The Biggest Box-Office Bombs Of 2012
Kate Beckinsale's "Total Recall" remake didn't totally take off this summer at theaters.Sony Pictures / ColumbiaWhile "" and "" both saw more than $1 billion at the box office worldwide this year, there were many films which came up short at theaters.
From Kate Beckinsale and Jennifer Aniston to Judd Apatow to Disney's Andrew Stanton, big name actors and producers were not spared from big losses at theaters this year.
We've taken a look at 25 of this year's biggest box-office busts, surprises, and upsets which failed to hit the mark with audiences.
We came up with our rankings based on comparisons of the film's budgets with domestic and worldwide intake and opening weekend expectations versus actual intake.
One thing's for sure, life after "Friday Night Lights" has not been kind to Taylor Kitsch.
25. "Mirror Mirror"

There was only room for one "Snow White" film this summer. Julia Roberts' lighthearted take on the fairytale tanked at the box office when it earned $18 million of its estimated $85 million budget opening weekend. The Relativity movie was expected to debut .
Though the film ended up earning $166.2 million worldwide, domestically "Mirror Mirror" brought in $64.9 million.

2012 has not been a good year for Gerard Butler. In less than two months he has had two box-office busts. The first was this surfing film. After two weeks in theaters, "Mavericks" was pulled out of . Only left in less than 70 theaters, the film won't earn back an estimated $14 million.

10. "Rise of the Guardians"

One of the biggest surprises of the film year was the movie on which DreamWorks Animation bet most of its fourth quarter earnings. "Rise of the Guardians." The company's stock

Our best guess for the film's performance deals not with the weekend in which it debuted, but rather, the movie material. The audience demo for a film about the Easter Bunny and Santa was roughly young elementary school boys who were already past the faze of knowing Santa was anything but real. Younger boys who may have had an interest in the film may have been deterred by parents who found the situation material too dark and violent for 5, 6, and 7 year olds.
We don't have it up higher on our list because with no other holiday films out, the film should make up for some of its losses through the end of the year.
8. "Dark Shadows"

Though audiences were enchanted with Johnny Depp's portrayal of wacky characters in "Alice in Wonderland" and "Charlie and the Chocolate Factory," his take on the gothic soap opera of the late '60s missed its mark at theaters. "Dark Shadows" was thought to make , and, at best .
6. "Rock of Ages"

Tom Cruise. Singing. If you were to ask movie-goers what "Rock of Ages" was about, that's most likely the answer you'd receive.

EPISODE　1
The One Where Monica Gets a New Roommate (The Pilot)
*pilot: 原意是导航员,在这里是指试播.一般美国在一个电视节目正式播出之前会先推出一集来测试节目播出效果,以对节目内容和播出时间作适当调整.
SCENE 1: CENTRAL PERK. (ALL PRESENT EXCEPT RACHEL AND ROSS)
*Central perk:众所周知NEW YORK 有一个CENTRAL PARK (中央公园),所以这个咖啡馆取名为CENTRAL PERK, 因为 PERK 和PARK 谐音.英语中有很多类似这种谐音的用法,类似我们汉语里的同音/谐音词.
MONICA: There‘s nothing to tell! He‘s just some guy I work with!
JOEY: C‘mon, you‘re going out with the guy! There‘s gotta be something wrong with him.
这里很明显JOEY在取笑MONICA.也说明MONICA以前交往的男友,其他人都不喜欢,这也为本季后面一集的故事做了铺垫.

*这是典型的CHANDLER的讽刺.
PHOEBE: Wait, does he eat chalk?
*PHOEBE的幽默,有点象我们所说的无厘头式的幽默.顺便说一句,FRIENDS在美国播了10年,这些演员也演了10年同样的角色,而且每个演员都赋予他/她所饰演的角色一些很鲜明的个性.这些个性的表露都是很自然,不漏声色的,需要我们从角色的每一句台词,每一个细微的动作,表情或眼神中去细细品位个中的幽默之处.

