Lady&Morley&suggests&that&the&Second&World&War,&not&the&Suffrage,&was&the&major&catalyst&for&women's&rights.&&In&the&War,&women&were&called&to&do&all&kinds&of&jobs.&They&were&in&the&munition&factories,&the&Armed&Services&and&driving&ambulances.&A&whole&new&world&had&opened&up&and&their&lives&would&never&be&the&same&again.&&The&post-war&generation&gained&greater&access&to&universities,&which&permitted&a&choice&over&their&vocation.&&Suddenly,&the&prospect&of&working&24&hours&a&day,&52&weeks&a&year,&in&the&company&of&small&children&and&doing&household&chores,&didn't&seem&like&such&a&good&bargain&as&before.&Marriage&was&no&longer&the&be&all&and&end&all.&
The&article&was&written&in&the&midst&of&the&political&struggle&for&female&suffrage,&20&years&after&property&owning&women&–&a&predictably&small&minority&–&were&awarded&the&vote.&The&article&blamed&the&growing&influence&of&the&Suffrage&on&&a&few&women&possessing&property...who&felt&themselves&aggrieved&of&the&parliamentary&vote&.&However,&their&greatest&fears&were&realised&when&all&women&over&the&age&of&30&were&first&given&the&vote&in&1918.&In&that&same&year,&Constance&Markievicz&became&the&first&woman&to&win&a&seat&in&the&House&of&Commons,&although&her&membership&of&Sinn&Fein&prevented&her&entering&Parliament.&Ironically,&in&1919,&it&was&a&member&of&the&aristocracy,&the&American-born&Viscountess&Astor,&who&was&the&first&woman&to&be&elected&as&a&Member&of&Parliament&for&Plymouth&Sutton.&
