A Test Tube Holder is a device that as the name suggests is used to hold the test tubes in place and based on the uses and the type of test tubes there are many modifications that can be sought.

A test tube holder’s main purpose is to hold the test tube in place, but they can also be used to hold the pipettes and stirring rods in place. Depending upon the nature or property of the substance held in the test tube, the test tube holders have many accessories that have evolved over last few centuries. Specialized diversifications of fields amalgamating radiation, biology and chemistry have inspired the test tube holder designs to change in last few decades.

Properties of a Test Tube Holder is dependent upon the type of experiment it is used in in other words the property of the substance held. They are classified based on a number of criterion such as physical property, biological property, chemical nature of the reactions involved,required position of the test tube during experiment ,radiological property of the reagents , speed/ vibration involved during experiment, portable/ static nature of the experiment, bulk transport/ storage purpose,fixed/ detachable/ flexible property as required and exposure to corrosion/ autoclaving.

Racks: these are socket type test tube holders: made of wood, plastic, metal, chinaware or may be simply concrete structures beside your laboratory basin.
Slanting racks: depending on the nature of the experiment, the slant of the rack are adjusted by specialized equipments in order to carry out the storage orexperiment.
Lab- ware baskets: come with tilt top lids. Of various sizes- autoclave and corrosion resistant. Materials involve aluminium, polypropylene or polyethylene baskets.
Drying racks: chemically resistant, along with work station or fume hoods- made of poly styrene or brass: often come with wall hangers
Bins: clear acrylic shelves with white bases
Special purpose racks: can be autoclaved.
Micro pipette racks: micro used for bench top of long term storage
Centrifuge racks: special purpose racks made of metal or high strength plastic/ glass to withstand a high velocity circular motion during centrifuge methods
Brackets: easy to transport, mostly made of plastic. Used to store many tubes in upright/ inverted position during storage/ experiment/ transport
Chemistry lab beaker test tube holder: special purpose holder to carry out carry out chemical experiments involving high temperature/ pressure variation
Test tube clamps: the test tube can be held in a particular slanting position requiring microbiological culture/ biochemical experiments
Special slot test tube holders: special lab experiments like ELISA, Drug Screen etc involving colour coding, multiple test tubes of various sizes & colours are involved
Multi-level/ detachable holders: highly specific experiments need these equipments
Steralizing and maintain a test tube holder:
Sterilizing test tube holder is important to ensure that it is kept contamination free and that any experiment that is done with test tubes place in it don’t get contaminated. They are sterilised in the standard procedure as with metals they are cleaned and autoclaved while for plastic one they can be cleaned with disinfectants and sterilized using fumigants.
It is important that they be kept clean and dry to ensure a good working life.
