Unit 9 What Is Happiness?John Ciardi(abridged) The right to pursue happiness is issued to Americans with their birth certificates, but no one seems quite sure which way it runs. It may be we are issued a hunting license but offered no game. Jonathan Swift seemed to think so when he attacked the idea of happiness as “the possession of being well-deceived,” the felicity of being “a fool among knaves.” For Swift saw society as Vanity Fair, the land of false goals.It is, of course, un-American to think in terms of fools and knaves. We do, however, seem to be dedicated to the idea of buying our way to happiness. We shall all have made it to Heaven when we possess enough.And at the same time the forces of American commercialism are hugely dedicated to making us deliberately unhappy. Advertising is one of our major industries, and advertising exists not to satisfy desires but to create them ― and to create them faster than any man’s budget can satisfy them. For that matter, our whole economy is based on a dedicated insatiability. We are taught that to possess is to be happy, and then we are made to want. We are even told it is our duty to want. It was only a few years ago, to cite a single example, that car dealers across the country were flying banners that read &You Auto Buy Now.& They were calling upon Americans, as an act approaching patriotism, to buy at once, with money they did not have, automobiles they did not really need, and which they would be required to grow tired of by the time the next year’s models were released.Or look at any of the women’s magazines. There, as Bernard DeVoto once pointed out, advertising begins as poetry in the front pages and ends as pharmacopoeia and therapy in the back pages. The poetry of the front matter is the dream of perfect beauty. This is the baby skin that must be hers. These, the flawless teeth. This, the perfumed breath she must exhale. This, the sixteen-year-old figure she must display at forty, at fifty, at sixty, and forever.Once past the vaguely uplifting fiction and feature articles, the reader finds the other face of the dream in the back matter. This is the harness into which Mother must strap herself in order to display that perfect figure. These, the chin straps she must sleep in. This is the salve that restores all, this is her laxative, these are the tablets that melt away fat, these are the hormones of perpetual youth, these are the stockings that hide varicose veins.Obviously no half-sane person can be completely persuaded either by such poetry or by such pharmacopoeia and orthopedics. Yet someone is obviously trying to buy the dream as offered and spending billions every year in the attempt. Clearly the happiness-market is not running out of customers, but what are they trying to buy?The idea &happiness,& to be sure, will not sit still for easy definitions: the best one can do is to try to set some extremes to the idea and then work in toward the middle. To think of happiness as acquisitive and competitive will do to set the materialistic extreme. To think of it as the idea one senses in, say, a holy man of India will do to set the spiritual extreme. That holy man’s ideal of happiness is in needing nothing from outside himself. In wanting nothing, he lacks nothing. He sits immobile, rapt in contemplation, free even of his own body.7 Or nearly free of it. If devout admirers bring him food, if not, he starves indifferently. Why be concerned? What is physical is an illusion to him. Contemplation is his joy and he achieves it through a fantastically demanding discipline, the accomplishment of which is itself a joy within him.But, perhaps because I am Western, I doubt such catatonic happiness, as I doubt the dreams of the happiness-market. What is certain is that his way of happiness would be torture to almost any Western man. Yet these extremes will still serve to frame the area within which all of us must find some sort of balance. Thoreau ― a creature of both Eastern and Western thought ― had his own firm sense of that balance. His aim was to save on the low levels in order to spend on the high.Possession for its own sake or in competition with the rest of the neighborhood would have been Thoreau’s idea of the low levels. The active discipline of heightening one’s perception of what is enduring in nature would have been his idea of the high.10 What he saved from the low was time and effort he could spend on the high. Thoreau certainly disapproved of starvation, but he would put into feeding himself only as much effort as would keep him functioning for more important efforts.Happiness is never more than partial. There are no pure states of mankind. Whatever else happiness may be, it is neither in having nor in being, but in becoming. What the Founding Fathers declared for us as an inherent right, we should do well to remember, was not happiness but the pursuit of happiness. What they might have underlined, could they have foreseen the happiness-market, is the cardinal fact that happiness is in the pursuit itself, in the meaningful pursuit of what is life-engaging and life-revealing, which is to say, in the idea of becoming. A nation is not measured by what it possesses or wants to possess, but by what it wants to become.

ShareGood question?
And, what does it have to do with property investing?
Well, let me see if I can make a tie in …
Birthday Gift
For my birthday last month I received
one was a book called “Gittinomic$” written by a man named Ross Gittins.
Basically, it’s a book about econom he’s also a writer for some of the biggest newspapers in Australia.
I just finished reading it, and I’d highly recommend it to everyone.