PHOEBE: Just, ‘cause, I don‘t want her to go through what I went through with Carl- oh!
*PHOEBE开始解释了.Carl这个人物只在这里被提过一次,我们只能推断CARL是PHOEBE的前男友,而且此人可能有EAT CHALK的怪毛病.
MONICA: Okay, everybody relax. This is not even a date. It‘s just two people going out to dinner and- not having sex.
CHANDLER: Sounds like a date to me.
*很显然大家并不相信MONICA所说的这只是一个普通的约会的说法. 在美语中,DATE如果没有特殊说明就是指一男一女晚上一起约会,约会的内容往往是先吃饭,然后或者去看电影,或者再去酒吧什么的,更进一步的还会共度良宵.但这并不表明两人就已经是男女朋友的关系,一切还要看以后的发展.所以在美国当有人问你: ARE YOU DATING SOMEBODY? 并不一定是问你有没有男/女朋友, 而只是问你你有没有”候选人”.

CHANDLER: Alright, so I‘m back in high school, I‘m standing in the middle of the cafeteria, and I realize I am totally naked.
*大家的话题从MONICA的DATE转移了.CHANDLER开始讲他的一个梦.
*CAFETERIA:在北美几乎所有的学校都有一个CAFETERIA.有的大一些的其实就象是我们的食堂,中午会有午餐出售,有的小一点的会有微波炉供大家热饭.而且CAFETERIA也是学生们举行聚会的一个重要场所. 而且CAFETERIA里通常都会有自动售货机,提供咖啡和饮料,所以这里也是学生们下课后的一个重要活动地点.所以CHANDLER在这样一个地方NAKED,无疑是很尴尬的了.
ALL: Oh, yeah. Had that dream.
CHANDLER: Then I look down, and I realize there‘s a phone... there.
*从CHANDLER的表情和眼神看,我们知道他是指那个”重要”部位.
JOEY: Instead of...?
CHANDLER: That‘s right.
JOEY: Never had that dream.
PHOEBE: No.
CHANDLER: All of a sudden, the phone starts to ring. And it turns out it‘s my mother, which is very weird, because- she never calls me!
*ALL OF A SUDDEN: 突然地; =SUDDENLY
*turn out: 结果是. Eg. I was so worried about my exam scores, but it turns out to be very good.
*weird:奇怪的.这个词在日常生活中常用;与BIZARD同义. 从后面的故事中我们会知道CHANDLER和他父母的关系并不是很好.

ROSS: (MORTIFIED) Hi.
*motified: motify的过去分词. 感情受到伤害的
JOEY: This guy says hello, I wanna kill myself.
*可见ROSS的HI是一个非常UNHAPPY的HI.
MONICA: Are you okay, sweetie?
*SWEETIE,甜心.这种称呼在美国使用的非常普遍,可以用于任何朋友,同事之间,但一般除了特别亲密的家人朋友之间(这种关系下,女的可以称呼男的SWEETIE,象ROSS 和MONICA),往往只是男的称呼女的,或者女的之间,很少女的这么称呼男的,或者男的之间用.类似的用法还有:MY DEAR. 但是HONEY一般只是用于男女朋友或夫妻之间,不能滥用.
ROSS: I just feel like someone reached down my throat, grabbed my small intestine, pulled it out of my mouth and tied it around my neck...

