I never would have thought.
15th February 2011
Here I am in Malaysia again and I have to say I would never of
thought it would've been so soon. As the Chinese would say, I must
have some kind of kismet with this place. I know my wife has, as
this was the place were she filmed her Taiwan album video. I never
would have thought that Kuala Lumpar is such a great place to
retire for the future. I was also a little shocked this time that
the financial situations of differing people can change so much as
you move from street to street.
I really like this place, the weather here is hardly ever grey,
especially compared with the UK. The food is excellent and the
people are surprisingly friendly and accommodating. But especially
at night, you can really see some adverse poverty on these streets,
particularly where our hotel is. Despite this, KL is on the up and
I think people are very positive about the future here. A new
highspeed rail connection to Singapore via KL central is about to
be constructed by a Chinese firm. What a small world! Who would
have thought that China would have come so far in such a short
space of time? What's next? Buckingham Palace renovated in the PRC.
It really is becoming a 'flat world'.
People here are a lot more relaxed than back home (China) and I
think this is due to all the national and religious holidays they
have here, and it really is unbelievable how so many different
races interact with each other and yet still manage to hold on to
their identity. There's a lot to be learnt from Malaysia, although
a few things could always be better. I never would have thought
that being so multilingual would create so many opportunities and
so many new friends. Sometimes I weep for my fellow western
counterparts who still don't speak the local language where they
live or any other language except English.
What ever else can be said, your own stage is certainly
broadened if you can just communicate with more than just one kind
of person. You might not ever be able to totally empathize with
everyone, but you could come close to understanding what's going on
and why. Something I never would have understood when I started my
journey in East Asia, but I'm grateful that all the pieces fell
into place to allow me this adventure. Who would have thought? The
future is much brighter than I expected it would become a few years
ago and it only seems to be more promising.
Much of this is due to my wife marrying me and looking after me.
Sometimes our lines get crossed and it's often not pretty, but
above all, our ships are sailing in the right direction, together!
I also have a lot to thank my family and friends for. I haven't
always taken their advice and God knows it's been patchy sometimes,
but I hope I'll be able to give more back to those I love. Lastly,
I want to thank a friend and teacher, Mr. Wuli. I'm sure without
him both my wife and I wouldn't be as certain of today and
tomorrow. I'm grateful for his patience, understanding and
heartfelt advice. I never would have thought that we would have
been able to meet someone like him so early in our lives, but there
is no such thing as chance meetings. I never want to forget or
disbelieve this reality, however busy I become or how far I have to

I never thought I would have a life-changing experience at Wal-Mart.
&&&& Although my thoughts were only on speed, the checkout line I was standing in wasn't moving as quickly as I wanted, and I glanced toward the cashier.
&&&& There stood a man in his seventies, wearing glasses and a nice smile. I thought, well, he's an old guy!&&&& For the next few minutes I watched him. He greeted every customer before scanning the items. Sure, hi s words were the usual, “How's it going?” But he did something different―he actually listened to people. Then he would respond to what they had said and engage them in brief conversation.
&&&& I thought it was odd. I have grown accustomed to people asking me how I was doing simply out of robotic conversational habit. After a while, you don't give any thought to the question and just mumble something back. I could say, “I just found out I have six months to live,” and someone would reply, “Have a great day!”
&&&& But that wasn't the end.
&&&& He gave them the change, walked around the cou nter, and extended his right hand in an act of friendship. He looked at the customers in the eyes. “I sure want to thank you for shopping here today,” he told them. “You have a great day. Bye-bye.”
&&&& The looks on the faces of the customers were priceless. There were smiles and some sheepish grins. All had been touched by his simple gesture---and in a place they never expected. They would gather their things and walk out, smiling.
&&&& Of course, he did the same to me and I got to know his name, Marty.
&&&& Who was that guy? It was as if Sam Walton had come back from the dead and invaded this old guy’s body.
&&&& I had never walked away from that shop feeling like that.
