If imitation is the sincerest form of flattery, Asus just flattered the hell out of the iMac. Like Apple's class-leading all-in-one desktop, the Asus Zen AiO Pro Z240IC is a sleek aluminum slab with edge-to-edge glass up front and a curved back tapering to thin edges. An integral rear stand provides screen tilt but no height adjustment and a hole to tidily pass through power and peripheral cables. Indeed, so closely did Asus follow Apple's example that it copied an annoying design flaw (more on that in a moment).But if you're interested in a Windows alternative to the OS X all-in-ones, the $1,899 Zen becomes more tempting the more you look at it. At 23.8 inches, its touch screen splits the difference between the two non-touch sizes (21.5 and 27 inches) offered by Apple. It offers crisp 4K (3,840x2,160) resolution with 185 pixels per inch. That's a notch under the 218ppi offered by the , but still plenty sharp for demanding image and video editors.And the Asus has plenty of power for those apps, thanks to a sixth-generation &Skylake& Core i7 CPU and game-worthy Nvidia GeForce dedicated graphics. Memory (16GB) and storage (1.5TB) are both ample, the latter consisting of a fast 512GB solid-state drive paired with a 1TB hard drive.
Connectivity includes a USB 3.1 port with the small, reversible Type-C connector that has no right side up or upside down. An Intel RealSense 3D camera provides facial recognition for Windows Hello logins and the potential of controlling future apps with midair gestures instead of the touch screen, keyboard, or mouse.To be sure, $1,899 isn' it's $100 more than the larger, higher-resolution , though that iMac config has a relatively humble Core i5 processor, half the RAM, and no SSD. But we can't think of a Zen feature we'd willingly do without (just one or two we'd like to add). If you can swing the price, this is an excellent Windows all-in-one for both productivity and playtime.DesignLike the iMac, the AiO Pro Z240IC has a unibody aluminum shell, though instead of a plain silver finish it has a brushed-metal sheen in what Asus calls Icicle Gold. With no access doors or screws, you can't upgrade memory or storage without taking a hammer and chisel to the system.
Power and, if you have a wired instead of wireless Internet connection, Ethernet cables pass through a hole in the hinged stand, though the designers sacrificed some elegance in relying on a large, laptop-style 180-watt power brick instead of fitting the power supply inside the case as their Apple counterparts did.The design flaw Asus copied was placing all the ports at the rear of the machine—fine for an external hard drive or Ethernet cable you're only going to plug in once, but awkward for casually inserting a USB flash drive or SD card. One or two connectors for such devices on the front bezel, or even the odd underside-of-bezel or &chin& location chosen by HP for its current Pavilion and Envy all-in-ones (reviews coming soon), would have been more convenient.
As is, the Zen's backside offers a power button, SD/MMC card slot, microphone and headset jacks, Ethernet and power ports, two HDMI outputs for driving external monitors, four USB 3.0 ports, one USB 2.0 port (suitable for the wireless keyboard and mouse dongle), and the USB 3.1 Gen 2 (10Mbps) Type-C port. Bluetooth and dual-band 802.11ac Wi-Fi take care of wireless connectivity.Features
Whether or not you think a second HDMI-out port is overkill, you can join us in lamenting the (also iMac-like) absence of an HDMI-in port to use the Zen AiO's screen with a cable box or game console in a spatially challenged bedroom or dorm room. An HDMI input would also let you continue using the display with another computer once the Asus' internals become obsolete, though we admit that's about as far off as possible with any all-in-one today.It's a shame you can't use the display with other devices because it's a wowser—a 23.8-inch in-plane switching (IPS) panel with 3,840x2,160 resolution and 300 nits of brightness. The screen looks great from virtually any angle, with colors that pop (Asus says it covers 100 percent of the sRGB and 85 percent of the Adobe RGB color gamuts), sharp details, and high contrast. The touch screen responds smoothly to taps and swipes, too.Six speakers, or rather two 2-watt speakers and one 4-watt woofer on either side of the system, produce first-class sound, easily filling a room without sounding distorted or tinny. We fumbled hysterically trying to master the provided children's games for waving your hands and playing with on-screen objects via the RealSense 3D camera, but continue to be quite taken with Windows 10's face-recognition login option.Not only does Asus earn points for recognizing that a decent all-in-one desktop needs a wireless rather than wired keyboard and mouse combo, but the bundled peripherals are a step above the ticky-tacky units we see with many machines. (Strangely, though, you need to click—not just move—the mouse to wake the system from sleep.)Asus backs the Z240IC with a one-year parts-and-labor warranty and throws in 100GB of cloud storage for one year. There's a moderate amount of bloatware on the system, ranging from CyberLink PhotoDirector and PowerDirector to HealthVault, Netflix, and WildTangent games.
