read的基本意思是“读”“阅”,指“阅读”的能力或“阅读”的动作。含有用阅读的方法理解内容的意味。引申可指“读懂”“解释”“理解”“标明”。
read既可用作不及物动词,也可用作及物动词。用作及物动词时,可接名词、代词、带疑问词的动词不定式、that从句或疑问词从句作宾语,也可接双宾语,其间接宾语可以转化为介词to或for的宾语,还可接以as短语充当补足语的复合宾语。read有时还可用作系动词,接名词作表语。
read作“读,默读,诵读”和“借助阅读发现某人〔事〕的情况”时不用于被动结构。接含as短语的复合结构时多用于被动结构。
read用作不及物动词时,强调行为而不强调对象,后面常接副词或介词来表示阅读的方式,其主动形式可以表示被动意义。
take (it) as read that...的意思是“认为”。
read用于现在完成进行时可不带宾语,但用于现在完成时其后必须接宾语。
read作“读数”解时的词类语法学家有不同见解,如:The thermometre reads 35 degrees.温度计的读数是35度。这一句中的read《英语语法大全》(张道真,P1456节)认为read是系动词; 《朗文当代高级英语辞典》(商务版,P1248)中认为read是及物动词; 《牛津高阶英汉双解词典第四版》(商务版,P1237)认为read是不及物动词。
read可用作名词,意思是“阅读”“使感兴趣的书”。例如:Can I have a read of that timetable?我可以看一下那张时间表吗?The book is a very good read.这本书非常好。
read还可用作形容词,意思是“博学的”“通晓…的”。例如:He is widely read in the classics.他精通古典文学。

read的意思是“读”; read of的意思是“读到”; read about的意思是“读到…的细节”。read的宾语是book, newspaper, poem等报刊、杂志或文章、诗集等,而read of和read about的宾语则是报纸杂志或文章诗集等里面的内容。
read, browse, leaf, scan
这四个词都有“读”的意思。它们之间的区别是：browse指“泛读”“浏览”,其目的在于挑选,有时也引申为采购其他物品; leaf一般指快速翻动,其目的只看看关键性的词汇或段落,多与through连用; 而scan则指迅速阅读一篇文章以便能抓住其主要内容,其目的性很强,也比leaf和browse严肃; 而read属于普通用语,应用十分广泛,既可指“泛读”“浏览”,也可指“朗读”“默读”“精读”。例如:
