Ambition is a strong desire to propel one to final success in career or other meaningful endeavors.Just like Epstein has artistically put it,“And as we decide and choose, so are our lives formed”,ambition renders motivational support for an individual and leads him or her to the real meaning of life. Therefore, I cannot agree more with him in regard to what ambition is and how it functions in one’s life.
Like the pole star, ambition remains steady and ever bright over one’s life horizon. There is only one secret for success, that is, to go in the direction your goal calls you towards the destination. It is ambition that serves as the guiding principle for a life experience. Without ambition to strive for, we would be justified to remain idle all year round as long as we are fed and keep alive. For instance,a student who dreams of being a political leader appears active in students’ union and extracurricular activities. He works hard, though no one asks him to, at sociology, psychology, law and so on, those sciences highly expected of a politician. It is his ambition that drives him to study hard and take the most advantage of his time at school. So by exercising his ambition at school, he is paving his way for the future. In contrast, poor-performance students are often those without a clear-cut vision for their future. That is why helping students with goal setting are supposed to be a task for all educational practitioners.
As a conclusion, ambition more often than not acts as strong motivation and orientation for a person’s ultimate dream. With it or without it, our life will be formed accordingly. So for a more fruitful end of our life in this world, we all should think and rethink about our ambition.
It may seem an exaggeration to say that ambition is the linchpin of society, holding many of its disparate elements together, but it is not an exaggeration by much. Remove ambition and the essential elements of society seem to fly apart.Ambition, as opposed to fantasizing about desires, implies work and discipline to achieve goals, personal and social, of a kind society cannot survive without. Ambition is intimately connected with family, for men and women not only work partl husbands and wives are often ambitious for each other, but harbor some of their most ardent ambitions for their children.Yet to have a family nowadays-- with birth control readily available, and inflation a good economic argument against having children is nearly an expression of ambition in itself. Finally, though ambition was once the domain chiefly of monarchs and aristocrats, it has, in more recent times, increasingly become the domain of the middle classes. Ambition and futurity a sense of building for tomorrow-- ar‘e inextricable. Working, saving, planning--these, the daily aspects of ambition .... have always been the distinguishing marks of a rising middle class. The attack against ambition is not incidentally an attack on the middle class and what it stands for. Like it or not, the middle class has done much of society‘s work in A and it, the middle class, has from the beginning run on ambition.
It is not difficult to imagine a world shorn of ambition. It would probably be a kinder world: without demands, without abrasions, without disappointments. People would have time for reflection. Such work as they did would not be for themselves but for the collectivity. Competition would never enter in. Conflict would be eliminated, tension become a thing of the past. The stress of creation would be at an end. Art would no longer be troubling, but purely celebratory in its functions. The family would become superfluous as a social unit, with all its former power for bringing about neurosis drained away.Longevity would be increased, for fewer people would die of heart attack or stroke caused by tumultuous endeavor. Anxiety would be extinct. Time would stretch on and on, with ambition long departed from the human heart.
Ah, how unrelievedly boring life would be!

Joseph Epstein, a famous American writer, once said, “ We decide what is important and what is trivial in life. We decide (so) that what makes us significant is either what we do or what we refuse to do. But no matter how indifferent the universe may be to our choices and decisions, these choices and decisions are ours to make. We decide. We choose. And as we decide and choose, so are our lives formed. In the end, forming our own destiny is what ambition is about. ” He gives due weight to the role of ambition in our life, but he ignores the fact that ambition alone cannot form or change a person's destiny. To fulfill ambition and “make us significant" , we also need to be hardworking, persistent, and courageous.
First of all, if you have known clearly what you want your life to be, it is hard work that carries you there. Take myself for example. I was born and grew up in a mountain village where many parents were illiterate and few children could go to first-class high schools, let alone enter college. Dissatisfied with living a farmer's life,I always dreamed of going to university and seeing the outside world. During the 12 years of schooling before college, I spent most of my time learning and worked harder than any classmate. Now, when I enjoy the fruits of my labor, I believe more firmly that “hard work” makes perfect.
Besides hard work,it takes persistence to travel on the path to your dream place. Numerous stories of success tell us that there is no royal road to great accomplishment. Thomas Edison experimented and failed hundreds of times before inventing the light bulb. Abraham Lincoln lost dozens of political elections before becoming president of the US. Whatever your ambition is, the way to achieve it is not always even. To get where you want, you sometimes have to be able to face setbacks, overcome obstacles, and above all never give up.
In many other cases, it takes courage to do what you aspire to. Darwin would not have publicized his The Evolution of Species if he had been afraid to fight against his times. Amelia Earhart would not have become a pilot and
realized her ambition to fly across the Atlantic Ocean if she had lacked the courage to defy social conventions. As these examples have illustrated, if
you have a strong faint in what you choose to do and in what you want to a-chieve,you must be brave enough to stick to it despite sneers, oppositions, and social pressure.
I agree with Joseph Epstein that we can shape our own destiny, but as the above has shown, I am not convinced that ambition alone can make it happen.
To sum our dreams into reality,we need to work hard, persevere and be brave.
Is ambition a positive or negative characteristic? Is it necessary for success? Give reasons for your answer and include any relevant examples from your knowledge or experience.
