amA 63-year-old man has been sentenced to four years imprisonment for a series of artifice bank burglaries across the south of England.Retired Joe Charles Annerson of Canonbury Road, N1 was sentenced on Friday 1 March at Croydon Crown Court after pleading guilty to six artifice burglary offences at various locations across London and the south-east of England including Croydon, Brighton and Chelmsford.Annerson carried out the offences over a four-month period between May and August 2012 and stole approximately ?100,000 in cash from the various banks and building societies.On each occasion Annerson would contact staff at the branch, informing them on the phone that air conditioning engineers would be attending later that day. He would then attend the branch, with another – as yet unidentified – accomplice and they would both be let into the secure areas of the branch, with staff believing them to be genuine contractors.Once inside, they would then look for cash in low-security areas only accessible to staff of the bank, before stealing the cash and leaving. It could then take up to several hours for staff to realise that the cash or items had been stolen.Detectives from Croydon CID were alerted to the scam when the Croydon branches of Natwest and Nationwide were targeted by Annerson. Further enquiries with the banks revealed that they believed the offence to be linked to several others in the south-east.Liaising with the MPS’s Central Intelligence Unit, Annerson was identified as a possible suspect for the offences and further analysis of CCTV footage led to Annerson being arrested on 24 August 2012.Following further enquiries, including ID parades with staff members from some of the banks targeted, as well as cell-site analysis of Annerson’s mobile phone, led to him being charged on 13 November 2012 with seven counts of artifice burglary.He pleaded guilty to six of the offences on Friday 1 March at Croydon Crown Court and was sentenced to four years imprisonment on the same day.DC Lewis Sanderson, from Croydon CID, who led the investigation, said: “This was a sophisticated scam that Annerson was involved with, targeting banks and building societies across the south-east.