*CAROL是ROSS的前妻.和ROSS结婚后才慢慢意识到自己是一个女”同志”.所以和ROSS离婚了.
*stuff:泛指一些东西,事情. 这里是指CAROL把她的东西搬走了.
Eg. You like cooking? I am not interested in that kind of stuff.
PHOEBE: Ooh! Oh! (STARTS TO PLUCK AT THE AIR JUST IN FRONT OF ROSS)
*PHOEBE有时就是这么神神叨叨的.她觉的ROSS太倒霉了,觉的这样可以抓掉他的一些晦气.
*Pluck: 抓,揪
eg. She tried to pluck out some of her grey hairs.
Do you pluck your eyebrows?
ROSS: No, no don‘t! Stop cleansing my aura! No, just leave my aura alone, okay? I‘ll be fine, alright? Really, everyone. I hope she‘ll be very happy.
*显然ROSS并不喜欢她这样.ROSS可是一个古生物学家呢,他才不信这邪呢.但以ROSS的性格他也不会让PHOEBE难堪,所以他用反话来说:别赶走我的灵气.
*Aura: an effect or feeling that seems to surround and come fr (人或地方的)气氛,气息,韵味
MONICA: No you don‘t.
ROSS: No I don‘t, to hell with her, she left me!
*to hell with sb.某人下地狱去吧. 这句话在人们生气时也常用.
JOEY: And you never knew she was a lesbian...
*LESBIAN:女”同志”; GAY: 男”同志”;STRAIGHT:异性恋的。
ROSS: No!! Okay?! Why does everyone keep fixating on that? She didn‘t know, how should I know?
Fixate (on): Thinking, talking,etc. continuously about one particular thing, so as not to give enough attention to anything else. Eg. The popular newspapers seem to be fixated on stories about sex and drugs.
CHANDLER: Sometimes I wish I was a lesbian... (THE OTHERS STARE AT HIM) Did I say that out loud?
*CHANDLER本以为只有他自己能听见,但他说的太大声了…
JOEY: Alright Ross, look. You‘re feeling a lot of pain right now. You‘re angry. You‘re hurting. Can I tell you what the answer is?
(ROSS GESTURES HIS CONSENT)

*Strip joint: 脱衣舞厅. Strip dance: 脱衣舞. Strip girl: 脱衣舞娘
*按照JOEY的理解,ROSS的痛苦只需解决了HORMONE的问题就可以解决了.可见他并不明白ROSS真正痛苦的原因.谁让JOEY是个PLAY BOY 呢?
ROSS: I don‘t want to be single, okay? I just... I just- I just wanna be married again!
(ENTER RACHEL IN A WET WEDDING DRESS. SHE STARTS TO SEARCH AROUND THE ROOM)
CHANDLER: And I just want a million dollars! (EXTENDS HIS HAND HOPEFULLY)
*CHANDLER看到ROSS刚说想结婚马上就有一个新娘出现,所以他说他想要一百万.这是CHANDLER的幽默之处.
MONICA: Rachel?!
RACHEL: Oh God Monica hi! I just went to your building and you weren‘t there and then this guy with a big hammer said you might be here and you are, you are!
WAITRESS: Can I get you some coffee?
MONICA: (POINTING AT RACHEL) De-caff. (TO THE GANG) Okay, everybody, this is Rachel, another Lincoln High survivor. (TO RACHEL) This is everybody, this is Chandler, and Phoebe, and Joey, and- you remember my brother Ross?
*De-caff :不含咖啡因的咖啡.可能MONICA看RACHEL已经这么兴奋了,担心她再喝上含咖啡因的咖啡会更兴奋,所以给她点DE-CAFF ; 也可能因为她们是多年好友,她可能知道RACHEL的嗜好. 再多说几句 : 现在越来越多的人更注重健康的饮食,人们知道常喝含咖啡因的咖啡可能会对健康不利,而且这种咖啡喝多了也容易引起失眠,所以很多人都开始喝DE-CAFF的COFFEE,或者有的人给自己规定下午几点以后只喝DE-CAFF的COFFEE. 另外还有低脂肪的牛奶(LOW FAT MILK),健康可乐(DIET COKE),健康百事(DIET PEPSI), 等等.

MONICA: So you wanna tell us now, or are we waiting for four wet bridesmaids?

