
“分发”;give up“放弃”;give
off“放出,
famous twin-tower stood。
therefore“因此”;above
是,尤其是”;however“然而”;after
The house was too expensive and
too big.
案为A项。
take...seriously“严肃
左右自己成为音乐家的理想。A项意为“条件”;
take
神经损伤(the nerve damage)是Glennie失
去听觉的主要原因(cause)。evidence证据;
from sb.。
turn to
人寻求帮助);used to
23. A& tell
experience(经验);而carefulness(细心)和身
定语从句that I have修饰sense。effort
determined to do)要
家。dissatisfied不满意的;&astonished惊讶的;
scouraged气馁的。A、B、D三项都是Glennie
(applied to the Royal Academy of
Music)”。accept
故选A。
Royal Academy
以最高的荣誉从the Royal Academy of Music毕业(graduate)。
Glennie
selection.”

One possible
or book, which do you prefer?
Some of us think that it is better to see the film than to read the
book in the original. The reason is that it takes less time to
understand the whole story. Besides, the film is usually more
interesting, and it is easier to follow.
Some others have just the opposite opinion. They think that they
can get more detailed information from the original. Meanwhile, the
language in the book is possibly more lively and
beautiful.
Personally, I agree with the second view. Actually I have more
reasons for it. I think I can stay at home, reading quietly in a
situation of my own, and what’s more, I am able to better
understand the author’s ideas. In a word, to read the original work
is better than to see the film based on it.

Charles Robert Darwin()was an Englis h naturalist, who
provided scientific evidence that all s pecies of life have
developed over time called natural selection. The fact that
evolution occurs became accepted by the scientific community and
the general public in his li fetime, while his theory of natural
selection came to be widely seen as the primary explanation of the
process of evolution in the 1930s, and now forms the basis of
modern evolutionary theory.
Darwin developed his interest in natural history while studying
first medicine at Edingburgh University, then theology(神学)at
Cambridge. His five-year voyage on the Beagle established him as a
geologist, and publication of his journal of the voyage made him
famous as a popular author. Puzzled by the geographical
distribution(分布)of wildlife and fossils(化石)he collected on the
voyage, Darwin formed his theory of natural selection in 1838.
Although he discussed his ideas with several naturalists, he needed
time for further research. He wrote up his theory in 1858.
His book On the Origin of Species established evolution as
the better scientific explanat ion of diversification(多样化)in
nature. He examined human evolution and sexual selection in The
Descent of Man, and Selection in Relation to Sex,
followed by The Expression of the Emotions in Man and
Animals. His research on plants was published in a series of
books, and in his final book, and he examined earthworms and their
effect on soil.
He was buried in Westminster Abbey, close to John Herschel and
Isaac Newton after he died in 1882.

bears are born in dens(洞穴)on land and their mother stays with them
for the whole winter without eating anything. The mother and the
babies emerge around March, famished from a long winter and
must immediately go hunting to find food stay alive. Now, the only
hunting they know is to catch seals from floating ice in the open
ocean. In March, polar bear mothers and cubs have to swim from the
land in Spitsbergen to the edge of the polar ice cap.
&&& Normally
this is a short swim, since in March the polar ice cap is very
close to the land, and the polar bears, and even the babies, are
good swimmers. However, last year we saw that the polar ice cap had
really shrunk in size due to global warming. Swimming following
them hundreds of miles, especially when they are hungry and have
babies, is really hard, and many bears are dying because of
starvation.

Music is often divided into several categories or groups. Some
of the categories are classical music, traditional music, rock
music, and jazz music.
The first kind, classical music, refers to orchestra (管弦乐)music
that originated in Europe a few hundred years ago. Most of the
original classical music was composed or written in Italy, Germany,
Austria or Russia. Beethoven and Bach were two famous composers of
classical music. Classical music is usually played by a variety of
string(弦)instruments, such as the violin, and wind instruments,
such as the flute.
The second type of music is traditional music. It comes from a
particular culture. Every culture has its own special forms of
traditional music, and its own special instruments for playing its
traditional music.
Another kind of music is rock music. Rock is generally a loud
kind of music, played with a strong beat. Rock musicians often use
electric instruments, such as electric guitars and electric pianos,
but ______ can also be used. It probably began in Europe about 30
or 40 years ago. Rock music became very popular, especially among
young people.
fourth kind of music is Jazz. Jazz probably comes from Africa
originally. Jazz has a different kind of rhythm from other kinds of
music. A variety of musical instruments are used to play this kind
of music, especially wind instruments.
These are the four general types of music. In addition, many
kinds of music are combinations of classical and traditional, or
classical and jazz, and so on.
