After Cuba's revolution, Fidel Castro closed down most of the island's golf courses, ordering the lands to be used for less bourgeois pursuits. But in another sign of how things are changing on the Communist-run island, golf is making a comeback. The government has just given the go-ahead to the first of up to a dozen foreign investment projects to open new luxury golf resorts. And as Sarah Rainsford reports now from the Cuban coast, the game has some influential fans.
It's not the classical image of Communist Cuba: golfers driving and putting by carefully tended course. But this could soon be the norm here. Well, here's the clearest sign possible of how times are changing here in Cuba because the man just over there on the green in front of me, wearing a royal-blue polo shirt is Fidel Castro's son, Antonio.
