Jo:& You&re listening to BBC Learning English and this is Ask About Britain
where we answer your questions about British life and culture. I&m Jo
and with me today is Jean.

Jo:& Ok, let&s look at your first question Tyler. What kind of programme is
Britain&s Got Talent? Well, we should perhaps tell everyone that Britain&s
Got Talent is one of the most popular shows in the UK when it&s on each
Jean:& 是的，这是一档一年一度的电视选秀节目，也是英国最有人气的电视节目。让我们
先来听一下英国BBC第四电台在today 节目中对这档电视节目的描述。
It&s the live final of Britain&s Got Talent tonight and it&s reckoned that more than 15
million people will watch it here, millions of course more on the internet. Well it
used to be that entertainers would spend their whole career working towards
getting on television on a Saturday night. Now though, talent shows like Pop Idol,
The X Factor and Britain&s Got Talent mean ordinary people can use it as their
launch pad for fame.
Jean:& 好，让我们先来逐一解释一下有关这档电视节目的情况和信息。&
Jo:& There is a live final and it&s reckoned that 15 million people will watch it
in the UK.
Jean:& 这档节目有一个决赛 a final, 而且决赛还是实况转播 live. 而这场决赛也不一般，
据说每年观看现场决赛的英国电视观众一共有一千五百万人。 To reckon 就是去认
为、相信的意思。&
Jo:& So it&s thought that 15 million people will watch the live final and
millions more on the internet. The presenter said it used to be that
entertainers would spend their whole career working towards getting on
television on a Saturday night.
Jean:& It used to be它曾经是各位参赛的演艺者们 entertainers 倾尽他们的整个演艺事业。&
&Jo:& They&d spend their whole career working towards.
Jean:& To work towards something 去向某事全力努力。就是为了能在周六的电视上出
现 to get on television. 之所以特别是要在周六晚上的电视节目中出现，是因为周
六晚间是看电视人数最多的黄金时段。
Jo:& The presenter says that now though, talent shows like Pop Idol, The X
Factor and Britain&s Got Talent&
Jean:& Ah ha 说明这是一档竞争激烈的选秀节目。在英国，电视选秀节目是层出不穷的，
比如 Pop Idol 《流行偶像》就是歌唱选秀节目， The X Factor 也很类似。在英语
里，如果某人身上具有 The X Factor 这样所谓的未知元素就是说他很有明星潜
质，有明星气。还有另一档的选秀节目就是 Britain&s Got Talent.
Jo:& Britain&s Got Talent is slightly different from Pop Idol and The X Factor,
as they&re not just looking for singers. You can go on there if you have
any talent.
Jean:& 是的，所以来参赛的有歌手、喜剧表演家、舞蹈演员、杂技演员、口技表演者等等
，总之，只要你觉得自己有一技之长，都可以来比赛。八仙过海，各显神通。&&
Jo:& So talent shows like this mean that ordinary people can use it as their
launch pad for fame, rather than as it used to be when people worked
their whole career working towards getting on TV on a Saturday night.
Jean:& Ordinary people 很多平凡的普通人都把这个节目当作进入演艺生涯的一个发射台

Jo:& On BBC Learning English Ask About Britain today we&re answering Tyler&s
question about the TV show Britain&s Got Talent. Now there has been
three series of the show so far.
Jean:& Series 系列。今年的《英国达人》冠军是一组英国的舞蹈团，不过今年节目的另一
个热点是来自苏格兰的一位歌手 Susan Boyle, 是位貌不惊人，极为普通的中年妇
女，但是她绝妙的歌喉已经展示立刻惊艳全场。去年的冠军由一位十几岁的舞蹈神
Jo:& And in the first series an opera singer called Paul Potts won.&
&Jean:& An opera singer 就是一位美声唱法的歌剧演唱家。而我们的中国听友Tyler 也想
知道英国的大众对这位保罗▪泊兹都有些什么样的看法。 Have a listen to this.
When Paul Potts won the first series of Britain&s Got Talent his life changed for
good. He went from being a shop manager to a global star selling millions of
Now he&s releasing his second album called Passione or Passion. He&s performing all
over the world.
Jo:& So when Paul Potts won the first series of Britain&s Got Talent his life
changed for good.
Jean:& For good 永远的。他的人生从此永远地改变了。保罗从一位商店售货员变成了一个
世界性的明星。 A global star.
Jo:& So he was a shop manager. Now he&s a global star selling millions of
records and he&s releasing a second album. Records.
Jean:& Records 就是唱片的意思，以前专门用来形容老式的胶片唱片，现在用它 records
来统称唱片，也包括CD 和网上下载的音乐。而保罗现在已经开始灌制他的第二张
专辑了。 So he must be popular then Jo?
Jo:& Well I think it&s fair to say he is. His first album went to number one in
Jean:& 第一张专辑就拿到英国排行榜冠军，这说明英国人对他是相当喜爱了。他的这张专
辑光在英国就售出了两百万张，而且他也在全世界不同国家都作了表演。&
&Jo:& To perform. To perform all over the world. Paul is from Wales and those
Welsh people who knew him and worked with him are very proud.
It&s amazing to see. Paul&s such a nice guy and he deserves everything he&s getting
at the moment. We&re really chuffed for him.
Jo:& So she said he was a nice guy. Guy is another word for man. She thinks
he deserves everything he is getting.
Jean:& 他现在取得的一切都是理所应当的。这位女士还用到了一个词 chuffed 就是英语口
语里开心、满意的意思。
Jo:& She says they are really chuffed for him. They are really happy for him.
Paul himself is very surprised by his success.
It&s kind of crazy. I never expected to be doing anything, you know, even in this
&Jean:& 保罗自己也说一切都太不可思议了 it&s crazy. 他原来从来也没想到他真的会取
得什么成就，即使在他自己的国家 - 英国。
Jo:& He never expected all this success. Anyway we hope that&s answered

But what kind of a show is it?
Jean Dong and Jo Hunter talk about the show's popularity and explain what happens in it.
There have been three series of Britain's Got Talent so far but the winner of the first series was a classical singer called Paul Potts.
He is now an international star, performing concerts all over the world, but what do British people think of him?
