We all know about bananas. They are rich in vitamins A, B6 and C and in potassium(钾), and humans eat large numbers of them. But what about the banana leaf itself?
The banana leaf may have been used earlier as the modern paper plate. Eating food served on a banana leaf is healthier than eating food off plastic, steel or other plates. Since the leaf can hold a large amount of food, it requires fewer rounds of serving and thus it is easy when you are serving parties of 1000 people. When the meal is finished, the leaf can be composted(制成堆肥).

they add a special flavour(气味) to the food.
In Sri Lanka, when fruits are being transported by lorry, banana leaves serve as packing materials to prevent them from getting squashed(挤压变形). In this way, they are far more environmentally-friendly than plastic wrapping materials. Another advantage is that when banana leaves are used, they help to keep the freshness of the fruits.
On rainy days, villagers in many parts of the world hold banana leaves over their heads to keep them from getting wet! Banana leaves are sometimes used as wedding decorations, where they are thought to bring good luck and wealth to the couple getting married. In places such as Haiti, when the leaves are dried, they are used to make attractive food baskets and salad bowls.
The many uses of banana leaves make them an important part of traditional life in countries such as Sri Lanka and they are a perfect example of the human ability to find a purpose for even the most ordinary items. The banana and its leaf together form one of nature's truly useful creations.

Blue Balliett's mysteries are mainly about stolen items, kidnappings(诱拐) and kid crime-solvers. Her new book, Hold Fast, is no exception. When 11-year-old Early Pearl's father suddenly disappears, she and her family end up living in a homeless shelter. As the story develops, Early learns her father's disappearance is tied to the theft of valuable jewels. The following is the interview of TFK with Balliett.
BALLIETT: Years ago I was reading the newspapers about more and more families in the United States who were losing their homes. However, I wasn't hearing much about the kids. I got really interested in the fact that these kids were too invisible(无形的). Therefore, once I met some of the kids in Chicago, I was even more determined because they were just like kids I met everywhere else. They were talking about their lives and I thought, no one was listening to these kids. I wanted to change that. I wanted to give kids who were in the complicated situation of losing a home a chance to be the kids who could shine in this book.
TFK: To which character from Hold Fast are you most similar?
BALLIETT: I would have to say I would be most like Early although I think Early is much cooler than I was when I was little. I'm pretty determined when I want to get something done, and Early is a determined character, too.
TFK: Why do you set most of your books in Chicago?
BALLIETT: I love Chicago. It's a city where you can find out so many puzzles and stories. It has all kinds of people and real-life mysteries to be worked on. All the factual-sounding things in my books are real. I learn a lot when I write a book.
TFK: Do you enjoy writing books for kids?
BALLIETT: I love writing these books. It's much fun to write these books and send these ideas out into the world. It's an adventure for me.

"Quite" good
Using "quite" to mean "very" happens a lot in the US. But if you are invited to a dinner party in a British household, don't describe the meal as "quite good" if you want to express high praise. To Britons' ears, "quite" detracts from the "good": The meal was passable but could have been better.
Money Talk
Americans can talk about money subjects for hours without feeling uncomfortable. For Britons, says Margolis, "Talking about how much we make is unthinkable—only less so than discussing our feelings."
Over-politeness
In the US, it is not unusual to be greeted by a perfect stranger as "honey" or "sweetie". But Margolis says Britons find put-on friendliness, especially in stores, deeply irritating(使人生气的). "It's not that I want shop assistants to be actively rude. But neither do I want to expend energy responding to someone who's been paid to ask, 'How are you today?'" says Margolis.
