he fights his biggest battle

BRIAN NOBLE admits protecting Wigan Warriors' engage Super League
status has been one of the hardest challenges of his career.
Thankfully for the Wigan faithful, former Bradford policeman Noble has
arrested their decline.
And they kick-off at Harlequins tonight knowing they'll stay in the top

For all Noble's trials in the last five months, Mike Gregory would love
to have faced the same problems.
In 2003 he was the first Wiganer for nearly two decades to coach his
home town club.
But 12 months later he was diagnosed with Lyme Disease Borreliosis - a
tick-borne disease that blocks signals from the brain getting to
muscles, causing weight-loss and speech defects.
If caught early the infection can be cured. However, in Gregory's case
specialists believe the trigger might have happened three years before
he sought treatment.
Wigan eventually put him on gardening leave and did not renew his
contract when it expired in 2005. He took them to an industrial
tribunal and won £17,500.
Gregory, 41, continues to battle the disease and is just recovering
from septicaemia that has affected his voice and severely weakened his
But he and wife Erica have not given up hope he will one day make a
full recovery.
Treatment is painful and costly but the Rugby League world is coming
together later this month to raise funds for the Mike Gregory Trust
Indeed, the cream of Great Britain past will be on duty on September 24
to take on Wigan St Pats amateur club where Gregory began his career.
Organiser Joe Lydon already has 34 players wanting to turn out,
including Noble, Andy Gregory, Denis Betts, Phil Clarke, Gary Connolly,
Paul Cullen, Henry Paul, Sean Long and Martin Gleeson.
&It shows the depth of feeling in the game for Mike. Hopefully, we can
put a smile back on his face,& said Lydon. Gregory says he has been
'overwhelmed' by the response of the game. &Money raised from the day
will go towards my continuing treatment.
&Ultimately, I would like to do an awareness campaign about the illness
and help the charities that have supported me.
&Just recently there was an article about Lyme disease Borreliosis and
the fact if untreated it can cause cardiac, joint and neurological
conditions.
&My wife and I want to do our bit to prevent other families from going
through the torment.&
Indeed, the couple have written a book due for release later this month
called 'Biting Back -the Mike Gregory story'.
Wife Erica adds: &Mike has recently been for stem cell therapy in an
attempt to help the body repair the damage.
&If I had a tardis I would whisk Mike off to America. The clinic there
has had a 70 per cent success rate in helping people just like Mike
achieve better health.
&Every game on Sky he will watch. I know he wishes Brian Noble all the
best but equally his heart is still at Warrington.&
The benefit game takes place at Clarington Park, 1.30pm kick-off.
