Question: Summarize the points made in the lecture, being sure to explain how they challenge the specific point made in the reading passage.
The passage and the lecture hold quite opposite views towards the burning mirror in ancient Greece. The former claims that it is unpractical while the later lays great confidence on it. Here are their reasons.
First, the passge&&maintains that the Greeks were unable to produce the advanced technology such as the giant mirror and the large sheet of copper which were prerequisite to making the burning mirror. However, the lecturer argues that there is no need to produce such things because the Greeks could simply employ some polished paper to form a mirror or assemble some mirror pieces.
Second, the passage points out that taking long time to set the ships on fire&&would make the burning mirror ineffective with&&an experiment as the evidence. On the contrary, the lecturer retorts this point by demonstrating an experiement which uses other water-proof material like the pitch to get , which proves that the fire can be set within seconds and can spread even the ship is moving.
Third, the writer maintains that the burning mirror is not a more advanced weapon than the flaming arrows, so there is no use for the Greek to build it. Nevertheless, the professor contends that comparing with the traditional flaming arrows, which required the soilders to observe the target and was dangerous for them at times, burning mirror, which allowed soilders to stand at distance&&to watch the other ships burning, would be much more advantaged and appreciated. So building the burning mirror as a weapon is of great significance.
Do you agree or disagree with the following statement?
It is more enjoyable to have a job where you work only three days a week for long hours than to have a job where you work five days a week for shorter hours.
Use specific reasons and examples to support your answer.
Nowadays, with the rapid development of economy, people are becoming increasingly richer than before. More and more attention has been attached to the life quality instead of the previous food issues. Therefore, the question whether working more hours for three days or shorter hours for five days rises up among the various life quality improvement questions. From my point of view, working more hours would be more preferable.
First of all, less workdays in a week contributes to a healthier body. As we all know, working atmosphere are getting intense recently owing to the occassionally occurring economic crisis which brings out increasing unemployment.&&Therefore, it is a phenomenon that employees are making effort they can to their work so as to assure their economic source. They are attached with great burden, which makes them unhealthy both physically and psychologically. Thus, allowing them to work&&less days in a week could allow them to have more time to relax. For exmple, they can spend time doing sports, reading books, or even travlling to some naturally beautiful places.
Second, less workdays could help to build a better family relationship. At present, though people are working five days a week, they still work more than 8 hours a day. Working extra hours is quite common. So they are left less time to spend with their families. Working long hours for three days offer them two more days available to be with their children or parents, which will definitly do good to intensify their family bond since they have time to do many things together to have more shared memeories and&&get to know each other better.
Finally, less workdays could motivate people have much higher working efficiency as well. In a week, people have to do the work within three days that are supposed to be finished for five days, which means that they must make every effort to speed up working so as to complete their workload. Consequently, the working efficienty will be improved unconsciously and subconsciourly, which could benefit the companies in return.
In conclusion, working less days in a week have various kinds of advantages for themselves, families as well as their company.
