What would you rather have on a night out - a barrel of laughs or a barrel of beer? At The Laughing Horse New Act Of The Year Final - you could have both! 15 talented comedians performing in one of Brixton's nicest venues - The Dogstar.
Since 2001, The Laughing Horse have been hosting the 'new act of the year' event with an ultimate prize of ?1000, as well as the chance of being able to perform at a variety of Laughing Horse comedy venues all throughout the year... As well, of course, as the star prize - a little winners trophy! Over 1000 entrants applied this year, whittled down to the top 15 after numerous heats all over the UK. With previous entrants such as Jack Whitehall & Rhod Gilbert (both coming second) the quality of finalists is always really high and so promises to be a great night out.
This year the event took place in The Dogstar in Brixton. Full of lovely staff, the lovely little venue is normally a great place to go for a drink. However, for this event they seemed slightly unprepared! Unfortunately there was nowhere near enough seating for the amount of people that had come along to support some of the UK's best new comedians. The high level of comedy definitely kept me entertained, but didn't fully distract me from the annoyance of having to stand for the duration of the 3.5 hour event! Considering tickets were ?12 each, I think the venue should have splashed out on some extra seating to accommodate the paying customers!
As said, all of the acts were of a high quality, but there were 5 acts for me that stood out for the sheer reason that they had me and my friend almost crying with laughter. One of my top three was Wizzy Janew - a visually impaired comedian who had the audience in stitches from beginning to end. His casual demeanor and easy delivery made his set one of my favourites. I was shocked that he didn't make it to the final 3 or even get a special mention, because his comedy was definitely TV-worthy.
Another firm favourite of mine was Robin Morgan - a very down to earth comedian from Cardiff, showing strong potential as a new act on the scene, basing his set about his camp image and his terrible relationships. Really enjoyed his set and will be happy to see his name on any comedic set-lists in the future!
Finishing off the night, they definitely left one of the best 'til last with Eshaan Akbar, reaffirming his talent with a special mention from the judges at the end of the evening. His set was quite familiar and touched upon jokes that lots of Asian comedians have made in the past, but the self-proclaimed GP-lookalike managed to make it sound unique and entertaining with his charming, likeable manner.
Ed Caruana however was the second on the stage - and came third overall! It was a huge shame that he didn't come slightly higher, but equally so, I was very happy to see him in the final 3. His awkward, self-depreciating, observational comedy was brilliant. I really enjoyed the montage that looked back on his set at the end - it was very unique and set him apart from the other comedians.
Olaf Falafel came in at second place in the competition for his audience interaction and high energy, but he was beaten to the top spot by the winner of the evening - and a definite winner in my eyes also - Jenny Collier! She was hilarious! Her quick verbal quips, her straightforward crudity and her naughty innuendos combined with her naturally sweet, charming persona, made her a strong winner in everyone's eyes. Picking up the top prize was something she deserved. She appeared comfortable and in control on the stage, definitely the signs of a professional!
I wish all 15 of the acts the best of luck with the rest of their careers. They all possess a huge amount of talent and could definitely make it onto the comedy circuit with ease.