*MONICA看到RACHEL进来时是湿露露的,所以开玩笑说是不是还有4个湿露露的伴娘要来.
RACHEL: Oh God... well, it started about a half hour before the wedding. I was in the room where we were keeping all the presents, and I was looking at this gravy boat. This really gorgeous Lamauge gravy boat. When all of a sudden- (TO WAITRESS, WHO HAS BROUGHT HER COFFEE)Sweet ‘n‘ Lo?- I realized that I was more turned on by this gravy boat than by Barry! And then I got really freaked out, and that‘s when it hit me: how much Barry looks like Mr. Potato Head. Y‘know, I mean, he always looked familiar, but... Anyway, I just had to get out of there, and I started wondering ‘Why am I doing this, and who am I doing this for?‘. (TO MONICA) So anyway I just didn‘t know where to go, and I know that you and I have kinda drifted apart, but you‘re the only person I knew who lived here in the city.
*Gravy: 1. The juice which comes out of meat as it cooks, thickened with flour, etc., to serve with 2. something pleasing or valuable that happens or is gained easily.
*Gravy boat: A small deep long-shaped container with a handle, from which gravy can be poured at a meal 船形盛肉汁的有柄器皿
**Gravy train: 美差,肥缺. Eg: There’s so much money invested in this political campaign that everyone’s trying to climb on the gravy train.
*Lamouge: 一种法国的餐具品牌
*Sweet’n’low: 一种英国的低糖产品的品牌。从这一点,我们也可以看出RACHEL的性格,一般人在这种时候哪还有心思管这个,可是RACHEL不是这样的.这样不合时宜的问题逗人发笑，也是RACHEL的可爱之处.
*Turned on: something that excites or interests one strongly, esp. sexually
RACHEL发现一个漂亮的餐具竟然比BARRY更能激起她的”性”趣, 这突然引发了她对于自己和BARRY关系的思考.

RACHEL: Ooh, I was kinda hoping that wouldn‘t be an issue...
*KINDA: KIND OF… 口语中常用,有时其实并没有什么实质性的意义,就好象我们汉语中,我们在说一句话时,中间也会说”那个…”; 有时可以翻译成:有点…
EG.I found that Jerry might be kinda (kind of) too nice sometimes.

SCENE 2: MONICA‘S APARTMENT (ALL PRESENT AND WATCHING A SPANISH SOAP ON TV)
*SPANISHI SOAP: 西班牙的肥皂剧.
MONICA: Now I‘m guessing that he bought her the big pipe organ, and she‘s really not happy about it.
*Pipe Organ: 管风琴
RACHEL: (ON PHONE) Daddy, I just... I can‘t marry him! I‘m sorry. I just don‘t love him. Well, it matters to me!
*MATTER: to be important. 举个我们最常用的例子: IT DOESN’T MATTER.无所谓/没关系.
从RACHEL的语气我们可以听出来,她爸爸在听到她说她不能嫁给BARRY是因为她不爱BARRY时,一定说了”IT DOESN’T MATTER” (爱不爱又有什么关系呢)这样的话.
CHANDLER: (RE TV) Ooh, she should not be wearing those pants.
JOEY: I say push her down the stairs.
PHOEBE+ROSS+CHANDLER+JOEY: Push her down the stairs! Push her down the stairs! Push her down the stairs! (SHE IS PUSHED DOWN THE STAIRS. THEY CHEER)
RACHEL: C‘mon Daddy, listen to me! All of my life, everyone has always told me, ‘You‘re a shoe! You‘re a shoe, you‘re a shoe, you‘re a shoe!‘. And today I just stopped and I said, ‘What if I don‘t wanna be a shoe? What if I wanna be a- a purse, y‘know? Or a- or a hat! No, I‘m not saying I want you to buy me a hat, I‘m saying I am a ha- It‘s a metaphor, Daddy!
ROSS: You can see where he‘d have trouble.

PHOEBE: (SINGS) Raindrops on roses and rabbits and kittens, (RACHEL AND MONICA TURN TO LOOK AT HER)..bluebells and sleighbells and- something with mittens... La la la la...
