Play is the basic business of childhood, and in recent
years research has shown the great importance of play in the development of a
human being. From earliest infancy（婴儿）, every child needs opportunity and right materials for play, and
the main tools of play are toys. The main function of toys is to suggest,
encourage and play. To succeed in this, they must be good toys, which children
will play with often, and will come back again and again. Therefore, it is
important to choose suitable toys for different stages of a child’s development.
In recent years, research on baby
development has shown that the standard a child is likely to reach, within the
range of his inherited（遗传的）abilities, is largely determined in the first three years of his
life. So a baby’s ability to benefit from the right play materials should not
be underestimated. A baby who is encouraged, talked to and shown things and
played with, has the best chance of growing up successfully.
In the next stage, from three to five years
old, curiosity knows no bounds. Every type of suitable toys should be made
available to the child, for trying out, experimenting and learning, for
discovering his own particular ability: Bricks and jigsaws（七巧板）a painting,
scribbling（涂鸦）
toys for imaginative and pretending play—the first social games for learning to
play and get on with others.
But at the third stage of play
development—from five to seven or eight years old— the child is at school. But
for a few more years play is still the best way of learning, at home or at
school．It is easier to
see which type of toys the child most enjoys.
Until the age of seven or eight, play and
work mean much the same to a child．But once reading has been mastered, then books become the main
source of learning. Toys are still interesting and valuable, which lead up to
new hobbies, but their significance has changed to a child of nine or ten years
old, toys and games mean, as to adults, relaxation and fun.

　　　　过去进行时
　　　　They were expecting a valuable parcel of diamonds from South Africa.
　　　　　　The plane was late and detectives were waiting at the airport all morning.
　　　　　　When the plane arrived, some of the detectives were waiting inside the main building while others were waiting on the airfield.
　　　　　　While two detectives were keeping guard at the door, two others opened the parcel.
　　　　　　（1）过去进行时态的概念和用法
　　　　　　过去进行时态表示过去某时正在进行的状态或动作。过去进行时的常用的时间状语有阿at that moment, this morning, all day yesterday, from nine to ten last evening等。看课文中的句子，标志过去进行时的时间状语有： all morning， while， when。
　　　　　　(2) 过去进行时可以表示在过去某个时间点发生的事情。
　　　　　　When the plane arrived, some of the detectives were waiting inside the main building while others were waiting on the airfield.
　　　　　　当飞机到达时，一些侦探等候在主楼内，另一些侦探则守候在停机坪上。
　　　　　　（3） 不是所有的动词都能够用过去进行时态的。如 agree, be, believe, belong, forget, hate, hear, know等。
　　　　　　例如：
　　　　　　误：I was knowing the answer.
　　　　　　正：I knew the answer. 我知道答案。
　　　　下面归纳一下通常不能用于过去进行时的动词：agree, be, believe, belong, care, forget, hate, have(拥有), hear, know, like, love, mean, mind, notice, own, remember, seem, suppose, understand, want, wish等。
　　　　例如：
　　　　　　　　误：I was knowing the answer.
　　　　　　　　正：I knew the answer. 我知道答案。
　　　　　　　　误：I wasn't understanding him.
　　　　　　　　正：I didn't understand him. 我不明白他的意思。
　　　　　　（4）、典型例题
　　　　　　1) Mary ___ a dress when she cut her finger.

　　　　　　　 答案C. 割伤手指是已发生的事情，应用过去时。同　时，when表时间的同时性，&玛丽在做衣服时&提供事情发生的背景，因此用过去进行时。

　　　　　　　 答案B.句中的as = when, while，意为&当&&之时&。描述一件事发生的背景时，用过去进行；一个长动作发生的时候，另一个短动作发生。句意为 &在她看报纸时，奶奶睡着了。&句中的 fell (fall的过去时)，是系动词，后跟形容词，如：fall sick。