Ambition can drive one to success or harm one's happiness. The tragedy is that so many people have so many ambitions and yet so few have sufficient ability to deliver distinction. A strong desire to rise in the world would be a good trait if it is built on one's great tale otherwise, such burning zeal could become a dangerous thing.
To achieve greatness, fame, power or wealth, it is necessary to have ambitious life-goals that match one's ability. Having something at heart that one is good at and loves to do is the path to success. So. it may be argued that right ambitions are positive as being that kind of stuff which dreams are made of, and nothing can stop one with a strong desire from reaching the dreamed objective. It is hard to deny that ambition is the parent of all enterprise and the cause of all improvement. Such passion is so powerful that, in many cases, success seems almost inevitable. Ambition along with ability matters to success, on the assumption that without ambition one starts nothing, and without ability one finishes nothing.
On the negative side, being over-ambitious for success without being reasonably realistic at the same time is risky, even tragic. Ambition is not only what one wishes to do but also what one can do. With too little capabilities and resources, too many great ambitions would remain the shadow of dreams only. It had better be realized that not everyone can do everything. Unfortunately, some people are endowed with great ambition but little ability for that purpose. More often than not, grand ambitions with the wrong mental attitude stand in the way of small but meaningful accomplishments, and as well become a constant source of disappointment in life.
Ambition has its positive and negative side, depending on the size of one's dream and one's ability to succeed. Whereas a right ambition leads one to achievement, a blind one is like an expedition in the dark, going nowhere. To save or to destroy--that is the question about ambition.

You can find them running through grassland, with dirt on their faces and small bags on their backs. You can also find them playing in small rivers or climbing up trees. In Northern European countries, nature nursery schools are growing in popularity (becoming popular) because research shows that these “nature” children are better in many ways than the children in normal nursery schools.&&& Although there are different themes in different schools, nature nursery schools are most often built in a forest. A forest gives the perfect chance for a child to develop a healthy body.& The forest also offers many learning chances. Children can run around as much as they want and shout as loudly as they can .Children can use their bodies to the full, climbing, swinging, carrying and jumping. What’s more, the forest is filled with playthings: a stick can be a horse to ride or be used to direct traffic. Imagination can run wild through the trees. For these children, the world is full of life: rabbits and monkeys, wild flowers and green plants. What better way could there be to learn about animals, plants and the changing of the seasons? They buy environmentally-friendly products, and work with the idea of environmental sustainability(可持续性), such as energy-saving. In giving children a chance to develop a meaningful, friendly and responsible relationship with the natural world, it must be a regular daily practice for them to touch the earth, to hear birdsong, to collect berries and mushrooms and get to know animals and plants. C& Spring will soon be upon us and a new term is here.& All over the world spring is the season of new life: flowers bloom, baby animals are born, and the weather becomes warmer.During this time of year, people usually walk around with a spring in their steps and a feeling of fresh beginnings. However, for a fresh beginning it takes more than the bright colors and fresh air of spring. We need to look at ourselves, set new goals, and decide how to improve ourselves.&&& In England people usually do this on the first day of the year. We look at the past year and think about what we' d like to change or improve in our lives, and we call this a New Year' s resolution(决心).These can be anything from improving one' s health through exercise or cutting out bad habits, to studying harder for better grades or trying to find a good work or life balance.&&& Luckily, we don' t have to wait for the beginning of a new year to try and become better people. We can do this whenever we like. The milestone of a new term is just a good place to start.&&& Sometimes it' s difficult to take the first step in achieving newly set goals, but an old saying is "to begin is to be half-way there." I agree with this because taking on a new task or changing habits can seem daunting at first, but once we begin, they get easier. For example, spending less time on QQ or playing video games and more time studying or communicating face-to-face can be difficult habits to change at first. But once we settle into the new routine and start to see the results,& it' s difficult not to wonder why we didn’t do it sooner.&& The trick with deciding on a resolution for a new term is not to set unrealistic targets. If we do this, it's easy to lose motivation because the end goal seems so far away. Try to make many small goals you want to reach on the way to your ultimate(最终的)goal. This way, you can see your progress easily.38. In Paragraph One, the writer wants to tell us that spring is a time _________.&& &A. to take a walk around outdoors&& &&&& B. to enjoy fresh air and bright colors&& &C. to set goals for a fresh beginning&& &&&& D. for animals to have babies 39. A person who believes in himself will keep trying to reach his goal no matter how many times he fails. In my opinion, the quality of determination to succeed is an important one to have. Therefore, I believe that we should never give up.&& One reason is that if we give up too easily, we will rarely achieve anything. It is not unusual for us to fail in our first attempt(尝试) at something new, so we should not feel disappointed (失望)and should try again. Besides(此外,而且), if we always give up when we fail, we will not be able to develop new skills and grow.&& Another reason we should never give up is that we can learn from our mistakes so that we can not make the same ones. If we do not try again, the lesson (教训)that we have learned is wasted.& Finally, we should never give up because as we work to reach our goals, we develop confidence, and this confidence can help us succeed in other areas of our lives. If we never challenge (挑战)ourselves, we will begin to doubt our abilities.& In short, it is important that we do not give up when working for our goals. Whether we succeed in the end or not, we will learn something, and what we learn will help us to become better and more confident. Furthermore, if we give up, we have no chance of achieving our goals any more , but if we keep making great efforts, there is always a chance that we will succeed one day.Topic: Never Give Up