I didn’t always agree with his opinions and I found his tone of voice sometimes too strong (e.g. passing off opinion as if it were fact!) but, it’s good (my opinion!).
And, it got me thinking and got me looking at things from a different perspective.
But, the chapter I found the most engaging and the most enlightening is the last chapter.
Chapter 15 titled “Happiness.”
In my opinion, everyone could benefit from reading this chapter.
It’s was a real eye- a real wake- a real bring me back to earth message.
I Used to Know How …
While reading the chapter I couldn’t help but think that I used to know – long ago – about happiness.
I remember back to when I was young and playing with my friends.
We were happy.
No one had to teach us how to be happy, we just knew how on our own.
It seems to have come naturally.
Now that I’m an adult, I don’t seem to have as much natural – instinctive – happiness.
Maybe I’m trying too hard?
Or, maybe I’m playing the wrong game?
Mr Gittins gave me some ideas to ponder …
Recommended Reading
Yes, I believe you should read the chapter on Happiness.
But, if you don’t have time for the whole chapter then I’d like to share with you a particular section that really struck me hard.
Ross Gittins talks about a leading scholar, professor Ed Diener of the University of Illinois, who’s a social scientist working on – get this – happiness research.
Anyway, Professor Diener’s research came up with 3 ‘steps people can take to ensure they are as happy as they can be.’
I’ll tell you the three steps but first let me warn you – not one of them has to do with money!
Maybe that’ I sometimes try to correlate money with happiness.
Could my logic be flawed?
3 Step to Happiness.
So, the 3 steps to happiness ( read the book for the juicy details!):
Well, that it.
Now you know the secret(s) to happiness.
As I read “the steps” in the book I I knew these steps already.
I guess in the process of growing up and becoming an adult, I must have forgotten them along the way.
Consequently, I haven’t been as happy as I could have been over the years.
Now, I’ll just have to make up for lost time and make a point to be a lot happier from now on!
What does this have to do with property investing?
I’m not sure … maybe happy people make better property investors?
What do you reckon?
How, did I do with my tie- how this article ties in with property investing?
I agree – I failed.

&Many writers have talked about what
happiness&&is so
far.&&“Happiness depends upon
ourselves”, “The purpose of our lives is to be happy “, are two
quotes about happiness by Aristotle and Dalai Lama, respectively.
Answers about happiness even vary among the ordinary people as
well. Last year, CCTV, the top TV station in China, performed a
random street survey for happiness. As expected, Chinese citizens
gave many different views on the happiness, depending on their
social ranks. In my opinion, happiness is a feeling of joy and love
in my heart. It is a moment when I have no worries and fears in the
living environment and my personal life.
Safe living environment and safe food
mean&&a lot to me in term of
happiness.&&Howard County, the
place I am living now, has been listed as one of the most suitable
places in USA &for living. The beautiful
&lake, birds, ducks, boats and pleasant residents
in the local park always cheer me up whenever I have a walk
there.&&No gun shooting and no
air pollution make me worry nothing about my living environment in
county.&&Meanwhile,&
&the safe and health food in the local store is my
daily blessing, compared to the daily food in my home country where
fake and poisonous food is not rare.
Howard County,
I am also feeling very happy about my personal
life.&&After over twenty years of
marriage with my spouse, I am very pleased with my family life.
Although I am a full time mom for many years, I am not doing chores
alone by myself. &My spouse is always willing to
help me to take care of kids and gardening, etc. Being an
oncologist, my spouse also provides the family with a decent
income, which allows us to travel worldwide. Disneyland, Florida
beach, Paris museum, and trip to China every other
year,&&give me the feeling of
happiness.
In addition to the daily life, routine church life is the other
source of my inner peace and joy. Every Sunday, I go to church with
my children to worship my belief. The beautiful music, holy songs
and nice people in the church fill my heart with a joy from the
above world. God’s words are the best food for my spirit growth.
Sometimes I serve as a volunteer to babysit the little kids in the
church. Baby’s smiling is like sunshine to brighten my heart very
much. I also enjoy being an editor for the church journal by
working with the other people together to spread church news and
God’s words to both believers and non-believers.
In the movie “Happiness” we watched in the class, people from
around the world talk about happiness in their own language and
culture.&&In my view, everyone
has his/her own sense of happiness regardless of their income, race
and social rank.&&Happiness
cannot be copied from each other and it is a personal feeling in
our heart.&&Based on my own life
experience, I reason
that&&happiness not only comes
from material satisfaction but also depends on spiritual joy.
