(BEIJING,August 24) -- France crushed Iceland 28-23 to win their first Olympic gold medal in Men's Handball at the National Indoor Stadium on Sunday,August 24.The French closed down Iceland's trademark shooting, and whenever Iceland found a gap they were denied by goalkeeper Thierry Omeyer, who saved an incredible 49 percent of all shots and made the Olympic Games All Star Team.By comparison,Iceland goalkeeper Bjorgvin Pall Gustavsson saved just 36 percent, and his job was made harder by Iceland's suffering defense.Left-back Nikola Karabatic fired one sharp shot after another, either straight over or straight through Iceland's defense, netting eight goals for France from nine attempts.Center-back Bertrand Gille (FRA) effortlessly burst through Iceland's defense, scoring four out of five shots from the 6m line. The match remained close for only 13 minutes, when France netted five goals in a row to take a 9-4 lead, and from then on France were too strong for the Icelandic men.France steadily increased their lead throughout the second half as Iceland started missing passes, letting France get away with easy steals.Iceland did have the most fast breaks in the game, but only managed to score from five of 11.Iceland's attack suffered most from the lack of goals from leading scorer Snorri Steinn Gudjonsson (ISL),as the French blocking restricted him to two goals. The French also succeeded in neutralizing pivot Robert Gunnarsson (ISL),who only got in two shot attempts in the entire game.A rare success for the Icelandic team was right-back Olafur Stefansson (ISL),who put five shots past goalkeeper Omeyer.France started celebrating when they went nine goals ahead with six minutes left, and with less than a minute remaining Iceland settled for an Olympic silver medal.(BEIJING,August 24) -- Hungary won a third consecutive Olympic gold medal to take their tally to nine Games titles by beating the US 14-10 in the Men's Water Polo final at the Yingdong Natatorium on Sunday,August 24.Classification 9th-10th Italy 10 vs Germany 8 Italy and Germany played an uninspired ninth-place match.Italian Alessandro Calcaterra scored five goals for the day, finishing as the tournament's top shooter with 27 goals.Calcaterra contributed more than a quarter of the Italian goals.Classification 7th-8th Greece 9 vs Australia 8 Greece, needing a top-three finish to gain entry to the 2009 Rome FINA World Championships, had to settle for seventh place with an upset victory over the Australians who lost three games - all by one goal.Georgios Ntoskas,Greece's highest scorer with 20 goals, was kept scoreless with his two penalty attempts blocked by Australian goalkeeper James Stanton.Classification 5th-6th Spain 11 vs Croatia 9 Spain blew away world champions Croatia to lead 11-6 in the final quarter before allowing Croatia to finish with a flourish.Croatia had led 2-0 at the quarter but it was level 5-5 by half-time with Spain holding an 8-6 lead at the final break.Bronze medal match Serbia 6 vs Montenegro 4 Serbia, playing without the injured scoring machine Aleksandar Sapic and goalkeeper Denis Sefik, controlled the match from the start and romped to 6-1 midway through the third period. The Serbian scoring stopped as Montenegro clawed their way back into the game but could not produce enough to win and Serbia won the bronze medal.Gold medal match Hungary 14 vs US 10 Hungary beat off a stern challenge from the US team to win their ninth title with six players experiencing Olympic victory for the third time. The opening quarter threw up 10 goals and by half-time Hungary led 9-8.The margin moved to two at the final break and then 14-9 in the final period before US fired in their 10th goal too late to realize their Olympic dreams.(BEIJING,August 17) -- The world champion crew from Canada is now Olympic champion after winning the Men's Eight with a time of 5:23.89,staying in front of second-place Great Britain from start to finish. The British finished with a time of 5:25.11,just ahead of third-place United States, which finished in 5:25.34.The Canadians broke a 35-year-old trend that has seen no reigning world champion in the Men's Eight collect Olympic gold.Their commanding seven second heat win over Poland on Monday,August 11,made them pre-race favorites to end the trend."That was one of the final things we talked about last night at our meeting," said Canadian rower Rutledge when asked about the 35-year-old Olympic drought."We wanted to put two things to rest -- first was our performance in Athens, and second we wanted to be the first crew to win Olympic Gold whilst being world champions." The crew from Great Britain was in second place throughout the race. The US crew passed the Netherlands at the 1500m mark to grab bronze.Men's Eight, final standings:1.Canada -- 5:23.89 Kevin Light,Ben Rutledge,Andrew Byrnes,Jake Wetzel,Malcolm Howard,Dominic Seiterle,Adam Kreek,Kyle Hamilton,Brian Price 2.Great Britain --5:25.11 Alex Partridge,Tom Stallard,Tom Lucy,Richard Egington,Josh West,Alastair Heathcote,Matt Langridge,Colin Smith 3.United States -- 5:25.34 Beau Hoopman,Matt Schnobrich,Micah Boyd,Wyatt Allen,Daniel Walsh,Steven Coppola,Josh Inman,Bryan Volpenhein,Marcus Mc Elhenney 4.Netherlands -- 5:29.26 Meindert Klem,Rogier Blink,Olivier Siegelaar,Jozef Klaassen,David Kuiper,Mitchel Steenman,Olaf van Andel,Diederik Simon,Peter Wiersum 5.Poland-- 5:31.42 Sebastian Kosiorek,Michal Stawowski,Patryk Brzezinski,Slawomir Kruszkowski,Wojciech Gutorski,Marcin Brzezinski,Rafal Hejmej,Mikolaj Burda,Daniel Trojanowski 6.Australia -- 5:35.10 David Dennis,Samuel Loch,James Chapman,Tom Laurich,Jeremy Stevenson,James Tomkins,Sam Conrad,Stephen Stewart,Marty RabjohnsWomen's Hockey Day 6 Preview:Heavyweights clash in the semi-finalsUpdated: 01:13:19 (BEIJING,August 19) -- China takes on defending gold medalists Germany in the first semifinal of the evening before the number one and two ranked teams in the competition, the Netherlands and Argentina, meet,at the Olympic Green Hockey Stadium on Wednesday,August 20.Germany and China will compete with each other in the first semifinal. Both teams have suffered one loss en route to the semifinals and now have everything to play for in this match.Fu Baorong and Tang Chunling of China and Fanny Rinne and Natascha Keller of Germany will be looking to play key roles for their teams.China will need to win this match for their best finish-ever in the Olympics while Germany is hoping to defend its title. The last time the teams met was in the 2008 Champions Trophy where Germany won 2-0.The Netherlands will face Argentina in the second semifinal. Both teams are undefeated in this competition -- the Netherlands gained the maximum 15 points in the preliminary rounds while Argentina collected 11 points after draws with the United States and Great Britain. The Netherlands is ranked No.1 in this competition while Argentina, the 2008 Champions Trophy champions,is No.2.The Dutch have a lethal penalty corner weapon in Maartje Paumen, the leading goal scorer in the competition with eight while Argentina's playmaker Luciana Aymar has found form and will be a force to be reckoned with. The last time the teams met was in the 2008 Champions Trophy when Argentina won 2-0.The first match of the day will kick off between the Republic of Korea (ROK) and Japan as the classification 9-10.The worst finish the ROK has had in the Olympics was in Sydney where it finished ninth while Japan,in its first Olympics appearance in Athens, finished eighth. The match is a repeat of the 2004 Athens Games 7-8 Classification game in which the ROK won 3-1.Both teams will do their best to win this match to salvage some pride after unimpressive performances in the preliminary rounds. In the matches of classification 7-8,Spain will meet the United States. The US team has produced some good results in pool B,but its defeat by Germany meant it could only finish fourth in the pool.Spain was unlucky to be placed in a tough pool with Australia,China and the Netherlands, but a fourth place finish in the pool is a good result for the team. Both teams have shown the potential of matching the top teams in the competition, but a lack of experience prevented them from achieving a higher finish.

奥运英语新闻:伦敦奥运会运动员药物测试
http://www.
Drug testing for the 2012 London Olympic Games started on Monday with estimates that over half of all the athletes, and every medal winner, will be tested. A team of 150 scientists will take more than 6,000 samples between now and the end of the Paralympic Games in September in an effort to ensure the Games are not tainted by cheats. Experts say the drug testers will be using much faster, more extensive and more precise procedures than before.
Kerry O&Callaghan, Head of Global Brand Communications at Glaxosmithkline, said, &Testing is happening throughout the whole period and we are going to be testing 6000 athletes across the Olympic and Paralympic Games, more than at any other games. And that means that over half the athletes will be tested, and anyone who stands on a podium. And our role is to provide the ability and the mass production to get such a high level of testing done in such a short length of time - but it has to be done right, and that&s where our expertise and scientific credibility really comes to the fore. All of the testing that we take during the Games will actually be kept for eight years so if there is any test or chemical that is found in the future that wasn&t known at the moment then those athletes can be brought back, called to attention, later on.&
