1.Must all these sentences be written/taken down/Must these sentences all be written/taken down2.had been on for 10 minutes when we arrived.3.Are they discussing who/whom to ask for help./Are they discussing who/whom they should ask for help.4.What a long time it took to operate on the patient./How long it took to operate/ do an operation on the patient.5.Leave me alone so that I can come up with/Leave me alone so that I will be able to come up with6.is often seen to drive her to school(by car/in a car)【解析】试题分析:1. a long time 是一个名词短语,因此感叹句中用what;如果用how的话,how 来修饰副词long,应该是how long it took。本句中还用到了句型it took sometime to do sth.,花费多长时间去做某事。5. 6.本题考查句型see sb. do sth.

There are several ways you can find out about the countries and places you wish to visit. You can talk to friends who have traveled to the places, you can go and see a colour film about them, or you can read a travel book.It seems that there are three kinds of travel books. The first are those that give a personal, subjective(主观的) idea of travels which their writer has got himself. These books can be useful if the writers share their traveling experiences with others. The second kind are those books which give objective(客观的) information of things to be done and seen. If a cultured person has written such a book about the facts of a place, then it is more useful. The third kind are those books which are called “a guide” to some place or other. If they are good, they will describe and explain the place in detail. Like the first kind , they can be interesting and exciting, but their main purpose is to help the reader plan his travel in the most practical way.Whatever kind of travel book you choose, you must make sure that the book does not describe everything as interesting, exciting or fantastic. You must also keep an open eyes on its date of publication(出版) because travel is very practical matter and many things change quickly in the 21st century. “The British government will offer £1,000,000 to anyone who can solve the world’s biggest problem—whatever it might be,” said Prime Minister(首相) David Cameron at a science conference. In an unusual competition, the Government will ask people to find out the greatest challenge(挑战) today, such as finding a replacement(替代) for oil, producing low cost food or curing AIDS/HIV. When the toughest problem has been decided, the Prime Minister will give away £1,000,000 to the person who successfully works out the answer. The competition follows the example of the Longitude Prize started by the government in 1714, which offered £20,000 (worth £6,000,000 today) to anyone who could discover how far east or west ships had sailed. Sailors could work out their location north and south, and were able to decide their local time from the sun. However, they needed to know the time at a reference(参照) point in order to find out how far they had travelled east or west. Many people thought the problem was impossible to solve, but the prize was finally won by John Harrison, an ordinary worker. He did this by designing a clock that kept accurate(准确的) time at sea and made it possible for sailors to work out their location.
Almost exactly 300 years on, Mr Cameron will have a group of scientists collect suggestions and draw up a short list of problems facing the world. He will then start a race to solve the most difficult problem. A government officer said, “We want people to think big: what does the world need and how can we achieve that? We are looking for the next penicillin(青霉素), airplane or World Wide Web. Something that is going to really change what we do and how we live our lives—sending us ahead in the global race. ”According to Mr Cameron, it is important to “encourage new ideas” and “attract back the best and the brightest” to Britain.1. The British government promises £1,000,000 to any person who .A. can solve the biggest challenge facing the worldB. can find how the next penicillin works on illnessesC. can think of the most difficult problem in the worldD. can help the Prime Minister run his government better2. The Longitude Prize is mentioned mainly to .A. explain why the government set up the prize in 1714B. show John Harrison was a great success as an inventorC. show that the government is very grateful to John HarrisonD. explain what gave Mr Cameron the idea of starting the competition3. We can infer(推断) from Paragraphs 4 and 5 that .A. ships no longer get lost at sea with Harrison’s inventionB. clocks on ships kept good time before Harrison’s inventionC. sailors found it hard to work out their location north and southD. the sailing industry was very important in Britain around the 1700s4. Which of the following is true according to the text?A. John Harrison was sure that he would win the prize.B. The million pound prize will go to a British scientist.C. The British government pays special attention to the nation’s creativity.D. A replacement for oil is considered as the toughest problem by the scientists.
